I don't see why. We have plenty of sports that compete for the best reflexes and physique, why can't we have one that uses strategy and brain power?
A better comparison would be chess, really. The same sort of stigma existed for professional chess in America before Bobby Fischer came around.

Honestly, Starcraft is almost exactly like a more in-depth chess. You've got your opening moves, your counters, your fundamental strategies. There's just a few more pieces on the board, and it happens to be electronic with a badass Sci-Fi setting.

Starcraft looks like a good game but I doubt I'd ever be able to enjoy playing it online when there's people out there that live and breathe Starcraft. Does anyone play it casually

Yes, but not as casually as you might find elsewhere. Still everyone is broken into leagues so you'd be with people about your skill level.

There's plenty of casuals that play SC2. I'd say the only people that aren't casuals are in Gold+ league. Granted, learning to play will be cruel and unforgiving, but when you learn some strategies you can easily work your way up to higher leagues.
