But there's been a solid output of excellent episodes. You can't just focus on the crap ones and say that that makes up their entire output.

I would much rather get yelled at for taking a break than at making the entire show spontaneously combust and crash land into the ocean.
Making animations is hard.
Making animations that become popular is out of the animator's control.
Making sequels to randomly popular animations and meeting the worlds expectations: near to impossible.
Given that, I thought Pokeawesome2 was chuckle-able, but I must admit, overall I am disappointed. But I'm also not surprised and I'm glad Ego still made it. Take away the crazy expectations and this would probably have been much more liked.
6/10 for me.
He needs to make something that comes straight from the heart for it to work, I think.

It wasn't that great, but you can't put all the blame on Arin. He's got a busy enough life as it is, and you can't exactly hope that everything's going to live up to expectations. Sure he raised alot of hype for it, but that's only because he wanted to support his fans. Building something from expectations is hard to get right.
Now that PokeAwesome 2 is out of the way, maybe he'll get back into the groove of things. Seemed like it was the biggest burden on his shoulders.

The main problem is that the whole video was a buildup to the last scene, which was a pretty cliche and predictable ending. There wasn't much humor before it, so it made it overall underwhelming.

sort of what happens when you work on something for that long, it becomes harder to see its flaws because they would invalidate the amount of time you've spent on it

Honestly, the way I interpret it makes it sound like the 'polished as fuck' comment was aimed towards the animation quality and so forth, rather than the actual joke itself. Odds are he was so carried away in doing the animation that he just didn't think the joke through well enough for over two minutes or such.

The ending would have been way funnier if it didn't have that jarring bizarre face. The characterization and attitudes made no sense - in the gym, he's this goofy likely half retarded kid that brock takes pity on and then the kid kinda embarrasses him in return. Then out of nowhere he turns into a creepy weirdo who's trying to take revenge on him for not totally admitting he defeated him by fucking his girlfriend. IDK if it makes me even more retarded than that ending to have thought this hard about a flash cartoon but god damn that just made no sense. Besides, the build-up in the animation mostly makes you feel bad for Brock and then the ending you're in his perspective so it's even creepier.
