They really need to highlight what makes them different.
quake live is quake 3
xonotic is more like quake 1/quakeworld than it is quake 3 and is also solely based around the rocket launcher and grenade launcher
warsow has some new movement stuff (double jumping up stairs for height, walljumps)
toxikk is a bad ut2k4 clone that's dead, don't know why you even included that in here

And what has Diabotical that these can't offer?

a combination of movement techniques with a built-in map editor and mod capabilities, as well as an in-game self-sustained tournament system where you can give away prizes (james worked on the same tournament system for bloodline champions)
all combined with the fact that this will probably be the most played afps besides quake live due to the marketing + support from several popular esports personalities and players.

Trust me when I say that I genuinely want to be optimistic about this title, but so many games have tried to emulate the past and failed. When a title can only describe itself as emulating the past, a lot of the time it'll flat out fail. The personality of this game derives from the art style and player models, as well as an enticing tournament system, but what else really makes it something individual - something to stand out against the past attempts to resurrect the fast-paced arena shooter? What I'm asking more specifically is why wouldn't this just continue the pattern of failure?
I think there's a lot of games that simulate the past while being something new. Team Fortress 2 is a great transcendence from Team Fortress Classic and Quake Fortress for many different reasons but mainly a great deal of individuality and originality. DOOM took from the past and the present to create a campaign worth giving a damn about. I think if people focus on the past as the supreme selling point, they end up with a lot of risks including the risk of trying to live up to a predecessor, when in reality it's probably a better idea to be entirely separate and not attempt to replace. Most of the trailer is doing the opposite - it's really trying to rub in your face that this is EXTREME like QUAKE, which is something that reminded me of Toxikk's trailer, which I admittedly laughed at in the past for trying so hard to be something I knew it wasn't going to be.
And so, while I would love for this to succeed, I must second the question:

So the failure of the others is marketing and mod support? Do you think this will keep the player count high enough to be relevant? I'm not so sure. There's a lot of people who claim to be the authority on the past and know how to bring it to the future, and while there are potential successes (Yooka-Laylee), there are also terrible failures (Mighty No. 9). Marketing provides some padding, but it can't do everything. Mod support is always lovely, though.
So the failure of the others is marketing
Marketing is the failure of pretty much every AFPS in the past several years.
the goal has been met on kickstarter!
next milestone: co-op race gamemode
