Man, that unplayable 15fps.
Steams UI is so amazingly inconsistent it amazes me.
I actually really like Steam's UI. It keeps the menu bar, which I'm missing more and more from modern desktop apps, and it likes to keep things small and compressed. And I really like how Steam's chat works.
Unfortunately the UX is hot garbage. It's slow and stuttery, some settings are buried in odd places, and its fascination with loading things in a web wrapper is infuriating. It'd be less infuriating if the web wrapper was any good, but no. It's slow as shit.
.
Witcher 1's is fine though, in fact it displays literally the same things as 3's - save for the quest tracking.

The difference between 3 is it has waaaay less clutter and worthless elements to it though, which was the point
It's massively easier to look at and doesn't have all this useless shit added on

it's also a lot easier to manage and deal with in the inventory itself
I'm glad he brought up Gran Turismo 5 because holy hell that UI should be a crime punishable by death.

ehh i think we're going to have to disagree there as well. In Witcher 1 I can access my entire inventory from one screen - in W3 there are multiple tabs I have to cycle through. yeah its "cleaner" but to be honest it loses a bit of soul in doing so.

Seriously what

you press 1 button lol
If you play with a controller, you don't.
I personally find it a much more enjoyable experience with a controller.
Literally every game sacrifices something to make controllers accessible, that's an issue with controllers themselves and that still isn't an issue because you can still just remap a button on any controller if you're in steam, hell there are like 20 different programs too if you don't use steam.
Witcher 1 doesn't even support controllers, it's all mouse UI, and even with that its bad.
He forgot fucking youtube
Especially on facepunch where you pause and it shows the fucking recommended videos and you accidentally click one and oh fuck you gotta go back
The worst most infuriating part of that bullshit is trying to pause to read something on a video.
I never really understood how much a good UI can improve a game until I played amplitude games, any of their recent 4X games have such sleek presentation and the UI alone is a pleasure to my eyes.
Now I can barely stand going back to Civ since that UI is just large and cumbersome
The Endless games' UI blows every other 4X out of the water. It's beautiful, it's responsive, it's (mostly) self-descriptive, and it perfectly bridges the gap between daft minimalism and information overload.

funny, because to me the endless UI made me feel like I was both missing crucial information and that I was an idiot for not knowing where it would be
Seriously what

Yeah but it's not on the same menu and this is assuming you can remember all fucking 11 hotkeys, seriously, I'm not one for remembering hotkeys worth shit, I map a few to the area around WASD because it's easy to remember but fuck me if has all sorts of shit for specific menus instead of just, open inventory then move over to quest menu or whatever.
Seriously what

No tabs for different aspects of the inventory. All on a single screen.
[T]https://i.imgur.com/76Jf51G.png[/T]
Multiple tabs for different parts of the inventory, plus scrolling. Granted, in W1 the Quest Items has a scroll bar, but you never need to directly access those items so it's not all that big of a deal.
[editline]12th March 2018[/editline]
The 1st game's UI is leagues better than 3's. 3’s is far more in your face than 1’s and takes up a lot of screen real estate. Which is why I got the FriendlyHUD mod to be able to look at things when I want them to appear, and not have them clutter the screen all the time, but still be able to access them (as in vanilla you can only permanently turn them on or off).
Now 2’s UI, hooboy I’m not much of a fan.
I think controllers have done great things for UI.
But it does have some cons, too. Like the Metro series is a bitch to play with a controller just due to the amount of inputs required for the items used.
There are the bonuses to them for sure
Without controllers we wouldn't have weapon Wheels. The greatest UI invention of them all
But then we get stuff like Skyrims everything and its a nightmare
I wish Developers understood and worked with the strengths of controllers rather then making everything dumb and overly simple

I think that UI looks very flat, dull, and light on information, but I haven't played any 4Xes other than Civ so I don't really know what I'm talking about.

You can adblock that. I dunno which one of these it is, it's just the list I've built up over the years of YT updates. Just paste them into ublock origins "my filters" section

I'm pretty sure the xbox auto-renew feature he mentioned is just intentionally bad so people who don't usually check their xbox settings will eventually get billed, it shouldn't even be legal to pull shit like that. I know a few people who've had this happen on both xbox and playstation. On PS4 you at least get a big warning anytime you add a credit card that it's going to turn automatic renewal on
on a different note but similarly affecting ux, subtitles in games.
too many games either have teeny tiny text that are hard to read that's counterproductive to what subtitles are for, too many games have subtitles that aren't broken up evenly or have an entire paragraph on screen at once, poor contrast with what's going on screen, etc.
this is a pretty good article to go through of what games did right and what games did wrong with regards to subtitles.
jfc w8 has nothing on how bad w10 is, every update makes the UI less centralized and more nonsensical, it drives me absolutely insane how I still have trouble with stuff like changing my network from unsafe to safe after a year or whatever using this crap
[editline]12th March 2018[/editline]
Also I was amazed at how bad PSN is terms of actually understanding the game you're trying to buy, it's absurd how bad it actually is.
I've used it since it was first out and I've never actually seen this massive claim people make about how 'wild and insane' the UI is in w10
like jesus christ what is this
[t]https://i.imgur.com/PHKXJUw.jpg[/t]
Gt5's menu was such a fucking mess.
like jesus christ what is this

yeah rpgs usually divide exposition up into bite size sentences :v:
QoL UI features make games so fucking much more enjoyable. The best example is the 'sell all junk' button in GW2. All your bags full of shit? Just go to a vendor and click that button and nut uncontrollably
I don't know if a game has subtitles like I've seen somewhere in the past, where each word only shows up as the character is saying them, so you can't read ahead and you get the effect of the person saying it.
missed opportunity to highlight how bad r6 siege menu is. For some asinine reason each screen is separated with a half second long transition animation that ends up taking fucking forever to get anything done
and dont get me started on how fucking bad reddit is at being a basic website hoyl shit
Not to mention when you wanna open Alpha Packs (crates) and it takes almost 20 seconds to load the damn OPENING PACK screen so you finally can click OPEN and wait another 10+ seconds to load the next screen. Only then it shows some fancy animation and, again, finally, reveals your new cosmetic item
Windows 8.1 was pretty good tho. Also FUCK Netflix auto-play.
Windows 8.1 was pretty good tho. Also FUCK Netflix auto-play.
Fuck autoplay in general, the youtube app for android has started autoplaying videos in the fucking thumbnail list on say, the subscription page.
While the PS4's UI is fluid and nice, it can be sometimes really fucking slow
And the PSN Store is garbage

Steam is bafflingly shite for how long and how much money they've had for it
legitimately, every time I use steam for anything other than right clicking the icon and booting a game i already played, i am astonished by how terrible nearly everything about it is
i'm convinced that steam community is some sort of Saw ARG that never got found out
The worst most infuriating part of that bullshit is trying to pause to read something on a video.
I don't get what you mean by that...
The Steam client's poor performance is because it uses a 14+ year old UI framework meant for in-game UI with Source, so it apparently refreshes every frame and eats performance.
The website's inconsistency is because of how Valve works, their UI designers come and go, and they never make large changes simultaneously, like over the past two years they overhauled the main store page, wishlist, curators, and the stats page. But not at the same time.
