Tbh I wish they'd just rebuild the entire steam program from the ground up, completely from scratch [editline]13th March 2018[/editline] Rebuild Big picture too
Tbh I wish they'd just rebuild the entire steam program from the ground up, completely from scratch [editline]13th March 2018[/editline] Rebuild Big picture too
For a multi-billion dollar company i'd say they could pull it off, but i guess they have this "If it works, it works" mentality.
The PS4 store is fucking hilariously terrible, like, the search feature which you have to individually search for each letter? Are you fucking joking?
The PS4 store is fucking hilariously terrible, like, the search feature which you have to individually search for each letter? He hinted at it but man the Payday 2 server selector is a damn mess [t]https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jMaxz-UWz_Q/maxresdefault.jpg[/t] There's a germ of a cool idea (game takes place in DC, find a job on the map to join) but in practice it's just awful. The neighborhoods on the map have no relation to what jobs will spawn there (several years in, now there are many heists that don't even take place in DC), and though the difficulty skulls are a good hint different jobs can have wildly different base challenge level that's not indicated, so a level 0 noob can easily blunder into a multi-day mission involving a lot of complicated things. Eventually there were improvements like a better mission select, browsing filters, and a 'story mode' that plays missions in a suggested order (I think they added matchmaking too?), but with no server browser this thing is a hot mess.
While the PS4's UI is fluid and nice, it can be sometimes really fucking slow And the PSN Store is garbage
fuckin this. I hate that the only way to search for things is to scroll through the alphabet pressing one fucking letter at a time and every letter you press reduces the amount of letters that appear in an effort to make you only search for things that exist, while helpful in retrospect, is actually annoying and jarring when the letters shift all over the place they made a perfectly good UI text field with inputs that you can even move the controller around to select the letters on. like that shit was genius, then they just threw it all out the window for a weird painstaking menu just to make you pay £50+ for most games [editline]13th March 2018[/editline]
Some UIs like in GTA V...
argh this too. everything is nonsensically divided between the actual menu, the interaction menu, and the phone. the phone is a pain in the ass because you have to scroll through everyone and when you "ring" an NPC you have to wait for them to pick up the phone and it's just unnecessary when u aint tryna RP all my hours in GTA:O and I'm pretty good at shooting/driving but the thing I'm best at is navigating the fuckin menus while doing other shit
He forgot fucking youtube Especially on facepunch where you pause and it shows the fucking recommended videos and you accidentally click one and oh fuck you gotta go back

The worst most infuriating part of that bullshit is trying to pause to read something on a video.
You can hide it with CSS rule:
.ytp-pause-overlay { display: none; }
Might even be enough to add rule in adblock: ##.ytp-pause-overlay [editline]13th March 2018[/editline]
I don't get what you mean by that...
[t]https://files.catbox.moe/7dp7p1.png[/t] Which is also where most subtitles are located if there are. Try to read them when that thing appears on every video by default.
Unfortunately the UX is hot garbage. It's slow and stuttery, some settings are buried in odd places, and its fascination with loading things in a web wrapper is infuriating. It'd be less infuriating if the web wrapper was any good, but no. It's slow as shit.
If they want to go web wrapper they may as well just go full Electron. Would make it easy for them to do Windows/Mac/Linux too.
Tbh I wish they'd just rebuild the entire steam program from the ground up, completely from scratch [editline]13th March 2018[/editline] Rebuild Big picture too
I'd be concerned with the in-game overlay, there are plenty of older games on steam that sort of work with the overlay now, but might not if it was re-written. And you can't expect developers to go back and update their games, for some reason.
For a multi-billion dollar company i'd say they could pull it off, but i guess they have this "If it works, it works" mentality.
They don't have that mentality. They have a flat structure and if there is no interest in a specific project, nobody will bother to do anything.
Like said before, XBOX ONE UI IS FUCKING GARBAGE. I can’t navigate that for shit. PS4 has such a better UI. It’s one of the reasons I prefer PS4 over Xbox.
The two major consoles took a huge step back with the design of their UIs. Both the 360 and the PS3 had great UIs on release. They were easy to navigate and most importantly were very intuitive. The Xbox one and PS4 by comparison are absolute trash. The same thing kind of happened to TF2. I played it again for the first time in years a couple of months ago and the old UI they used across all their source games was just soooo much better.
The Endless games' UI blows every other 4X out of the water. It's beautiful, it's responsive, it's (mostly) self-descriptive, and it perfectly bridges the gap between daft minimalism and information overload. [t]https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/543024637570978242/88EF9228332E096C0034F9CF0F2AEEB149118A78/[/t]
i missed this post, but the endless ui is ugly and put me off from the series.
To be fair, cluttered UIs in MMOs is often a self-imposed pain. One of my best friends regularly leads raids in WoW and he has to keep track of everyone's shit so it often looks like he's playing Aurora 4X or something.
at least on a higher resolution display it doesn't look so bad aurora 4x on the other hand makes my 1080p screen feel small
Might even be enough to add rule in adblock: ##.ytp-pause-overlay
I fucking love you! This works in ublock origin.

