I don't get people bitching about how e3 is all hype. No shit it's all hype it always was. It's literally there to showcase developers new games. They aren't going to have a beta and show raw footage all the time, of course they'll show off the good parts. Thats basic marketing. Most of these are completely unfinished games anyways so thats even more obvious that what they show is gonna be heavily tweaked to appear good to give the press something to write home about.
Shenmue 3 setting a precedent? *insert voxel-based zombie survival game #1021001201290* is not going to be getting stage presence at E3 so I don't know what kind of precedent this is going to set for people. Am I supposed to act like the possibility of Sony kickstarting a sequel to a dead but beloved franchise is a bad thing? Sure, it's unnecessary but it gauges interest and it brings in a ton of advertising and traffic and I completely understand why they do it.
Also this guy is a cynical asshole, and I can't really blame him given recent years but take a step back from things and think about it all. There's much less to be skeptical about than last year's E3 considering most "reveals" are coming out in five to eight months from now. Significantly less chance of a game changing direction and being something other than it was advertised when it's going to be in your hands in November.
Remain skeptical about Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Nier 2, but Uncharted 4, Deus Ex and Hitman? Historically speaking, you have been given what you've seen at the trade shows.

It's not setting a precedent for being Shenmue 3. It's because it's a Kickstarter being announced at Sony's conference. A Kickstarter that wasn't even used to fund the game, but to gauge interest.

If Sony funded it completely, it'd be a PS4 exclusive. I'm glad that their project remains theirs as a result of this.

Also showing those tweets about Hololens was stupid. In the first person, it is showing "holograms in your living room" so nitpicking how people word it on Twitter is ridiculous. Whenever I explain it to people outside of the technology sector, I just say "it basically creates holograms" and I've actually used the damn thing.
He's talking about Shenmue's funding like Star Citizen didn't exist.
Wow does this guy really expect people to get the Pip-Boy replica to use it while playing FO4? Fuck no, people get limited editions like the Fallout 4 one because they like the series and having a replica or model of something from that series is cool. The phone app gimmick is just a nice little touch.
The issue with Shenmue 3 getting a Kickstarter is that Kickstarters are for projects that don't have the funding, Shenmue 3 clearly already had the funding. Big developers are now going to jump on Kickstarter as a way of pushing the toxic anticonsumer preorder culture even further. If they don't get enough preorders then they won't release the game in certain regions, or worse hold the game hostage until they do get the preorder profits they want.

It's not even a preorder since the game hasn't even started production
I'm p sure that shenmue thing might have been against kickstarter's TOS

I used to like watching his videos, but this dude is overly cynical and practically depressed from playing and reviewing video games.

And SEGA owns the Shenmue rights
what is go great about Shenmue's I am not against it I just don't get the hypE.? ??
I really enjoyed what SuperBunnyHop had to say, never heard of him before.
Thanks for sharing.
He really only made a few statements that I can't get behind.
The plastic argument about dumb merch? Age old problem that's really a "problem", and not a problem. It's a non issue. People who like dumb shit like that buy dumb shit like that, power to them in my opinion, but I'm not going to engage in it and i'm certainly not forced to.
And his ramble about not showing footage just didn't work at all for me. E3 is a pretty good event when you don't buy into it. When you just watch it for the footage and you don't go "Oh amazing this'll be amazing" at the things you see and you just take it with grains of salt, then it's awesome.
Though, I'll be honest, I loved this years E3, and showing off Mad Max, Just Cause 3, Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, For Honor, and some other titles, we saw gameplay, in some cases gameplay that looked like it might be more than a bullshot for once. I'll keep my mind open but i'm still skeptical, but even with that skepticism, I was pretty pleased this year with the footage we got.
i dont get how him saying hype is bad for the consumer is a bad and overly cynical thing
do you people even remember watchdogs? destiny? halo 4? spore?
also his videos on cons are still optimistic as hell
He's being cynical because he's trying to referring to e3 trailers as commercials, like these aren't the things that people haven't been waiting to see for years. And I know not every game lives up to its hype, but e3 is the time to show off what they've been working on. and they are obviously going to make it look as good as possible.
SBH is quickly getting a bit overly cynical in my opinion
Honestly while E3 is just E3 really, this was one of the finest E3's I've ever seen.
Honestly the Beth Conference made it all worth it.

I can't get over how Phil Spencer was on the stage for the PC game show, just to really sit there and not really announce much other than Killer Instinct and Gears 1 remastered on PC.
definitely a better e3 than last year. I thought the sony show and the beth show was really damn good. (and hearing todd howard comment how the pipboy edition is a pre-order gimmick was pretty great)
Why they brought back Aisha Tyler for the Ubi conf, I don't know. They should have used the PC conference host for the Ubi conf
How much of a "recap" is this of E3? I didn't even watch single minute of it so does this cover most if not all of it?

frankly, if an E3 where the highlights are all 4th/5th installments of a franchise or remakes is one of the finest, then that's pretty lame

A good game is a good game, regardless of whether it's an established IP or not. Look at what Kojima did in response to Konami's "you need to make another Metal Gear game". He made the game he wanted to make, while tying in the Metal Gear franchise to make it commercially viable.
Fallout 4 looks like an improvement in every way and Dishonored 2 took an unexpected turn. Dark Souls III's bleeding sun screenshots speak for themselves and Uncharted 4 is more of the same, but bigger and better.
This guy called the Hololens live demo an "after effects demo"?
I can't really agree with his confused beliefs.

i'm not denying that i'm just saying i want more space for new IPs to shine. companies don't release sequels just because they want to make great, fun games, they do it because they're piss easy to market as well
so true about the pipboy
Lots of crap comes with games. I think that's one of the coolest bits of collector merch I've seen.
Maybe E3 is just one big commercial platform for companies to advertise their games, but it's still fun just soaking up the atmosphere of everyone excited for new installments of their favorite games, and seeing what's in store for the next year or so. I don't really agree with a lot of the points in the video, and I feel like he's just being way too cynical.
