Wow I didn't realise how angry some people got at her kickstater. I had just thought people sent her some sexist messages and then everyone went on their way but ddosing her website, reporting her kickstarter as terrorism and hacking her email? Come on that's just pathetic. Even if these people were doing it because "she asked for money to buy video games" those attacks would still be way overboard.
what a surprise the comments got shut down
Theres no need for another youtube video to be flooded with stupid comments.
There are people who would create far more balanced and interesting insights into feminism and misogyny in video games and would far better use that money for creating a documentary with the same purpose. That's why it annoys me.
Then you can go fund that person if you want.
The video posted in the OP of this thread is pretty important because it shows how vitriolic the gaming community can be. Honestly at this point she doesn't even have to release tropes vs video games. She could take the money and run while still proving her point about how fucking awful people can be when their favorite form of interactive media is even threatened to be looked at in a critical way by a feminist.
except the "concern" being expressed most of the time forces people like me, who don't even agree with Anita's thesis or perspective, to cringe and say "omg stop being little shits about this woman"
I actually kind of feel like the relevance that is to her isn't her cause, which albeit noble (And I highly doubt there are many that seriously don't think misogyny in video games and video game communities doesn't exist), is more interesting in the way that she managed to raise that fuckload of money merely due to the intense backlash and media frenzy that went on after her Kickstarter campaign, well, started. I wouldn't go as far to say that it was deliberate, I don't think she's that smart to have seen that coming, but it serves as an example on how viral hate is within the internet. It's seriously a damn interesting case to study, alongside others like Rebecca Black and Scumbag Steve. People are just so damn vocal about what they hate within the internet its stunning, it transcends the barriers of what is seen in other media.
There are people who would create far more balanced and interesting insights into feminism and misogyny in video games and would far better use that money for creating a documentary with the same purpose. That's why it annoys me.
Then they should start Kickstarters and get their message out. Sarkeesian didn't fly past her campaign asking price for no reason. They did it because people saw value in her work. I didn't fund and have no interest in kickstarting anything really but clearly a lot of people disagree with your assertion.
Well that's why arguing about kickstarters is ridiculous in the first place, especially ones that ended successfully months ago. I'm also not arguing that she is the most qualified for the job but a lot of other people do and that ship has sailed already. She didn't do anything special, there was nothing lucky about it; she put up a kickstarter, told people of her plan, backed it up with reference material from her youtube channel, and met a great reception. Did people fund it to feel good about themselves without actually researching it? Yeah, probably. That happens with any crowdsourcing though. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] Also I never argued that if there are better people why aren't they as popular, just that she is popular. And the ironic thing is, she gained the vast majority of her appeal after being assaulted by a tidal wave of hatred over the internet for what was an insightful at best, harmless at worst project.
I wouldn't call it "harmless at worst". It has the potential to seriously discredit genuine feminist theory in favor of what I would call the "feminism-lite" that she uses.
Someone noted it last page but a feminist making mediocre videos about gender roles in video games probably won't affect something as large as "feminist theory".
And it's ironic that her own logic as a sex-negative feminist
what's your proof for this
Remember when guys and girls used to shut up and just play video games? I don't.
I wouldn't call it "harmless at worst". It has the potential to seriously discredit genuine feminist theory in favor of what I would call the "feminism-lite" that she uses.
pfffah i think you massively overstate anita's importance in feminist discourse
Of course not, but it will influence the general view that gamers have about feminism within video games since relatively little has hit the mainstream on the topic.
I don't think it's actually possible for the video games community to hate feminism any more than it does now. Have you seen some of the shit thrown around? It's p bad. Makes me embarrassed to call myself a gamer.
pfffah i think you massively overstate anita's importance in feminist discourse
She's not an important feminist, but she has managed to grab a position where the gaming community is paying attention to her. Having her be the de-facto 'voice of feminism' to gamers isn't exactly ideal considering the gaming community is mostly ignorant of feminism.