One day in the very distant future when Dwarf Fortress is nearly done he can start working on making the UI not terrible.

I feel a majority of UI issues stem from the whole "let's cram so much content in small space!" Mentality. Whatever happened to good old lists?
I feel a majority of UI issues stem from the whole "let's cram so much content in small space!" Mentality. Whatever happened to good old lists?
Lists are bad and good depending on the context and how overly or effectively organized it is usually though the answer to this is just putting things in categories and then listing them like that [editline]14th March 2018[/editline] Good list made into the best list using a mod to search stuff for every character I have [t]https://i.imgur.com/pbhfpt0.png[/t] Resizable windows, though not controller accessible still very decent. [t]https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/100/images/thumbnails/43076-1-1396410928.jpg[/t] still functional, I don't like how much empty space there is personally. However this is a very good improvement from the original skyrim UI [t]https://i.imgur.com/xeFOM7z.png[/t] pretty acceptable, if a bit janky to use due to age [t]https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/101/images/thumbnails/10763-3-1205949211.jpg[/t] Don't do this. This is only good when using tabs that can be navigated from the top or with bumpers. Lists of lists are just a pissing contest with a ceiling fan. I was amazed when I went from Fallout 4 to New Vegas. It's like with the new game they set out to fuck up the pip-boy on purpose. I mean why would they not list notes and holotapes in the order that you picked them up if they did it in previous games? What caused them to remove that feature? Did they think it was too convenient or something, like is rummaging through hundreds of notes to find the one that you just picked up meant to be some kind of improvement? Bonus points when you instantly forget what the note was even called so you don't even know what you're looking for. I swear with these things you only learn to appreciate what you have when you lose it.
on a different note but similarly affecting ux, subtitles in games. too many games either have teeny tiny text that are hard to read that's counterproductive to what subtitles are for, too many games have subtitles that aren't broken up evenly or have an entire paragraph on screen at once, poor contrast with what's going on screen, etc. this is a pretty good article to go through of what games did right and what games did wrong with regards to subtitles. https://www.md-subs.com/what-game-subs-got-wrong-in-2017
I still adore HL2's subtitle system, it's honestly some of the best shit in terms of accessability and I haven't found a game that matches it since, one that includes important sound effects (with varying levels of options for importance), is totally readable, and has different text types and colors to make it clear who you're talking to and how they're speaking to you. [t]https://78.media.tumblr.com/6e8c06af3392cc165e21f83d1fc09811/tumblr_no4okxhLNk1qh1lq6o1_1280.jpg[/t] oh, and source made it super easy to set up subtitles since each audio file had a subtitle and potentially facial animation and other data built right into it, and the subtitles i think were stored in plain text files. very modular.
[t]https://78.media.tumblr.com/6e8c06af3392cc165e21f83d1fc09811/tumblr_no4okxhLNk1qh1lq6o1_1280.jpg[/t]
A (customisable) captioning system like this should be the standard all AAA games should strive for, much like hitting framerates and game balance. I can understand a smaller team putting it aside behind more vital tasks, but larger companies there's no excuse. It boggles my mind that in Overwatch, despite all of its inclusivity, accessibility and focus on characters there's still no subtitles, and by extension no character voicelines or vital gameplay cues (like ultimates) for the deaf or hard of hearing.
Microsoft in general has had fucking awful UI design recently. It's as if they let some amateur designer make things look pretty, but nobody with an ounce of UX knowledge seems to work on their UI teams.
MS have never had much luck with UI and UX. Windows has always been a clusterfuck of stuff from 3.1 mixed in with stuff from whatever version you're actually using. Style wise it's either been bare bones as fuck (pre-XP), Fischer Prices First UI (XP itself), or whatever the fuck they were trying with Aero. Aero was at least easy on the eyes I suppose. And Windows 10 is still in a weird limbo of some Windows 7/8 UI elements being mixed in with the new 10 design language. The XBox UI has also always been a bit of a mess. The OG XBox UI was just nasty to look at thanks to it all being various shades of green and black. The 360 Blades were genuinely ugly and used space weirdly. Their attempts to move to the Metro design language have issues of their own where individual tiles have too much going on (Metro really doesn't work if a tile is playing video amongst a bunch of flat coloured static tiles, it just looks bad). I just don't get how they can't work this out. Metro for all intents and purposes should work quite well everywhere, but it doesn't ever seem to have a good implementation.
Microsoft in general has had fucking awful UI design recently. It's as if they let some amateur designer make things look pretty, but nobody with an ounce of UX knowledge seems to work on their UI teams.
They supposedly have quite a decent design team. It's just they have major issues with integrating their designs into actual products because everything is separated into separate teams that aren't communicating properly.
Whatever happened to being able to play long Youtube videos from where I last left off? It used to do that, but it randomly stopped for me, so now I have to guess where I was last when watching, say, a archived Twitch stream or something.

Maybe that's M$ way of trying to get me to buy a xbox one x. Oh and the amount of ads inside of the xbox one UI is unforgivable.

I listen to youtube-podcasts at work, and when I get home it continues where I left off when I resume listening on my home-PC.
