Then why is this growing and becoming a more normal occurrence on certain campuses? We can't say this is both a big deal and also a naturally suicidal movement.
I haven't seen this on my campus, but there's something attractive about being involved with this movement, and until it's fairly addressed I'm not sure if it will stop.
I dunno, I do know that most students strongly dislike the BLM and radical feminist movements here. They get trashed pretty hard on the uni subreddit. Some are pissed because they had a movement before that was much more effective, (Society of Black Engineers comes to mind) but struggled getting membership and interest.
Its the general rule for college students, I think. Movements like this current BLM movement literally invite anyone to show up and march around and shout and make loud noises, where groups like our environmental club (fuckin seattle treehuggers), SoBE, and the main feminist group (name escapes me) do much more solid work that goes unnoticed and unattended.
That is why there is some level of truth to what BLM is for, even though everyone dislikes them.
A lot of black communities do not get paid attention to until they do things like riot. And then when they riot, they are hated for being chaotic. It sucks.

Its a tough situation. I had no idea what it was like to be part of a minority at all until I realized I'm more than a little bit homo. And even thats not nearly as bad, but I can see how small things get to you- gay being used as a title for something lesser is still something that sticks out.
took only one person attacking me when i was alone late at night (got called faggot, shoulder checked into puddle and thats about it lol) to realize that this sorta fucking sucks.
I don't know what the exact situation (or solution) is like, nor is my situation nearly the same in depth, but I understand the feeling now of needing to do something to draw attention to the problem. I just would hate to see that something harm others, invalidate the core of the movement, or push people further away.
As much as I am an advocate for the philosophy of building up instead of breaking down, sometimes you have to break down stuff before you can really build up. I've always been against excessively breaking things down, like the focus that Malcolm X first had when he advocated for change. (i.e. segregation, responding to hatred with whatever means possible, etc), but even then it's a lot of publicity - publicity that should inspire self-reflection of how we're totally neglecting minorities like black people. Is there a certain point that publicity does become bad publicity though? Is there a point where that publicity becomes so distracting that even the things they're advocating for become too obfuscated in their actions?

Good point, and one I hadn't fully considered. Its a question that we're going to have to wait to see the answer to, it seems. With luck, the amount of bad press may result in a reaction of good press back- either examples of local branches of BLM/feminist movements doing the right thing, or a leader of the movement able to bridge the gap rising.
hoping for the latter tbh
Oh look how surprising yet another bunch of college students at an extremely prestigious private college are so very oppressed.
