Traditional casino owners probably think that too
I've seen the idea of outright killing bots thrown around and I really hope they don't do it, there's legit sites that make use of them and it would suck to lose them.
I use TF2WH and stuff like that to get items I want because I don't want to spend a million hours trading with elitist assholes on trading sites to get items I want.
Couldn't they just you know, hire people to be in charge of all this? Have them check the sites that use the API, blacklist the ones that are gambling scams or whatever, and stuff like that. Iunno.
It'd be a start if they got a Community Manager that did something.

he has every right to be pissed, not to mention that PsiSyndicate only came clean because Ethan blew the whistle on their scheme in the first place
he basically even said "but i only made 3200 dollars so atleast im better than the others who made more :)"
The drops in csgo and dota2 have very clear features of the classic adiction reward design strategies how can you say this is not scummy as shit?
I was actually for a while last year pretty addicted with a few mates buying cases and keys and betting on csgo matches on csgolounge mostly putting stacks of shit on the team with the less percentage of bets since if they won the payout was massive and awarding
after your streak of successful bets you get cocky and then reality delightfully slaps you hard in the face, I could of saved that money for something nice, instead I betted on stupid matches
the problem is, is that it's so fucking easy to place bets, you just need a steamID and an inventory and your done. Doesn't even ask for your age, doesn't say anything about gambling responsibility nor can you find any information about gambling hotlines or whatever, just "hey come bet"
at least in Australia a lot of book keepers have taken in the e-sports scene with open arms and you can bet under full regulations on a lot of matches if you want to but the ultimate downside is that while it would be nice to win cold hard cash, valve with the help of youtubers and MLG stars have popularised skins to the peak, like owning a knife with a rare skin sits you on the row of kings in the realm of the game
it's so fucking bad and corrupt with nobody regulating it apart from valve and valve knows they can fucking clamp down on this but they're making too much money to see fit
[editline]6th July 2016[/editline]
like fuck, even before confirming a bet, it would be nice to have "are you sure? you should never bet what you can't afford to lose, if you think you have a gambling problem you can ring this hotline xxx" blah blah blah
So, BBC has started reporting on this.

Good, it makes it harder for it to be forgotten.
also stop fucking defending valve
first of all, no valve did not create or encourage for 3rd party betting or lottery systems to come out of skin purchasing, it was all about trade but people saw a bigger market in this with the skins system
HOWEVER Valve does put a pricetag on these items, the price tag being really the dispensing of skins and at the same time created an avenue for you to get these skins
you buy a key that grants you the ability to open a crate that has an item which is either super rare or shitty and you're more than likely to get the shitty skin
why? because it's a fucking slot machine, it has an algorithm and if today's the day then today's the day
there's no skill behind it, there's nothing preventing you from accessing this feature, and like shit will valve suggest you have a gambling addiction if you make over 5 key purchases in a sitting
each new campaign they release has a special case with special skins to go along with it and you only need to dispense $2.49 to access it
IT'S NOT DIFFERENT to having a slot machine that says "$2.49/spin to play me", this shit needs to be regulated and valve knew very well what they were doing
[editline]6th July 2016[/editline]
The UK's Gambling Commission told the BBC: "We are paying close attention to the growing popularity of virtual or in-game items (skins), which can be traded, sold or used as virtual currencies to gamble.
"If we suspect unlicensed gambling is taking place, we will write to the operator to inform them that they need a licence and will take further action if they do not stop."
you can literally hear the keyboards typing out of the United Kingdom's government office telling them to comply with regulations or they'll call their buddies in the states to give them a helping hand

This will become an issue in the media and culture here, but I fear that they will target kids for playing games more than they will for these goblins who prey on those who are illegally underage and participating.
Even those who are legally allowed to gamble, they are partaking in what would be deemed illegal gambling in every state and territory in Australia.
No doubt it will result on a broad spotlight placed on gaming with little specificity to this corner.
If anything comes from this, it will be a crackdown on tradable/exchangeable micro-transactions in Australia.

