The majority of it is really good and the stuff that isn't is still ridiculous over the top 40k action.
no, i honestly wouldn't say the majority is really good
but there ARE really good stories and novels, and there are many of them

thankfully, the events that surround this fan work can be summed up in a rather simple way:
-in the year 30 000, God-Emperor makes Space Marines to conquer the galaxy for mankind, creates 20 demigod super space marine "sons" to lead 20 legions
-humanity dominates the stars, Emperor names the greatest one of the demigods as his surrogate "Warmaster" and retreats to Earth to prepare his next project
-due to some conspiracy trickery and daddy issues the Warmaster falls to the demonic influence of Chaos, the eldritch powers of Hell - Warmaster turns against the Emperor, half of the Space Marine legions follow him
-the Ultramarines (blue dudes in the video) are the biggest loyalist legion and need to be taken out of the fight early, so two of the most dickheaded and aggressive traitor legions launch a massive scale surprise assault on the Ultramarines' corner of the galaxy
cue millions of dead, planets destroyed and apocalyptic fratricide, and of course lots of heroism and manly grunting
I mean you're both right and wrong.
There's more Chapters than you can shake a spoon at, so while you'll generally see Salamanders or Ultramarines protecting civvies and being careful around them, you're just as likely to see Iron Hands pressgang 1/10th of a planet into servitude to replace the servitors they lost defending it.
Bottom line is that 40k is big enough to be inconsistent on most things.
Well we're talking specifically about the UM chapter during the Horus Heresy, so he's pretty fuckin' wrong.

Graham Mcneill and Dan Abnett both got some real solid WH40k books if you want to start getting into the lore. Dan Abnett has issues with forgetting he's kill characters off, who then reappear in the next book, but Gaunts Ghost is a great series and the latest book (The Warmaster) finally came out.
You can also watch Text to Speech, I've actually used it as a great jumping off point for friends who are now massive fans.

The best thing to do once you've learned the most absolutely basic stuff is to find something in the lore, like a faction, that really speaks to you (for me it was the Imperial Guard and Orks) and just absolutely bore down into it, learning everything you can and reading the books that are out there.
Don't think you have to learn every single legion/chapter and primarch, every shred of bullshit going on with the Eldar/Necron backstories, or anything like that. 40k is a living organism and more expansive than any other scifi universe I know of, you can get lost in one side of it without even knowing the other exists.
I can't get over how fucking rad the melee combat in this is.
I can't get over how fucking rad the melee combat in this is.
the best thing is that the Marines are actually agile and fast like they should be, their speed in melee hasn't really been portrayed accurately before
even in the Dawn of War cinematics they were always more on the "big heavy and clumsy" side of things, while in-lore seeing them fight in close combat is said to induce terror because their movements are unnaturally fast
Video of the creator talking about stuff, it gives some nice insight and background that's worth a watch!

Juicy! Do you have an example, I thought I had read most his stuff but I dont think I've seen that happen.
