Edward's mentor could do it (she tried to transmute her dead baby), and when Alphonse has blood splashed on the mark that binds his soul to the armor in Brotherhood, he remembers his vision of Truth and learns to do it as well. Hohenheim has even more alchemy knowledge and can transmute just by touching.[/sp]
I'm going to honest, it's been years since I watched FMA and I hardly remember anything, just bits and pieces
Also Ed technically doesn't transmute without a circle, it's more that his hands function as the circle and his body/soul function as the symbols. Or some shit like that, it's been a while.
