It's probably because they didn't want to give the knight faction 2 guys with shields, or have 2 "Shield and sword" type characters in the game. That's what I think anyway.
The last thing this game needs are more shield characters anyways.

The gameplay was fantastic but the servers or lack thereof, the awful microtransactions and the terrible balance didn't help the game in any way.
