that's exactly what happens in BF1 and BF2 though????
[editline]7th October 2015[/editline]
like just retardedly running around slapping vehicles with your lightsaber.
Yah but I didn't think it looked good back then either. Now it is just sillier with everything else looking so good.
Also if were going by gameplay which you assumed is what I ment, it looks worse and even less then what the previous BFs had.
I think everyone's nostalgia goggles for battlefront 2 is clouding judgement on this game.
not really, its just bad and not what everyone wanted/expected.
not really, its just bad and not what everyone wanted/expected.
I.e., not Battlefront 2
JKA MP wasn't just spam to win that shit required a lot of skill.
His voice is off because I'm pretty fucking sure they've just edited recordings from the movie. The quality of it sounds so awful compared to everything else going on.
If you got choked or gripped in JKA MP you were done. Hardly anything at all.

I played the game recently and that statement seems like a scapegoat. Battlefront 2 isn't perfect, or even excellent but its a great combined arms Star Wars game.
This new Battlefront is just... I don't even know what the fuck to call this game other than "blah".
If you got choked or gripped in JKA MP you were done. Hardly anything at all.
uh i'm pretty sure you could force push your way out of that shit
"Press fire to win fight" really pisses me off and disappoints me.
I admit it would've been cooler if it were more like a QTE and if one side screws up they get slashed, but if both succeed they just push each other back.
HOWEVER, this isn't the worst thing they could've done.
QTE is not a great idea with network lag involved. Battlefield 3 already tried QTE for knifing reversal, half the time it didn't work for the attacked, half the time it was almost automatic reversal for the attacker.
I.e., not Battlefront 2
I dont know, sometimes working and expanding on a game that clearly worked is a good idea.
I think everyone's nostalgia goggles for battlefront 2 is clouding judgement on this game.
Not really nostalgia goggles if i can fire it up right now on Steam and it's as fun as it was 10 years ago.
I don't think I'll be able to say the same about this.
I'm glad they're doing an open beta. That might help a lot of people to figure out whether they enjoy the changes or not.
So. Just played it.
It's basically every other mainstream game. "KILLSTREAKHEADSHOT+999999" and other notices to really let you know that you're THE one Godwarrior. Random matchmaking puts you up with mutes, who never utter a word, so you feel like you're playing with bots who just shoot at everything... if it didn't have a StarWars stamp, it'd be just another generic shooter. Not that I was expecting them to come up with something better than a reskinned Battlefield, but there was a tiny amount of hope before.
But hey, it's StarWars, Hoth looks nice and people will buy it.
EDIT: Well, posted in the wrong thread. Was meant for the games section.
I just played it and found it quite enjoyable actually.
First part of Hoth feels a little cramped though.
It's just so bland, it's like every other generic shooter except with lasers and none of the fun elements of battlefront 1 and 2
I.e., not Battlefront 2
Because battlefront 2 was fun, this isn't
People didn't want them to change the entire game (which in this case they're done nothing but remove things and not really added anything), they just wanted battlefront 2 with better graphics and shooting mechanics
I dont know, sometimes working and expanding on a game that clearly worked is a good idea.
Are you implying game developers are smart enough to do this
There's not many games that make it passed a 3rd installment unless they drastically change how it plays or release it really close to eachother
That or they are games that are shit out every year or two (assassin's creed, halo, mario games, etc) not saying it's a bad thing but I am saying this is to be expected
So I got early access to the beta.
I'm sorry to report it's just bad.
I really wanted it to be good. I really did. It's just not.
In terms of visuals, sound design, and general atmosphere, the game gets a straight up 10/10. The timing of the music, the sound design, the chatter between characters, the sounds of weapons and explosions, it really feels like you're in one of the movies.
And then you get to actually playing the game.
-Vehicles are power-ups you pick up randomly around the map, making it impossible to coordinate having air support up when it's time to fire on the vulnerable AT-ATs. Same goes for air strikes and turrets.
-Getting to play a hero is completely random, not score or score-streak based.
-The overheating of the blasters prevents you from killing more than 2-3 people in rapid succession.
-The sniper rifle is a one shot, 7 second cool down that ANYONE can carry at all times with no penalty (besides it taking up a card slot). This means that you can play as a riflemen, see a guy far away, switch to this magic sniper and kill them from across the map, then continue to play as a riflemen. You can do this every 7 seconds.
-This was known, but the no-classes really ruins the pacing of the game. There's no need to resupply or heal or do any sort of coordination because literally everything you can use is some sort of cooldown, including grenades!
-Strafing is incredibly effective, and I mean the ultra gay rapid-back and forth kind of strafing where you just mash A and D and your character essentiallys twerks while dodging blaster fire.
-You can also bunny hop, and I mean old school style bunny hop, because there's no stamina system.
-The above two points, plus the introduction of jetpacks, and the fact that kill times are near that of Halo in some cases, makes firefights completely non-sensical and almost luck based, with people jumping around and dodging while the insane HP regen keeps them alive.
-No squads or voice chat, so coordination is just null
I really wanted it to be good but I was laughing half the time I was playing it. It's that un-fun.
Except it isn't bad.
Vehicles being map pickups takes away stealing the other team's vehicles and makes the battlefield consistent. Imperials won't be in Rebel vehicles etc. It also allows ships to exist in the sky, even without a player pilot. This works with the atmosphere you were praising.
Heroes are random. I don't understand why anyone thinks a large scale game should have iconic characters locked behind a skill wall. This game already has a huge casual fanbase.
Sniper is dumb but with release having a lot more options it won't matter nearly as much. Most players trade it for a jetpack, anyway. It'll probably have a longer cooldown, too. I'm not defending the choice but it certainly doesn't ruin the game.
The "ultra gay" strafe is easily beatable. You can lead your shots or throw a grenade. Both of the alt blasters destroys this play style entirely. This criticism is especially strange after complaining that heroes and vehicle weren't skill-based. Bunny hopping also destroys your accuracy.
If you're wanting a competitive game, this isn't it. But if you're wanting a game that absolutely nails huge battlefields in an awesome universe, play Battlefront. It will reward you for learning it's systems, but it isn't necessary to having an awesome time.

