It's a nice place. No, the school paid for the visit since Yiannopoulos was a guest speaker for a student organization. Student organizations file for funding through the DePaul activities board at the beginning of the year. If they don't, they're not officially a school group. DePaul's policies towards student groups make it nearly impossible for them to intervene in these situations. While Yiannopolus as a speaker would not be allowed normally if invited by faculty or staff due to his intentionally inflammatory and outrage-baiting attitude, the school couldn't do anything about it. DePaul faculty/staff are not allowed to cancel events called by student groups and they're required by Illinois law to abide by those policies. This is why the officers were told to stand down and wait for any acts of [I]actual [/I]violence. Summary: Conservative student organization hosts Yiannopoulos specifically to cause trouble for the university. They want revenge for getting in trouble for shit they pulled in the past protesting abortion on campus without permission, while also causing property damage. DePaul's main intention is to never stifle respectful open discourse of any topic, no matter how divisive it may be.
