I really disagree with the fact that this looks like a CoD clone, or sub-par in any way in fact, so I took some notes while watching the video and plan to dispel any doubt on this being a fantastic game. First of all, I think the soundtrack is amazing, if you care to re-watch the video start at the crazed herbalist's lab, see how calm it is, almost if you feel comfortable around him, but still a little on the edge, I mean you've been thrown into this environment by a madman, how do you know who to trust? And even the combat on the ship, the music fits well. If you remember the cinematic trailer we can see that this is truly going to be a game based around plot, which for me is a big deal, I love a good story. When I play a game I try and look for the ones with cinematic sequences, fantastic voice acting, beautiful animations and even cutscenes (although they do frequently kill the mood for me when a game darts to third person). Continuing with the idea that this game will have a gripping plot, we can see that actually our first-person character seems to be well developed and actually quite charismatic, it's often very difficult to grow to like someone you can only see the hands of. On some more particular points, the game looks to be visually amazing. Not because it's filled with shaders and 2k textures but because of the crisp, clean but still well detailed art-style. This about how brown and angry other modern games can be. This is a lot calmer. On the subject of visuals, the scripted sequences look beautiful. The drug influence and the flying exploding lab both look spectacular. And on the exploding ship the dramatic music tied in with the vivid colours of the seawater and the alarm lights feels really atmospheric. Thinking about the gameplay. From that video, yes, the combat does look CoD-like, but as stated before this is only one person's playthrough. There will undoubtedly be other most stealthy ways to take down the small armies you fight. Also think about CoD for a moment, was there ever a section in that game where you slowed down to do anything other than follow a team-mate while sprinting through a burning building or shooting at angry Russians. No there wasn't. Looking at Far Cry 3 I've already seen a handful of slow parts in the game. Such as the caves with the mushrooms, or watching from afar with your binoculars to make sure everything is all right, or even the quiet conversation with the botanist. So to summarise. Immersive plot, too complicated to be CoD, more beautiful than you think, fitting music (however little you like the genre) and what seem to be compelling characters.
And designing an original hud takes a day or two at most.
Wrong. Holy shit so wrong you don't even know. A HUD is not a "day or two at most" kind of thing. HUDs are part of the UX of a game, it has to be tested, researched and carefully designed. You have to look at the game, think of a way to integrate it (hint: making parts hide just because they aren't doing anything isn't the optimal way, only in a few games), you have to see how the community reacts to the HUD, find out what they want in one. These steps alone can take months. You then have to find out what information has to be displayed, and where it makes sense to display it. This means more testing to see if something draws your attention enough, but doesn't distract you otherwise. Then comes the actual creation of final HUD assets and programming it more robustly to remove development crap. Again, this can take a few weeks or longer. No part of game development takes "a day or two", at least, if you're a even remotely decent game designer. Shit, all your criticisms in this thread have been horrendous. The trailer posted was probably played on a lower difficulty, as with basically all trailers. It stops the demo-er from dying and ruining the trailer, rather than having to cut between scenes of action where it would be obvious he died. It's to show off game-play mechanics, not show you how hard the fucking thing is. [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] The artstyle for the game actually makes me think of a first person Uncharted with how colourful it is. Even where it should be mostly one colour there is a lot of colour breaking it up and making it look really, really nice. The lighting seems spectacular, the effects look nice, and it doesn't sound too bad either.
This was an awesome trailer. Doesnt tell much about gameplay, since its CGI, but really tells much about characters and the concept Disregard the dubstep.
Holy fuck, I thought that was life-action at first, damn.
Looks like Call of Duty, oh god.
If you ask me it looks more like Rage. (With the obvious exception of the t@ckt1k00l AK) Is the soundtrack really going to be dubstep or is that the background music for the video?

It's not like it has dual holographic sights or an underbarrel sniper rifle or some ridiculous shit along those lines.

It's generally a bad idea to try and get through to him. [editline]18th February 2012[/editline]
Why is having a rail mount on an AK considered tactic00l? This looks awesome in my opinion.
Fucking gun sounds, is it really so hard to go out and record some gun sounds? Like, seriously, it sounds like a pellet gun for fuckkkkkksssss saaaakkkkeeeeeeeeeeeeee

And the FC3 colt sounded like the FC2 desert eagle.

This actually looks really good.
The gameplay looks really CODy. The first 2 farcrys required some manner of stealth/tactics. That gameplay just looks like "you are invincible and the ai cant aim! blow up everything! guns! bullets! hurp!"
easy mode, plus you'll get to choose what way to attack. if it's anything similar to FC2 there will be weapons allowing for run n gun approach, stealth approach, explode everything approach.

