you can be an anime enthusiast/otaku without being a weaboo
you can like anime without gluing pornographic posters to every square inch of your walls with greasy white fluid while singing the theme to luckey star in a goth lolita maid uniform
yeah you can but wheres the fun in that
look at any sensationalist headlines thread that has 'japan creates/invents/does x'. you will quickly notice what i mean
'haha what will those crazy japs do next???'
Do they not making crazy stuff?
Do they not making crazy stuff?
exactly the attitude i'm talking about
japan as a country produces just as much weird shit as america does. you only think so much more is produced because of shitty sensationalist reporting sites like kotaku that want to paint asia as some other dimension
hahaha, all the otaku on the forum defending this guy and changing the topic to japan to avoid being embarrassed

Yes, you're right. People will think that. Many others, however, will not give you a second glance. You ever been a minority yet? Then yes you will have that feeling, but its only as strong as you are needlessly self aware of the fact that you're a minority in a foreign country. In other words: don't let it bother you.
I've lived in Japan for 3 years now. I've befriended, worked with, drunk with, and got into a few verbal fights with the Japanese. Shocker: they all have different ideas and opinions. "Most" of them are not xenophobic or racist or are judgemental towards foreigners. That sure as shit doesn't mean they have a certain bias embedded in their society but not once have I felt unwelcome in Japan on the basis of race.
And btw, anime is a huge deal here. But I've met more normal anime fans than otaku. Although one time in a used book store a middle aged man was reading an erotic manga right next to a high school girl reading some yaoi bullshit.
Around the parts of Tokyo the people are very friendly to pretty much everyone. My friend came back from japan a week ago, he was there for 1 month and he was like a B-star celebrity just because he was a tall Dutch guy.
He went to eat in some back-alley sushi bar and got asked to go on a picture randomly. :v: Next to that the only negative 'alienated' experience he got was in some small village behind Mount Fuji where the locals didn't want foreigners.
Next to that even without knowing Japanese he got around pretty easily, information kiosks where everywhere and in general he had a great time, but yeah he went there with quite some cash and came home with the most awesome electronical stuff.
Wow, japan is grEAT
Everything is an anime!
lol that's a overstatement.
after living there for 5 years, i'd say it's true. they are pretty xenophobic.
HK is probably way better since a lot of people have some grasp on english and they're not all xenophobic assholes when it comes to foreigners.
They aren't being xenophobic, they just don't like Otaku in general. The term "Otaku" (in eastern context) literally means "outcast", it's often thrown at the "Chris-Chan" type of people.
They used to receive a lot of flak in the late 80s.
I got a Japanese guy's perspective. He said that David appears seperated from reality, which worried him about David's future. About how David's treated in the show, he said that David was a subject of curiosity, though he agreed that he was being treated pretty horribly, and added that the TV show would be considered a low quality show.
I noticed that the two guys apparently called him a weeb. Was that intentionally dropped in by the translator? If not, that's hilarious.

yeah the translator took quite a few artistic liberties there

Batman TAS already didn't understand science very well but Beyond took that up to about a thousand. They explained Shriek's silencers as working by taking the sound vibrations it receives and outputting the opposite vibration. How the fuck is that supposed to work if the sound vibrations hit your ear first?

Which only makes it worse how a lot of anime fans in the west refer to themselves as otakus.
You're effectively saying you're a basement dweller you moron.

Waitu piggu go home!

what's to say the area you lived in wasn't just a haven for xenophobia?
I live in a place where foreigners have their windows smashed but I wouldn't dare say everyone here is xenophobic because of a few people that are caught behind the times. that way of thinking is ignorant and almost xenophobic in itself
I am a 6'2", blond haired, blue-eyed american man.
I'd fight right in
to be honest i'm a tidbit sick of how facepunch has set the idea that japan is 100% some kind of weird and wonderful paradise for weird shit and anime set in stone. a country like no other filled with people like no other. it doesn't happen so much with any other country for whatever reason. maybe because a huge portion of facepunch is borderline obsessed with the bloody country
The country is fucking weird though. Even their population is in decline because they don't have the need to make a damn baby. Alot of them kill themselves and they are assholes to anyone not Japanese.

good to know that japan's socioeconomic situation has been nailed on the head by internet-famous poster 'itsjustspacy'

Facepunch has been getting really weeaboo.
It seems now every time I scroll a thread 50% of the avatars are always anime.
In Japan, an otaku is essentially the same as what we would call a weeaboo except that weeaboo would imply the person is not Japanese, and an otaku probably is, except when weeaboos call themselves otakus, which just reinforces the whole thing.
I like anime as much as the next guy, shit's great. It's acceptable to like Anime, pretty much no matter where you are. Except maybe at your grandparents house. Most people won't look down on you for it. Hell, most people won't even know unless they share similar interests. What people will look down on you for is being fucking obsessed with the shit. And that's where weaboos and otakus come in.
If you're a normal functioning person who happens to watch anime, fantastic. But if you wear anime themed clothing, (excluding possibly graphic tees if they're tasteful) try to talk Japanese, openly claim to have a "waifu", obsess over characters, have 36 figmas set up around your computer, a body pillow of any kind, a wall that you don't even know the color of due to it being covered by way too many posters, shoehorn anime into conversations, etc. you are a weeaboo/otaku and people probably won't like you.
I openly talk about anime with friends because we share an interest, but I'm not going to meet some random person at the store and then start talking about the newest episode of [insert anime here] unless I know they share similar interests.
That's pretty much the same with everything though. Nobody really cares what a person likes or enjoys, because that's their business, but when a person is outwardly obsessed with something it's different, often because the openness of said obsession forces it to be other people's business.
[editline]bananas[/editline]
I suppose I should add that in Japan, an otaku can indeed be someone who is obsessed with anything, not just anime. I meant to imply that without directly saying it since it isn't really relevant to the topic, but some apparently felt the need to point it out despite it not really being related, so I added this.
They pretty much go hand in hand.
Dunno about that. I think its just the fact that the obsessed ones are like that and are the ones you actually notice.
Me and my best friend have watched tons of anime and read tons of manga and used to talk about it a lot only with each other like it was a secret, all in all I have probably finished 20-40 different anime but you won't find a single poster, pillow, figurine or anything else in either of our houses, nor do we have a crazed obsession of moving to Japan. I got my girlfriend to watch a couple of the classics (Trigun, Outlaw Star, Full Metal Alchemist) even though she would always say anime is for faggots and she actually really enjoyed them.
Its the same with any fanbase, the obsessed most outspoken ones are the ones that become the stereotype (Beliebers, Directioners etc) while there are a lot of normal people who indulge but don't feel the need to talk about it 24/7. I find myself watching it less and less though apart from the odd few episodes of stuff that I decide to catch up on when I feel like it, since sadly there is a sea of rubbish to wade through when I'm looking for something that actually sounds appealing.
(Disclaimer: I hate the mass amount of boring romance/fanservice/'awkward nerd meets hot outgoing girl' fantasy animes who appeal to lonely neckbeards, if you avoid crap like that and watch the good stuff then there really is something out there for most people, but its basically those combined with the people obsessed with them that give anime a bad name)
