Well, it's like how those girls that escaped were saying, they thought that their leader was a god, and Kim was the son of god, and they thought the south was starving on the streets. If you are told these things from birth, you have no common sense to debate against it.
just like religion
Oh wow the guy trying to hide the European flag on the tractor.
http://www.vbs.tv/en-gb/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/vice-guide-to-north-korea-1-of-3
That was interesting. But I felt that the BBC's had more to offer or something. The tea girl part was really sad though.
Really interesting and sad. Some people in the country are completely delusional.
Is there any sort of underground movement in a place like North Korea, or has the government suppressed everything so much it can't be possible?
The North Korean army looks well disciplined.
That was interesting. But I felt that the BBC's had more to offer or something. The VBS guys were actually there as tourists, and were pretty much given the standard NK tour as well as pretty much being threatened every step of the way.
Is there any sort of underground movement in a place like North Korea, or has the government suppressed everything so much it can't be possible?
No underground movements. Individuals who distrust, hate, or intend to desert fromt eh country, but no networks, or organizations, or anything like that. Except there have been a few int he higher ranks. For instance, the one guy in this documentary's father who was put to death for trying a coup. It's suspected aswell that the sub that attacked the Cheonan was going rogue in an attempt to start a war. Conflicting theories propose it may have been because they thought they could win the war and take SK, some think it was because they know they'd lose and their nation would be liberated. But mostly it's all 1984 and no one can afford to make an underground rebellion.
All of this reminds me of Russia. Back in the fucking early 1900s. Also, when they visited all the little kids, that freaked me out, it seemed inhuman, like they were robots, or all perfectly selected children to show off to the news team

That was when they were best off, then and the 80s. I'd say it's closer to 40s-50s than anything.
Why are all the soldiers female apart from the higher ranks?
Why are all the soldiers female apart from the higher ranks?
They aren't. In 'communist' countries like N.K. gender equality, especially in the military, is important, so there are just as many women (if not more in the case of China) in the military as men. Women still aren't seen totally competent for actual warfare in Korean culture, though, and are usually given positions inside communities and cities as police to avoid actually being involved in anything if shit goes down. All border guards are male, and the majority of combat-based units are male. Fun fact: The USSR's most efficient units were all made of women. Fun fact 2: The Balkan states exported women as snipers in the Chechen war due to their deadly accuracy. They got the equivalent of 4000$ for shooting a Soviet/Russian soldier in the testicles, and 1000$ for a kill. Many of them became rich right quick.
wow that was sad
What a bitch. I mean sure, she's exposing their lies but she's really funking blunt. She could have at least tried to mask her remarks more.
English
I'm surprised that the U.S doesn't organize an assassination of high ranking NKorean government officials. I would make sense to invade North Korea, liberate the people there and let the south take over when everything is stable...like Afghanistan but there would actually be a valid reason behind it all. [editline]12:21PM[/editline] and I bet Osama Bin Laden could run NK better than kim jong il
North Korea is allied with China, if the U.S even thought about that China would declare war.
North Korea is allied with China, if the U.S even thought about that China would declare war.
Depends on the circumstances, really. If the North starts shit, good chance no support from china. If we start shit, chances are China will step in. China's NK's defender, and will defend their sovereignty, but they would be crazy to lose their main trading partner over a bad move by the North. Big brother little brother stuff. If the bullies are picking on China's little bro, he'll defend them, but if NK goes around picking fights, then thats his own problem.
"A ballet about the triumphant building of a hydro-electric dam" made it so much win.
2:25 Holy shit what the fuck what a bitch It's called paying your respects
I like how blunt she was. Took "balls"? To ask the questions she did. As for the situation though, scary. Hard to imagine a thriving South Korea being so close to North Korea. South Korea being among the most tech advanced in the world and North Korea in the dark. The only way things will change is if the people rebel. And they really won't since they have no idea anything is wrong. South Korea cannot afford an invasion. China doesn't want to bother.
Fuck the north korean army. Their going to be the next country we liberate! Go UN! Also, that student thinking stalin was the leader of the soviet union still made me go 0_o literally.
i want to go there
Wow, that must sucking, standing everyday for hours on end :(
I watched the vice guide ages ago, but it really is great, and probably more enjoyable than the BBC report in my opinion.
