Maybe most players play as x because the default sliders are there?
I'll have you know I would play default face male shepard no matter what, I am a male, so I choose male, and I enjoy the face because it just looks right and it matches the voice.

is it so hard to understand that some people agree the industry has issues with sexism but don't think anita is a good person to use as the poster child for feminism in video games
I don't even think she sees herself as the voice of feminism in video games. Her videos, atleast the Tropes vs Women series, never mention feminism even tangentially.
You know what's easy to do? Point out an issue/problem. You know what isn't quite as easy? Give a solution.
I didn't watch this video so sorry if this dosn't apply, but I've watched a lot of her other videos, and the part I don't like is how she brings up a ton of legitimate issues, and that's it, she just... states them.
What the fuck is the point of just pointing at sexism and saying "this is bad" and not giving out I don't know, solutions, examples of how to do good female characters without leaning on stereotyping.
If you can't give a solution then there's no reason to bring it up in the first place, sexism in EVERY industry is fucking obvious, give ways to fix it.

2:02 Onwards pretty much sums up the whole of this debacle for me.
I'm against sexism, but this whole thing Anita has got going just defies belief with its stupidity.
Looking back, Disney films have obviously racist content. Disney was not a racist though.
No. Works are extensions of their creator. If a work is sexist, its creator is too. If a work is substandard, its creator is a substandard human being.
If you make something, you will, and should, be judged as a human being by it and what it contains.

She gives examples of games that present female characters in positive ways, in this and her last video.
I would find it insulting if she were explaining it to us only, but to the entire video gaming community it makes perfect sense for her to be this simple, especially considering the horrible things said about her by gamers.
She needs to spoonfeed us this stuff because we (the video gaming community) are mostly babies.
it's definitely insulting to me because now i feel like i'm part of a group of people filled with manbabies and immature misogynists. the fact that this stuff gets so much resistance makes me feel weird to be part of the "gaming community". on the other hand i rarely observe much sexism in video games. my fav game is tf2 and it seems like, with the exception of jailbreak servers, the tf2 community is fairly mature. or at least the people who talk on microphone are fairly mature.

Because a lot of people don't know that it's a problem and don't know that it's obvious. Providing a solution only works if people actually acknowledge there is a problem.
Also critical analyses aren't required to provide solutions please take a college literary class.
Usually the PC communities are mroe mature than the console communities she "observed"
I've played Xbox live twice. Once a texan guy called me a canadian faggot when I was killing him and went to go creep my friend's facebook(His live account) and say shit that was on his wall.
Second time I spoke with a bit of a French accent and caused a humongous flame war in which the top players in the game found his twitter and started circle jerking about how "this guy is REALLy french LoL!"
Moral of the story: The gaming community is shit, just PC community is slightly less shit because reasons.

Did you hear that people, gamers are a monolithic hive mind filled with mostly fedora-wearing man-child dudebros incapable of even the slightest amount of critical thinking. Clearly people on random forums and social media sites speak for the entire gaming community whether you like it or not. It's totally not wrong to lump any critics with the immature trolls or stereotype the gaming community.

Well, good then, the older videos of her's I've seen don't, I don't enjoy her videos so I didn't watch this assuming it would be the same, I'm glad I'm wrong.

Her work has generally gotten better over time, IMO, which is what you'd expect.
not this fukken bitch again

What a productive, useful comment. You contributed a lot to this conversion :v: . Thanks for totally not supporting the "angry dudebro gamer" stereotype.

What did you say to me you little bitch!? Wanna go? :v:
I'm sorry I can't say that with a straight face.

To me it seems the same as being a part of a privileged class, or rather part of a group that is more controlled by a privileged class than others. I am a guy and I am not a misogynist, but that does not mean I will get angry every time someone assumes it of me either or explains something to me that I already know.
As a part of this greater community we are also responsible for its actions, despite how much we do not like the actions or our existence within the community. I am not sure if any of this makes sense, but I do not feel insulted, just ashamed of the video gaming community in general for not seeing it as we both do.

Sorry, I see it the same way I see most privileged or male dominated communities or groups. There is no hivemind or consensus, but there is a general agreement on certain issues and how to react to them. A very large portion of any privileged group will agree that keeping their privilege is a must, meaning men instinctively defending against feminism, or rich people defending against the proletariat..
[editline]18th November 2013[/editline]
Sociology trumps rugged individualistic ideology in this case. Privileged groups and groups dominated by privileged people are extremely predictable.

You can view the video gaming community as a sort of society, and imagine the developers and video game journalists and youtube personalities as different classes that determine the actions of the gamers.
While the gamers are very diverse, those that control the community are as diverse as the cast of TF2.

it isn't that anita is offending me, these videos are offensive to me because they make me ashamed of the greater gaming community.
maybe "insult" isn't the right word.
Here, let's have a chart of how you can represent gender in games:
_______|Masculine___|Feminine
Female:|"Ms. Male"___|sexist stereotypes
__Male:|not mentioned|homophobic joke
If I make a game, I'll have a gender choice for the player and present two completely identical characters: both either feminine or masculine. As far as I can tell, that is the only thing that would make Anita happy.
It's great that there's someone speaking out against bad female representation in games, but Anita just picks things apart without offering solutions. She makes the problem worse by expressing her opinions in such an unproductive way.
you don't need to provide solutions for anything if you're doing an analysis lol
In Super Punch Out's fairness, it featured stereotypes of all fighters. It featured a arabian with a turban and a country hick.

Why is causing shame an offensive thing? Shame is like the first step in making things better, her causing shame is a good thing and it shows she is doing a good job by hitting a nerve.

Lot's of videos could be made from that game. Not the best sign.

yea you're right. doesn't make the feeling any less shitty tho
I feel shitty about belonging to the rich white male classes but it is ultimately better than feeling shitty about being not any of those things. Know what I mean?
Shame over a privilege is never as bad as being oppressed, marginalized, erased or discriminated against in some way.
I play bland shep because self inserts are boring.

well yea. why can't we all just treat everyone with respect and dignity?
The answer to that question is this thread
Well actually this one was not so bad.
I guess the answer to that question is the amount of Dumb ratings the OP got
what i like is the typical people rating the thread dumb and then making some dumb post after watching 3 minutes of the vid disappear after a while and then you have some dudes make cool critical posts which show they care enough to not just say something mindbogglingly stupid to the effect of "WHY CANT WE JUST PLAY VIDEOGAMES"; but actually use that brain to post something complimentary to what i watched. keep it up you guys are cool :)

i find it sexist that zeldas outfit is adorned with feminine and frail gold jewelry further pushing the stereotype that women are weak i expected better from you anita i expected better
There would be a lot less sexism in the world if more people like Anita were allowed to post their analyses of feminist theory without being lynched by the internet.

wasnt everyone upset at her because she made $100,000+ for pretty much no good reason aside from channeling negative feedback en masse to look like she "needed" the money?
dont quote me on that im not a scholar
