What is with people always testing weapons against butted chainmaille? Riveted chainmaille would still have failed to protect the guy against the spike, but against the hammerside he would've gotten a quite different result. And you have to keep in mind the gambeson worn underneath the chainmaille would've absorbed quite alot of the hit too.
Truth be told, you're still being hit by a fucking long hammer. The reasoning behind these was to fuck with/cause concussions of heavily armored knights. That spiked bit is just used for the weak parts of armor. The hammer was most effective against the head, in which you didn't have (as big) of a mass of padding.
It's a lot more horrifying knowing a guy's going to give you a headache or fuck up your brain by bashing your one-impervious skull in with a hammer rather than just being the dude in the back with a crossbow. :v:

I know what it was used for (bashing heads) but it's still quite irritating to see people shove a knife or a piece of steel through butted chainmaille (And in most cases just galvanized steel too) and proudly proclaim they got something that "beats" their version of "historically accurate" chainmaille.
so...what's the point of this? who in their right mind buys a warhammer in this century, what possible purpose can it serve when there's way better ways to protect yourself

I'm sorry but
if you go after a bunch of guys with a fucking war hammer... they aren't going to talk to you anymore.

Wow, he sounds like the kinda guy who would shoot your ass full of holes if you accidently bumb into him on the street.
Not so badass anymore, more like a dumbass.

Ah, then twiddle me tips. I agree there.
The main issue with tests against chainmail is that they hang it and hit it from a near right angle, which negates a load of the protection. It looks pathetic against arrows and attacks when you hit it when it's secured, but if it's unsecured then it spreads the shock properly and actually protects.
They also sometimes hang it the wrong way, making it even less protected. It should fall and stack on itself, not be tightly braced in such a way that there's minimal overlap.
A warhammer genuinely does not give a shit and would punch through it, though. Warhammers and poleaxes were actually more favoured by knights than the sword, the sword was just a "knightly" weapon due to the fact that it was born as a dedicated weapon and was expensive, not a modified farming tool.
ya and if they have a gun?
Throw it. :v:
[editline]16th October 2012[/editline]

Ignore those pussy ass bullets, they genuinely will shit themselves.

[editline]16th October 2012[/editline]
no one talks to you anymore
Its weird how fictional hammers are so ridiculous and oversized that a real life one seems tiny.
Well at least real ones deal more damage, so I love my reality
son, that's nothing

That is fucking awesome
Just don't let the Soldier see that, he's liable to get jealous
What's the point of these? Are these weapons actually historically accurate or just sold for the "cool" factor?
Warhammers were cool hammers that combined spikes with hammers.
They also usually had a spike in the middle of it so they could stab frontally.
jesus christ that thing is fucking brutal
I think morning stars are the coolest.

Billhooks are pretty sweet too.
Knight giving you issues? Send him the bill.
And just like that I have lost my life-long love for swords in favour of the warhammer
WotR has a pretty good warhammer. you can even switch the grip from the blunt side to the piercing side
Warhammers? FUCK warhammers, its all about war axes.
you dont want that in your nogen

That is (was?) one badass buffalo.
There is a reason why the warhammer was a very popular weapon when dealing with armoured opponents back in medival times. Imagine a lightly armoued fighter with one of these versus a knight in platemail. The fight would be pretty much even just because of the warhammer.
