Have there ever really been "hardcore" Mario players? The Mario franchise has always been incredibly popular and "casual". Super Mario Brothers for the NES has to be the most well-known games of all time.

It's been well known yes, but the only people who actually played it and beat it were the niche, hardcore gamers.

It's just using Mario as an example, it is Nintendo's icon and biggest franchise. More people know the Mario characters than the Star Fox or Zelda franchise for example.
The way the polygons were exposed and the music gave me a massive Legend of Zelda vibe.
