The free climbing one without safety lines made me feel terribly uneasy, but the one in op is pretty cool. I think I'd go for a safety line if I ever did that job (fat chance, I'm way too lazy).
And then your parachute fails.
Out of the over 2 million jumps people make every year, only a small handful of people die due to their parachute failing to deploy. You have higher odds of dying in an actual plane crash than dying from a chute malfunction. [editline]20th April 2015[/editline]
They really should get parachutes for these jobs.
It's unnecessary, there's 2 safety carabiners all climbers are required to have at all times, usually switching from one to the other. More experienced technicians can usually free climb these towers using only the safety clips a small number of times or even not at all until the reach the top, then they clip in to free their hands for replacing the bulbs or other components at the top.
The easy part is climbing up. The hard part is climbing down.
Climbing down is not tiring at all (unless you carry a lot of stuff with you). Climbing up is tiring, (especially if you carry a lot of stuff with you). I've climbed down 200meters without any breaks for breathers and it took me ~20 minutes. I don't know how long would it take to climb up but it wouldn't be as easy or as fast. There are cable/rail guides that you can use with your harness like these They go up but they don't go down without help.
They really should get parachutes for these jobs.
seems like a good way to get snagged on a guy-wire
For some reasons it makes me want to do this job. I like height
I climbed a 300ft tower about a month ago. I would climb up to the top no problem, but FUCK CLIMBING UP THE TRANSMITTERS.