I have an admirer! Too bad it's thisispain...
haha! nice dude! now follow up with more boner jokes and you'll enter the fp hall of comedy fame [editline]6th December 2012[/editline] can i send you a list of celebs and have you let me know if you find them cute because its very interesting and everyone cares
You should be embarrassed to even call yourself a gamer in the first place it's such a dumb term
Great now I feel terrible.
There was. http://www.indiegogo.com/misandryinvideogames
Well shit, there goes my idea. But the best thing is these guys used the spare money and put it to charity. You guys should really give a look through their page, interesting stuff, their hate mail is pretty great, and they seem like cool guys.
considering the gaming community is mostly ignorant of feminism.
In which case any feminist criticizing video games' portrayal of women overall would probably be met with the same level of "criticism". [editline]5th December 2012[/editline]
There was. http://www.indiegogo.com/misandryinvideogames
This is a good project. I was at the store once just picking up some milk and eggs when a woman asked me to grab something for her on the top shelf. The nerve! What does she think, that I'm Nathan Drake, and just love to climb everywhere? The video game versions of men are seriously damaging society.
Feminism should not even be directed at video games, the entire thing is asinine
a+ post. great content with lots of supporting arguments and evidence.
a+ post. great content with lots of supporting arguments and evidence.
Oh I forgot I'm on the most liberal forum on the net. (User was banned for this post ("Why reply" - MaxOfS2D))
Oh I forgot I'm on the most liberal forum on the net.
being a conservative(?) doesn't give you a free pass to post white noise
What made me pissed was when she made a bayonetta 2 video admitting she never even played the game. She later took down the video because she realized that people would be able to use that against her.
Oh I forgot I'm on the most liberal forum on the net.
What has this got to do with anything, even if if twas true (it isn't)
In which case any feminist criticizing video games' portrayal of women overall would probably be met with the same level of "criticism".
First off, stop dismissing the criticism of Sarkesian's work by lumping it in with the vitriol thrown at her. I don't like how she was treated either and it makes it so people like me who legitimately disagree with her are assumed to be sexist and can't say anything without being dismissed as supporting mysoginy in games. I don't think this would have happened to feminist who criticised games' portrayal of women. She got so much hate initially (before the trolls rushed in) because she presented her kickstarter as though games only had offensive portrayals of women, outright says any strong woman in games is just copying men, and treats character traits as inherantly bad, such as saying needing to rescue a woman is always sexist. Someone who presented a feminist view on games without hating games as a medium (just look at the revulsion on her face when she talks about them) and is actually willing to do research, analyse actions and intent, and engage the community would haverecieved much less vitriol than Sarkesian did. It doesn't help that she manipulated traffic to her Kickstarter video by blocking comments on every other videos she's made and the fact that gaming 'journalists' went out of their way to paint her as a victimised hero standing up for oppressed women everywhere while at the same time slandering any legitimate complaints about her work.
Oh I forgot I'm on the most liberal forum on the net.
did you have that post planned out for whoever called you out? cuz i didnt even critique your opinion, just the fact that you called feminism asinine without even elaborating on why.
I feel like people lump anyone who disagrees with Anita as a bigot, and I hate that.
i dont particularly like anita sarkeesian, but the abuse thrown at her for simply being a woman reviewing video games is absolutely intolerable and shows the depths of misogyny in video game communities.
Most people don't hate her because they are misogynist. They hate her because she talks through her ass, labels anyone who is against her as misogynist and worst of all is giving a bad name to feminism. She obviously doesn't even realize pro sex feminism is a thing and is using feminism as a way to get fame while contributing nothing to it.
tits or gtfo
First off, stop dismissing the criticism of Sarkesian's work by lumping it in with the vitriol thrown at her.
I never did this, in fact I have criticised her methods in another thread, are you thinking of someone else :v:?
It doesn't help that she manipulated traffic to her Kickstarter video by blocking comments on every other videos she's made and the fact that gaming 'journalists' went out of their way to paint her as a victimised hero standing up for oppressed women everywhere while at the same time slandering any legitimate complaints about her work.
I can't speak to specifics but it was probably less a conspiracy theory to control the conversation on on a youtube video and more because any attempt at a reasonable comment was pushed aside by crushing hatred. Hero? No, probably not. Victimized? Harshly so.
