I used to sorta worry that by the time I can afford a VR set to mess around in VRChat it would probably die, but now I worry that it'll turn into a fucking shithole by the time I get a VR set.

Well, considering VRChat's been around for a few years, this is probably just a hump/bubble of popularity and will die down when the next big thing comes around and VRChat will still go on like it has been. I wouldn't stress out too much about it.

You'll probably actually be better off by then, as they might work on optimization in that time.
i enjoy helping my vr friends make fancy avatars that they can use fully thanks to having vr, and then seeing them in action
i'm a desktop player, i just like talking with vr people and seeing how creative they can get with their avatars. it really sucks that i picked the game up at a bad time, because i just wanna have fun with the people in cyberspace, but now we got all these shitters that are indirectly making me look bad just because i can't afford vr
I don't wanna sound elitist here, but I don't understand why non-VR people use it. It's basically a worse secondlife.
Like, if you don't have VR, don't use it? It's just not fun if you're not immersed in it.

The point of SL is to merely be a social platform above all else. Effectively a 3D Message box. This takes that to a more extreme point I'd say. I'd say it does what SL set out to do in a more modern version.
Doing it outside of VR still accomplishes what it needs really.

I only played it because it looked insane, and it was.
I just barely installed this to help me get out of my shell and be more social. Just trying to learn about using custom models before I jump in.
Seeing this makes me think I should wait. I wanna have genuine interactions that end up being funny not this try hard bullshit.
(Love my VIVE)
VR Chat was the game that made me decided heck it I'm getting a VR headset because it looks like a chill place people hang out and the original funny stuff were creative like Chris Patstone's VR Puppeteer.
But now its a shitpost central with unoriginal dead memes. Hopefully the bubble would have started to die down when my kit finally arrives 2 week from now. Assuming Aramex isn't a piece of shit company like everyone says it is.

Its basically like sitting in a discord call but having something to do while you idly talk, i invite my non vr friends all the time if nothings going on
This game is the only game that makes me want to buy a VR headset and it is a chill place to come and hang out with people from around the world.
As for now, I'm still a non-VR user but I gotta admit, after a lot of streamers and YouTubers came in, it became a shitshow and I literally don't enjoy it anymore because of how there is so many trolls and "Uh look at me guys I have an anime skin and memes" type of players.
I was playing on my Vive the other day and there was this teapot man who was hitting on everyone in style of that "MAKE YOU SQUART ACROSS THE ROOM" video and it was hilarious. Got people to rub his spout and then just hot water would fly out. Gold can still happen.

idk, its a fun way to chill and hang out with randoms for a bit. It even got me looking to learn blender to make/import avatars for my friends and I.
But yeah, it gets really tiring seeing the same knuckles/communist tank every 2 minutes

I must be the old guard of SL. Because that's not what SL means to me. I make worlds in Second Life. I script games to play within it. Right now I'm working on a Newtonian flight system with similar mechanics to Elite Dangerous. VRChat is actually a 3D chat program and that's it's only purpose, unlike Second Life.
i actually ended up porting a wow model to vrchat because it seemed worth it
it was decently worth it
What I dislike the most are all the "best of" or "best compilations" channels that literally just rip off all the streamers/youtubers who make vrchat content. Most of the time it's just taking a bunch of twitch clips and showing them all together.
With the population of the game increasing 50% each week because of streamers and youtubers trying to hit the same kinda gold Jameskii did, I've been seeing waaaaay more assholes trying to be the next "hey lookit me i'm a funny dab guy with a craaaaazy avatar!"
I'm really hoping this sudden population bubble will pop soon, allowing for a normalized playerbase count and to allow the VRChat team enough time to improve their servers and moderation system in case the amount of players gets this high again in the future.
I never even see VR users anymore and whenever I play most of the people I see look at me and are like "oh you have VR"
If I have to see one more fucking Knuckles variant I swear to god
I really wish they'd allow the option for VR only worlds

Please, explain how I'm wrong. So far I've made about 350 bucks off of doing commissions and selling stuff on my marketplace. So if it's a chat program, it's a chat program that pays me to use it.
I do hope this bubble bursts. May the gold once again flow like honey!

Well I said I know what you meant because Second Life definitely can do more
But VR Chat is more than just chat in 3d and that's how you're wrong. It might not be much in comparison but VRchat still has bowling, sledding, amusement parks, other stuff to do than just sit and talk

I've made almost $200 off of vrchat avatar comissions and that's only for December.
VrChat is a blast if your a character designer

There's also a really well made bowling world, battle discs, CTF and a whole bunch of other gamemodes it's entirely up to the map designer.

...wait it's not actual garbage and is more than just a silly VR program? Ok now I'm interested.
Cause usally the stuff I see from VR is just actual garbage, 0-effort things, or "fantastic concept, shit execution".
I'd be a character designer on SL if the bento and base SL skeleton wasn't a nightmare to rig for. Does VRChat require black magic to rig?

You can use whatever skeleton you want, I was able to Port an antlion with all of its animations. You can use the animation override blueprint to define your own animation sets, as for humanoid biped rigging that works in vr your requirements are pelvis, spine, chest, neck and head in that order. Vrchat uses unity so you just plug the bones into the template and it works.
Source engine human skeletons for example, should work out of box and require no extra rigging or model editing.
As long as the joints are in a sensible human biped configuration it should work fine.

Also cloth is supported by default

Here's a character that doesn't have arms a neck or a head but I was still able to rig it up to the humanoid template by using the wings as arms and the eyes as the head.

(Yes it's very rough and has no UV map atm, test rigging was such a disaster I had to shelf the project)

He makes it sound really easy but be aware that you're going to run into quirks.
He makes it sound really easy but be aware that you're going to run into quirks.
Surely the quirks can't be as awful as Second Life's rigging process which involves praying to the dark gods and buying a addon for Blender beacuse dark magic isn't enough.

Probably not, but if you're someone like me who has zero experience with Unity and Blender like I do there is some shit that can trip you up.
For example, VRChat does not support the upper chest bone, I have no clue why, and it won't even let you upload an avatar if that bone is being used. No tutorial I watched ever mentioned this.

In your case your probably going to need to use a plantigrade leg setup and only one set of arms will probably function properly unless you make your own walking and idle animations incorperating them. (Or you can shell out $90 for finalik on the unity asset store to allow advanced in engine rigging.)
He makes it sound really easy but be aware that you're going to run into quirks.
Yes there will be quirks and hangups but nothing like the cryptic and in some cases completely indeciperable errors of the game engines of the previous decade. I could probably make 2 fully functional vrc avatars in the time it takes me to debug a single source engine model.
I'd only been a part of VRChat for a month or so before it blew up from the funi videos but boy the change is incredibly noticeable. So many folks pouring in who aren't aware of the culture. And others that just pick a tiny Knuckles and do the funny memery.
A KNUCKLES LIKE THAT FUNNY VIDEO I SAW! I CLAPPED, I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT!