If there's no point in staying safe and away from combat as much as possible then why do it ? [editline]19th February 2012[/editline]
Is this on Low settings or did FC2 really look this shitty?
I don't think the guy is playing in the highest settings, and the image quality is deteriorated by youtube processing and all that. I'm playing the game in maximum settings and it's fairly good looking. It's not crysis but it's still really good.

That's kinda what freedom is about, you know.
Uh, you know, when playing games, you don't do everything you do only because you absolutely have to. That's kinda what freedom is about, you know.
Yeah, but at this point it's pretty much just added challenge. It's not as fun to do something in a restricted way if the game doesn't directly reward you for doing so.
plenty of games have stealth and recharging health don't say you run and gunned through human revolution
Human Revolution harshly punished you if you started mindlessly gunning down everything. Your health did regen up to a certain point (for maximum health you still had to use items), but it depleted extremely fast too, hence the presence of an actual life bar. Regardless of the difficulty you were playing in, enemies would still kill you in a maximum of 5/6 shots. A shotgun shot to the face kills you instantly even in easy setting.
that's why you just play this on hard it's not that difficult of an idea to process

It's just hidden because they can use screen effects to convey the idea of "HIDE YOU FUCKING IDIOT YOU'RE GOING TO DIE" without the user having to obsess over a meter or number. Health regen doesn't make a game easier or remove your options by punishing you for picking the wrong one for your playstyle. Shit game development does. The reason health regen makes CoD easy is because the game isn't really built around the idea of health regen, the enemies and levels still play out like something that would use a point based health system. Deus Ex: Human Revolution on the other hand has gameplay mechanics built around the health regen. The developers knew that hunting for health packs is dire and so, so boring. But the options are to stick more in the game, saturating the player inventory with them if they are good. Or adding a very unforgiving health regen that takes a while to kick in a max out. With enemies doing as much damage as they do it works. It's not the mechanic that's broken. It's the developers. [editline]19th February 2012[/editline] Actually, why the fuck am I arguing with you. you've proven time and time again you have the mental capacity of a 5 year old over most subjects.
I think it looks pretty damn good, but I'm just hoping it explains in the story how some guy goes from an island tourist to a FULLY SKILLED MARINE/RAMBO character (like in the CG trailer) also looking at that CG trailer, why the hell don't these game companies make full-length movies? I mean seriously.
Is this on Low settings or did FC2 really look this shitty?
I think it is on lower settings because I've been playing it lately and it still looks really good imo.
It's funny how they make a Colt pistol sound like it has a silencer on it.
You know that all games with health regen have a life bar too right? It's just hidden because they can use screen effects to convey the idea of "HIDE YOU FUCKING IDIOT YOU'RE GOING TO DIE" without the user having to obsess over a meter or number.
Woah no shit, I totally thought the devs coded an entire simulation of the player's body to decide when he took too much bullets and has to die instead of simply adding a value that goes down when taking damage. More seriously, I know how a health system works in a game, and I'm just saying it doesn't make sense in Far Cry 3 to make your character magical and give him the ability to heal superfast with five seconds of cover, it doesn't go well with the idea of having to hide for your life and be smart in whatever you're doing, because you're all alone against an entire island infested with people who want to kill you.
And from what I can see the game looks bloody easy because bullets barely do any damage and enemies can't aim for shit. And before you claim that I am judging the game over some trailer footage, keep in mind that you are too.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution on the other hand has gameplay mechanics built around the health regen. The developers knew that hunting for health packs is dire and so, so boring.
A game like Far Cry 3 deserves a harsh health system and hard enemies, because it's what originally made the series (if you played the first game as CoD or Quake you'd get your ask kicked because enemies are in bigger number and better equipped than you). I'm not saying health regen shouldn't be there, I strongly agree that it's boring as shit and inconvenient to look, I'm just saying it should be thought further than "screen goes red when hit a lot, hide for 5 seconds and you're good to go". And once again, NO I didn't call the game a pile of shit and never said it was going to be bad. I just said that from what I was able to see so far I think there are too much elements that seem directly taken from other games, as if the devs merely took lines of codes from other titles and slapped them in their own games. Doesn't mean the game is going to be bloody awful, it's only my opinion and concerns about some beta footage of a game that will only be released in about a year.

I just noticed the weird grenade tossing somewhere near the end of the video. Looks like some weird-ass autoaim for grenades.
