I absolutely loved the Questionable Ethics maps. Especially when you get the Tau cannon. Also the lasers. The lasers were awesome. Basically all the small details they threw in.
The BMS team deserve a good award and should be hired by valve for their efforts, and this totally replaces Half Life source, fuck this should of BEEN half life source. The mod's amazing, it feels like half life should, its brutal, its gorgeous and it makes sure you have one terrifying experience in the heart of Black Mesa. The whole thing is just perfect, and I love how everything plays out better than Half Life. And please don't defend Half Life like "omfg its still good", at the time it was way ahead of itself in terms of graphics and gameplay but nowadays we look back on it and its clunky and just shit. The storyline is there but the presentation is bad, however we play it for memory sake because that was the thing that made valve get so popular. Honestly got to give them credit, it feels like a genuine valve game, that says something.

no sorry I should or worded it better, what I meant is people saying omfg its still good because of the graphics and stuff. It's still a great game, it'll always be great but this is better

The graphics held up better than a lot of other games from that year, too.
I'm having a hard time deciding what gameplay is better and I will probably declare it a draw
i would say BMS has better gameplay, simply because the mechanics of Half-Life lie in the way the player interacts with the world. this is why Half-Life 2 is way more unique and interesting in its gameplay than Half-Life. BMS's physics and interaction are simply more modern and not constricted by the limits and weight of the Quake engine.
it's like on a rail doesn't exist in BM and i am perfectly fine with that FUCK on a rail.
i liked on a rail
One great thing it's done for me is really up the feeling of "Oh shit, shit's gone down and I don't want these guys to die". One great thing that Half Life 1 did for me, and I'm saying this as someone who first played Half Life 1 last year and never grew up with it, was that it did actually make me want to keep the random scientists and guards alive. This one, on the other hand, makes you really feel bad when they die, and you genuinely want to stop the random guys from dying in their scripted events, even though you know you can't. That's a great step in immersion for me.

As much as I love BM, I will always prefer Half life 1 and goldsrc gun mechanics over source mechanics. Gun play in the source engine is something I've always considered its failing, there's just no weight behind it, and its not interesting. I don't know how to describe it, but it just felt better in goldsrc to me.
i actually think it's the sound. Half-Life's gunsounds are incredibly loud.
i liked on a rail
Pretty sure I got lost for several hours playing on a rail. I was actually dreading it in BMS. I'm on the level right now where you actually power up the tram. I've gotten over my fear of headcrabs, zombies, and vortigaunts, but I still cry when I'm running from that Gargantuan.
God, that's absolutely beautiful.
I dont get immersed by glitching out on a ladder 50% of the time and falling to my death Also a some of the music was ear breakinly bad or unfitting (Blast Pit was probably the worst)
the only songs that really fit was, I think, 'we got hostiles' and 'surface tension 1'. The rest couldn't have broke the immersion more.
i honestly hated how the random scientists and most security guards in hl1 had little to no personality and it was just a slaughterhouse basically bms they give the guards and scientists who are scripted to die as you arrive in hl1 some sort of personality, and some even end up helping you out (IE Guard right before on a rail) you'd actually feel bad for killing them THAT is great immersion
The elevator scientist's "I dont want to die"
The elevator scientist's "I dont want to die"
And more importantly; they don't squeeze in a quick "Greetings!" when they zoom past you on their way down to death
To those who said the gunplay didn't feel very polished: I found it way more enjoyable than playing with HL2's guns. The shotgun actually retained it's amazing range from the original Half-Life, making it a joy to shoot with.
And more importantly; they don't squeeze in a quick "Greetings!" when they zoom past you on their way down to death
So rude.
I like the gunplay so far, only the smg is shit higher than a 0.02 meter range.
The only part I feel they really improved upon is the tram ride and the walking-through-the-place-to-get-to-the-test-chamber parts. THAT was amazing. Then when combat started happening and jumping puzzles got everywhere and stuff, it slowly started deflating. The visuals are still stunning and amazing, but the gameplay is just... I'm not sure, feels a little flatlining and dull. It captures the feel of a 1998 game remade on a 2007(? Not sure if that's the Source version used, disregard my idiocy if I'm wrong) engine released in 2012. Get the 2012 visuals, 2007 physics, and 1998 gameplay. But the gameplay just feels out of place. Half Life got away with primitive gameplay because it was, by current standards, a primitive game. Black Mesa is good, don't get me wrong. I still enjoyed it for the amazing eyecandy that it is. But if I wanna play through Half Life 1's story again one day, I think I'll fire up actual Half Life 1. Call it nostalgia if you will, but it just feels like a more complete experience to me. [sp]Oh, and no silly 50 round mag in the MP5? I'm mad.[/sp] [sp]And they forgot the front sight post on the MP5... That really bothered me when looking at it[/sp]
The elevator scientist's "I dont want to die"
That sort of thing always gets me in games. :(
The developers of this mod should really be contacted by Valve for job offers, this is easily the best looking and well put together source mod I have ever played. The only other mod I could say rivals Black-Mesa's mapping is Dear Esther, and it doesn't have half the shit going on at once that Black-Mesa does. I really never thought I'd see this mod released, and now that it has I can only give it praise. It's everything I expected it to be and more.
Office complexe was really beautifull and enjoyable to walk in. It really felt like a quiet and comfortable office. Heck, I'd like to work here ! I always loved office in video games and this one was really nice to explore and shoot headcrabs in.
i actually think it's the sound.
i liked on a rail
what the? you of all people liked to worst part of half-life? Anyway, it's not really fair to say this is better than half-life because 1) this is a remake; 2) it's a god damn remake; 3) 8 years in the making. I still haven't finished yet but i'm almost at the lambda complex, so far i had one crash in about 7 hours of gameplay (i think it has been 7 hours), no bugs, no glitches, at least not game breaking glitches, some minor design flaws that the average joe wouldn't notice, graphics don't make a game, but it helps, especially when you have physics, the devs would be fools if they had not included some valve style physics puzzle, especially in the laser mine area (although i think you could move the crate in hl1 as well? i can't even remember playing that area in HL1, been so long) The music was at times too loud and i couldn't hear important sound effects before an ambush like "Do it", and what's up with that every time there's soldiers i hear "Do it", maybe if i didn't hear this once every 15 minutes i wouldn't care. There's something else and i think i'm being too biased on this, the areas that i don't remember playing in the original are the ones i have more fun playing in BMS, so if just finished HL1 last week i probably wouldn't enjoy it as much If you haven't played half-life 1, you should just jump to BMS, overall it's a more modern experience and you'll have a further understanding of the half-life universe than just playing half-life 1, i know it sounds weird, but in my opinion this mod takes the throne on best remake ever made seriously it's the most polished mod I've ever seen, ever
Also klieners voice actor sounds just like him You can also imagine that with Eli but less cracking in his voice but holy shit what a surprise it was to see them
