It was pretty cool.
[sp]The twist ending was that humans were engineered by the higher race to see what a species who's driving factors were survival and war would do. The higher level universe was very peaceful and the aliens hadn't even invented the concept of weapons so once humans got out they wrecked face[/sp]
I think a better ending would be
[sp]humans escape their simulation prison and overcome their creators, but then at the end of it all they realise the higher universe was also a simulation[/sp]
There's also the one about the aliens who see humans on Earth from thousands of lightyears away and see all the war and bullshit going on and launch a huge relativistic kill missile to destroy the planet, but by the time it arrives humans have spread out across the entire solar system and evolved into a posthuman/post-scarcity civilization and the weapon destroys Earth and pisses them the Hell off, so at the end of the story the aliens get a single transmission from the solar system that says 'We will find you.'
That one is probably my favourite one.
If we actually do find an end to pi though, I would be incredibly happy.
Not about the simulation, mind you, but I could finally rest in peace knowing that I could calculate circles exactly.

Man that could be the premise for one of the coolest slasher films of all time.
Quality Vsauce video as always.
Zombii/Empty_Shadow, do you think you could find these stories somewhere? I would love to read them.
Never heard of the hypothesis regarding natural selection of universes before
If an end were to be found, or a point where it repeats, it can be expressed as a fraction.
Except that, as Helix Snake says, it has been proven that pi is irrational. You don't need to write out every digit to do that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that_%CF%80_is_irrational
The proofs are not terribly simple, but they are there, they have been checked, and there are several of them.
You have that backwards. If a number currently believed to be rational was found to have an end or a repeating pattern, then it would actually be rational and could be expressed as a fraction, or a ratio.
What? A number currently believed to be rational is actually rational? But anyway, Helix Snake is right. It has been proven that any number with a terminating or repeating decimal expansion is rational. Pi has been proven to be irrational (see above), therefore pi does not have a terminating or repeating decimal expansion.
it's not really provable, what if we haven't calculated enough digits of pi yet? if we find an end point/repeating point we would be able to express it as a fraction and so it would be rational
It is provable though. See above. You don't need to find every digit of a number to prove that it is irrational. I could prove the square root of 2 is irrational right now without writing the whole thing out (it's much easier than pi).
So in a sense the book Contact took place inside a simulation.
I programmed life it was me
I programmed life it was me
Give me cheat codes.
"Things that make you go hmmm"
Pi is the universes phone number. It's just taking us a really long time to dial it.
Yes, this was a good thing to watch right before going to bed.
I'm sure I won't start thinking about this and ruining my sleep!

Lurking 4chan and related sites. Occasionally /tg/ has threads called HFY or Humanity Fuck Yeah which is basically where people write and dump (usually) scifi stories where the twist is humans are the big bad scary thing rather than a creepy alien race. Sometimes humans are the smartest race and save the universe, sometimes we're the most physically capable and destroy them in hand to hand combat (in one humorous one I remember, all alien life evolves on planets with 5% or less gravity than earth, and the last remaining human is insanely strong relative to the other aliens and is actually immune to their weaponry)
Basically most scifi (and fantasy) puts humans dead smack bang in the average middle section, we're not the smartest, strongest or anything like that, but in HFY it's flipped around and is kinda neat (although sometimes it gets a bit wanky, there's a lot of junk but you can find gems)
4chan is actually full of really neat stuff if you look past /b/ and /v/
It has an origami section for fucks sake (which contained for a while a 5 year old thread)
theres also a subreddit for HFY, http://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/

Here's the /tg/ stories that are relevant
I accidentally put some others but can't be bothered to fix it because I don't know how imgur works, so you also get an angry carpenter

god that shit is so cringey
I read a short pasta on /tg/ the other day where our universe was a simulation and eventually we figured it out.
And then we hacked the simulations computers from the inside out, got access to their 'internet', found their matter fabricators and fabricated a human in the real universe and overthrew our creators.
Does anyone have a link to this story? I'd really like to read it!
