It's actually really sad how irresponsible people are. I'm from the area of Danzig, and it's like everyone over 30 years has witnessed at least one accident at heavy machinery because of the Danzig Shipyard which as you probably know gained a lot of fame during the 80's if you're into history. It generally was a pretty damn big deal, politically too. It's incredible how careless people are, even people who are schooled to work in the industry.
Really? What the fuck.. Surely the design of this thing needs to be looked at for safety
It's a machine, machines are only as safe as the person using them and to be honest there isn't much that can be done to make it any safer. If a machine grabs you like that, unless you are lucky a kill switch won't do much good because by the time you have a chance to hit it you are already dead. Yeah they could add guards to cover most of the moving parts but then it would be such a pain in the ass to mount and dismount work. Chances are any guards would end up being taken off anyways. It's like I said people get too comfortable around machines and then they get hurt, their should be a bit of fear when it comes to these machines because it will keep your mind on what "could" happen and how to avoid it.
ITT: everyone used a lathe
ITT: everyone used a lathe
It's a very common machine, on top of the fact that a lot of younger people are forced to get jobs in shops these days it wouldn't surprise me if 50% of facepunch has used a lathe.
It's crazy that it took them almost 20 seconds to turn the thing off. A $5 e-stop button would've probably been a smart investment.
it always take's someone getting hurt/almost hurt for them to even bother putting that stuff in sadly.
You say it like it 's a bad thing.
It can be, I know a couple guys my age (22) who have been trying to find work outside of machine shops and industrial jobs. They didn't really want to make a career out of it but now their only experience is in that field and finding a job outside of it is proving to be hard. They originally took the job because it was a guaranteed thing out of high school, but now that they have made a bit of money they want to move on.
We have Hass lathes in class they have a door so things like this cant happen.
We have Hass lathes in class they have a door so things like this cant happen.
I've never used a lathe with a door. How does it work? Wouldn't having all that stuff limit your freedom of movement a lot?
We have Hass lathes in class they have a door so things like this cant happen.
Are you thinking of a CNC machine? [editline]15th November 2013[/editline] Or is it one of those fancy automated lathes?
I remember in my highschool woodshop class, the teacher told us a lot of horror stories of what happens when you don't use a machine properly or void safety protocols. To this day I still won't use a table saw, I'd rather cut that shit by hand or use a bandsaw if possible. The lathe was pretty scary too, every time my chisel got a bit caught on the wood and didn't smoothly chip away at it, my heart skipped a beat. Oddly enough, I was the only one in that class that had the guts to use the router and was able to use it. Not once did I ever relax when using a machine or a tool but I always enjoyed it
Large power tools like this shit terrify me. A girl in my dad's old shop class got her ponytail stuck in a lathe and it fucking scalped her.

If you're okay with seeing morbid stuff, just google the words "indian girl threshing machine accident". Pictures are very NSFW, NSFL and for the sake of everyone here, I will not be linking to it here because it's fucking terrifying.