No, seriously. This game is cool as shit. Please try it out, the beta is free and on all major platforms.

What was wrong with stealing the other teams vehicles? I loved doing that.
What was wrong with stealing the other teams vehicles? I loved doing that.
I'd hate it if I was on Hoth and had to deal with Rebels stealing our AT-ST's every game. They can balance asymmetrical maps with vehicles in mind. It also keeps everything smooth and cinematic, which fits a Star Wars game.
At this point it basically devolves into arguments of whether the game should be cinematic like what DICE is aiming for, or traditional like the previous Battlefront games as what the fans demand.
The vehicle coins are (admittedly) very strange. But to say it makes the game bad is ridiculous. They serve a very clear purpose.
I've been playing the beta, and I really like it.
Everything looks beautiful. The hero-character moments are cool, too. Vader suddenly popping into the hallways in Hoth was cool to watch (and die to). Tatooine and Hoth both look absolutely gorgeous.
I like the powerup system and recharging, personally; It speeds things up quite a bit.
I miss the class system, but the current loadout system does its job.
Been playing this beta, some people are so salty that this game isn't just a high-res upgrade from 2005. I'll admit I miss there not being hanger bays and vehicle spawns because I loved the aesthetic. But what I didn't love and I'm glad isn't in this game? 10 people waiting on the spawn mashing a button to get in first so they can be the first one to crash it on take-off. Vehicles seemingly spawn in the same place and it's seldom a spot that you can easily camp. Running to get a vehicle is a risk at the moment, and it's a risk worth taking. The loss of classes is also a bit of a shame, but honestly I think it works just fine being a card based thing instead. There's currently not a tonne of variety in choices but then this isn't the finished and complete product.
Cooldowns aren't a real problem either. In a game that's about being on the Battlefront of awesome Star Wars battles, there's nothing wrong with you being able to throw a grenade every 15 or so seconds or change your weapon. It keeps the game fast and with 40 on 40 players it really is impressive just how fluid and organic every skirmish is in the overall battle. Definitely give this game a try (even if the voice work for Vader and Luke is off).
i think this is a pretty good idea, but i'm going to miss bailing out to avoid dying
You can still do that. In the AT STs, at least.
Can you still steal enemy vehicles? That was my favorite part of the old games was sneaking into the enemy base and taking thier ships.
Can you still steal enemy vehicles? That was my favorite part of the old games was sneaking into the enemy base and taking thier ships.
no
The vehicle powerups worked out a lot better than I thought they would. Placing them in exposed locations near the front line keeps everyone trying to push forward and adds a good amount of risk to counteract how powerful most of the vehicles are.
It also prevents the enemy team from stealing your vehicles, something I never liked in other games.
I found it enjoyable and it clearly needs some tweaking still
But I think overall the game has been streamlined way too much.
QTE is not a great idea with network lag involved. Battlefield 3 already tried QTE for knifing reversal, half the time it didn't work for the attacked, half the time it was almost automatic reversal for the attacker.
Battlefield 3 didn't have knife reversal. That was Battlefield 4 and the quick time event is completely clientside, so if you get knifed from the front the only way you can lose is if you press the melee button too early or too late. It lasts a second and it's always the same timing. For the record, I've probably lost less than 5 reversals out of 50.
The only REAL issue with the knife reversal is that since it's client side for the defender, the attacker might sometimes knife from the side but because of network delay the server decides you were facing the enemy, which forces a potential reversal.
So the problem isn't the QTE itself but clientside vs serverside when it comes to melee dectection.
[editline]8th October 2015[/editline]
If you want ACTUAL gameplay issues with Battlefront, the biggest real offender is the complete and utter lack of any kind of spawn protection. It's 100 possible to spawn camp the rebels with a turret behind their spawn.
I don't get why the sniper rifle being a card is making people so salty. Would you prefer a class dedicated to sitting back? Or are the the kind of selfish dickhead who would prefer all the things you don't like are removed and fuck everyone who enjoys them? As it stand having a single shot every few seconds is a great way of adding versatility to loadouts, now I can move up quickly with a jump pack, fight among my team, and also pick off guys running for the other flag or trying to flank us.
It seems to me like a lot of people just want to hate this game and aren't going to give it a fair chance, saying it's worse than the old games and acting like they didn't have glaring problems.

There is spawn protection, you can't take damage for a couple of seconds after spawning or until you shoot. People spawning on their partner have killed me a few times because I couldn't hurt them.

That was Battlefield 4.
And it was a complete disaster. It meant it was so risky to use the knife that the only situation in which you should was if they were completely unaware.
