No PS4-PS2 Backwards Compatibility? 15 Bucks To Repurchase PS2 Games..

I guess, if you don't like it, there's always emulators. (Which aren't illegal as of the latest DMCA revision, as long as you own the software you're emulating.)
Or you can buy a PS2 for $30, and play all the old games you're keeping around for some unknown reason.

From what I hear PS2 emulation is a pain in the dick although I want to give it a shot anyway

It's gotten better over the years, more convenient. You do still have to dump your bios from your own PS2 that you own, though, so the only real advantages are resolutions and texture filtering. It's still much easier to just get a PS2 and use that.
Looks like Sony's implementation still uses their terrible upscaling, as well, instead of rendering at higher resolutions. That's just disappointing.
This can be useful if you never had the game prevously, or if the game is harder to find than usual (A copy of the original Dark Cloud would go for £20 preowned, it's cheaper to get it digital through this.) but usually you would be better off playing certain games on the PC platform like GTA. Emulation might be a better choice and something to consider before using this service.
Depends on a game by game basis.
It depends on the game. I obviously won't buy super common games for $15, but if you put like the whole .hack collection of games on there? Then you're saving like a total of over $100 by not buying those things physical. Same goes for Xenosaga Episodes 2 & 3. Then there are games that I just missed and can't get the disks for anymore without going through eBay which can also have some jacked prices.

The reason why physical copies are so expensive is because the rarity of the disc/cartridge, not the game itself.
Does anyone have any idea how hard it is to emulate the PS2? Both the PS2 and PS3 have notoriously complex hardware that is incredibly hard to properly emulate.
$10-15 is a bit steep, sure, but when you look into just how much dev time went into that PS2 emulator and into game-specific fixes for every game they release for digital download, then factor in that the original publisher is still going to take a large cut of the money, it makes more sense.
Also, as someone pointed out earlier, chances are the PS4 just can't even read anything from the specially formatted PS2 discs. EDIT: nevermind they're normal DVDs, this part is BS yeah
Anyway just get a PS2 slim if $15 is too much.
PS2 emulation is prett decent, it should be no problem for Sony, the DevKit of the PS2 back then was entirely emulated.
I can't believe people actually thought they would be able to play PS2 discs on their PS4.

It's actually pretty well polished right now. Not sure what games can cause emulation problems so you'd have to look that up yourself.

Ratchet & Clank has crazy issues with GPU, so you need to use CPU emulation which is slow as shit unless you have some top-line hardware.
the ps2 will forever be the best console ever

The announcement came not long after Xbox One got Backwards Compatibility so I don't think it would of been out of the question to assume Sony would want to compete with that.
I don't get it, the Sony trailer doesn't imply at all you can play your PS2 discs or anything of the sort.
I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that since the hardware is old they will have trouble making it so you can use your PS2 Discs on your PS4, and Nintendo actually had the same problem when it came to running GBA games on the 3DS (Yes I know it was download only but my point still stands) so it's not entirely out of the yard...same with very old PC games. But I will say this, charging people 15 bucks (20 Australian) to buy a game from the early 2000s is bullshit. I mean fucking PS1 games like Metal Gear and Silent Hill still go around for 15 AUD, and they are fucking years old.
Either make them free, or make them incredibly cheap. Like 5 bucks.
Also fuck you for making me re-purchase my PS3 games.
Do what Microsoft did, insert, redownload, bam done. And it's more possible because it was just last gen, 3 years ago.
Fuck you for making me have to pay for PS+....and fuck Sony for upping the PS+ 3 Month Subscription by an extra 8 bucks.
I would love for my PS2 games to be shoved in and played like that, but you do have to consider the technical limitations, but it's not an exception for PS3 games.
He is right though, Sony was Pro-Consumer back in the 7th Gen, you could share accounts and download games from it, you could play online for free, and if you got an early model, you could just play your PS2 games on it without having to rebuy it.
Now they are not.
Bunch of bullshit.
It's pretty much unfeasible to run PS3 games without having a Cell processor included with the PS4.
Honestly don't see how the prices surprise anyone. If I recall correctly the prices of the PS2 classics are pretty pricey too. Only thing I'm pissed about is the fact that I own Twisted Metal Black already via the PS2 classics on PS3 but NOPE. The trophy feature has got me sold anyways.
Would be nice of Sony to do it, but they're not even remotely forced to.
Just download PCSX2 on PC and plug in a controller,
it has all the upscaling, anti-aliasing, framerate boosting features you'd want.
Honestly, I don't have a problem with Sony charging money for this. I have a problem with them charging $15 for this. Maybe a couple of bucks, but no more.
I'd drop 5 bucks for the 1080p upscale. That's about it
also only 6 game's thats bullshit
I'll pay for Katamari Damacy in 1080p with trophies.

Some games work pretty well. Sly Cooper games and Katamari Damacy run flawlessly for me. Some games like Destroy All humans have lots of visual glitches but are still otherwise perfectly playable. Some games like Ratchet and Clank have insane graphical glitches that can make the game unplayable.
I don't think the blu-ray player would even read a PS2 game since they use entirely different disc types. Even still, that is a steep price. I would be okay with rebuying it, but not at $15.
I just want to be able to replay Kingdom hearts before I get Kingdom Hearts 3.

PS4s can play DVDs, which PS2 games use.

But it's been confirmed to render at 4x the base resolution :v:
To be honest this whole backwards compatibility issue has been embarrassing from day 1. It shouldn't be an issue yet here we are and as a PC game player is only alienating me further from going down the console route ever again. This whole Sony stunt is just fucking over consumers pure and simple.
But it's been confirmed to render at 4x the base resolution :v:
PCSX2 goes up to 6X :smug:
I hope this means I could get that Berserk PS2 game and FFVii ps2 game
I just want to be able to replay Kingdom hearts before I get Kingdom Hearts 3.
theres uh, the 1.5 and 2.5 hd collections on ps3
unless you dont have a ps3 in which case they said they might bring to to ps4 but only after kh3
anyways my problem with pcsx2 is when i tried to emulate yakuza 1&2 and .hack//gu they had bad rendering bugs in hardware mode, and cpu rendering ran awful.

Pretty much. PS2 emulation is way better than it was years ago, but these wacky quirks like this still have me falling back to a softmodded PS2 with component cables and an HDD. The nice thing about playing on the actual hardware is that it mostly "just works". And since its component, its not blurry, just low res. Big difference.
Imagine they actually allowed you to buy games that were actually unavaliable on the region you live in. sans arc the lad (to an extent) none of the launching titles are worth $15.
you're better off getting a softmodded ps2 like someone mentioned above.