It is actually, it is clever grey area gambling because you are not directly gambling for money, pachinko is best thing to compare it instead of regular slot machine where your price is money.
Though Valve's little "crate pachinko" is more scummier/clever(depends on how you view it) considering they have monopoly on the market place.

That's this illegal here in NSW:
§4Definition of "money" in the act
"money" includes any valuable thing or any security for money.

§6 1B is designed or used for the purposes of gambling, or

i get that but in a sense, weapons are a currency
you could make a csgo betting site purely on sports events or hell even horse racing if you really wanted to and compete with the big book keepers
just by typing that, maybe the only way for anyone to do shit about it is if the big book keepers lobbied up and start arguing the whole "if they don't have to follow regulations, why should I?"
e-gambling and e-gaming is new and yes i also understand it takes a lot of time for legislators to get their heads around the concept and modernise the laws appropriately but for the mean time, valve has the ability to step in and say no more

Pachinko machines are the exact same as arcade games, but instead of tickets it's balls. In Japan you have to go to a 3rd party in another building to claim your "prizes" for valuable metals.
i miss the days where video games were just about videgames.
nowadays were seeing lots of shady shit going on in the background, and its sad that internet gambling isnt even the first type.

I don't recall any major uproars like this against CSGO and gambling, so I wouldn't doubt that Valve opted to turn a blind eye since the community seemed to be fine with it.
However, now that there's a big stink being made, it's likely Valve is preparing a response and a plan concerning all of this. With the industry this big and a spectacle being made, we'll likely be seeing more involvement from government agencies as well.
Considering how easy it is to turn rare valve-game items into cash, or steam wallet funds, their games are practically encouraging underage gambling.
Considering how easy it is to turn rare valve-game items into cash, or steam wallet funds, their games are practically encouraging underage gambling.
But steam wallet money is not actual money, and the other means to get irl dosh are 3rd party stuff.
One thing that I don't get in all these threads and stuff about the gambling and all that, why is it only valve that's getting shit for it (I mean the crates, not the gambling sites)? Sure they started it, but league, call of duty, smite, overwatch and a lot other games also offer RNG crates you have to spend money to open. Is it just because you can trade / sell them on the market?

It's interesting that this is a main news site article, this kind of shit is usually relegated to their NewsBeat section as it isn't deemed actually important enough most of the time.
But when billions of dollars are flowing, this is pretty fucking important.
But steam wallet money is not actual money, and the other means to get irl dosh are 3rd party stuff.
You can buy steam hardware with steambucks and then sell it, no third party required.

steam wallet money is, in many ways, actually money, considering you can get real things with it (like steam controllers) as well as videogames. none of those games you mentioned have any sort of gambling to them because theres no trading economy to any of those other games. those games have gotten a good amount of shit, especially cod, but those are small time compared to actual gambling rings that are the products of valves crates and market.
very glad people are starting to see that these dumbass videogame economies are glorified gambling, maybe things will get better now
i still think that csgo should still retain its betting economy and that betting/gambling remains however i want proper regulation implemented that abide by government regulation where there's protection and making sure that there's problem gambling help where people need it

Most of the trades happen over international borders though - there's very little in the way for a government to act on behalf of someone who is seeking damages.
You truly can't have your international cake and eat with a domestically coordinated fork.

thats true. however, with such an easy to abuse economy, its also very easy to take advantage of such a situation. you never see this type of thing with any other game that isnt a valve game. because of this economy they created, shitloads of matches have been ddos'ed for betting reasons. shitloads of gambling is going on.

if there was a way to geoblock and make a service exclusive to one country that'd work right?
i know you can bypass geoblocks but normally governments are satisified if one is implemented regardless

The fuck is happening to this poor game
Counter strike 1.6 was the first fps and the first game I've ever played on pc, and it really does make me sad that people who don't play this game only know it for gambling.
Some time ago I asked my friend what counter strike was all about, and he immediately brought up weapon skins and gambling. It's like the whole "team-based competitive action shooter" thing was like a dlc
