Think of Sagan like Jesus and Tyson like Paul. Sagan says some far out shit and Tyson translates for larger audiences.
The awesome thing about sagan is how easy he was to comprehend
why does he have to be old now I feel like it would be fun to have this guy talk to me about physics
[thumb]http://jasonirwin.ca/content/default/2009/11/globetrotters.png[/thumb] hell yes
Seriously you're probably one of 10 people that gives a crap about that.
Sure, it's great that he's getting people interested. Am I not allowed to not like him? All I said was I don't understand why everyone finds him so interesting. It's not like I don't think it's a good thing. [editline]14th November 2012[/editline] Yeah, he really doesn't need an interpreter
if sagan didn't need interpreting then tyson wouldn't need to encourage people to be interested in science there is no such thing as perfect eloquence. One way of speaking will connect with a certain audience and wash over another just as another way of speaking will do the same. tyson is a lot more personable than sagan was, in that you feel like he's talking specifically to you when he speaks because of the sporadic nature of his lectures. sagan was a lot more intellectual and carefully weighed and planned every word he spoke, which made him a tad less charismatic. And even if Sagan was measurably better than Tyson in every way, that doesn't change the fact that he's dead. You can't advocate science or communicate with the public from the grave, so in the end we do need Tyson quite a lot.
if sagan didn't need interpreting then tyson wouldn't need to encourage people to be interested in science
I think that's more an issue of needing exposure rather than interpretation.
there is no such thing as perfect eloquence. (See previous quote)
Tyson is more down to earth when it comes to the "cynical" general populace of today, sagan died a while ago; and if tyson is here to continue the legacy and introduce more people; why complain?
Tyson is more down to earth when it comes to the "cynical" general populace of today, sagan died a while ago; and if tyson is here to continue the legacy and introduce more people; why complain?
I'm not complaining, I just don't see anything special about Tyson that makes him click with so many people. I think Kaku is just as enthusiastic a speaker, and explains things in a very easily understood way. I think Hawking has a great sense of humor. Cox, although I don't really like him too much as a speaker, is very knowledgeable. And Bill Nye is Bill-fucking-Nye.
Except not really because like I said, he doesn't have the same eloquence Carl did.
I don't get that feeling from him. I definitely feel the same general love of science and such, but he seems like a different personality to me. However, I only discovered both about a year or two ago, so maybe it's just that I'm not as familiar with Sagan so I don't see it. I do, however, love them both because you can tell they really enjoy what they do and they try hard to get their viewers to as well.
One more to add to the pile of intellectual thinkers and idea spreaders is never bad; if you only like one or two; fine. But in my book even if I don't like someone as much as someone else when it comes to their way of explaining things; I am still glad they are there to explain it at all.
So many semicolooonssss
he is more grammar
So many semicolooonssss
Just the way I imagine myself speak and divide my thoughts. Periods are too much and commas are too little, fuk gramar
I'll certainly say this about Tyson: one of my favorite Symphony of Science songs is mostly him. :v:

That's why people love him.

Not to say he isn't a good speaker and great at doing what he does, but I personally don't think I'd be quite as interested in everything he said if I didn't think of him as this generation's Sagan. I just think it's cool that there's someone carrying on Sagan's "legacy", and Tyson is a great icon for those of us who feel a little sad or cheated that Carl died at something of a younger-than-normal age.

I've been thinking, "I found Sagan before Tyson, it's really not hard to learn about him even though he's dead." But I'd forgotten it took another living scientist to get me into it first.
What a terrible person to try to be like.
He has a point, if true it completely contradicts what he's saying in the video. Everyone can continue to shower him in dumb ratings though, the circle jerk on this forum is no different in scope or content than Reddit.
I'd kill to have the vocabulary and articulation Neil deGrasse Tyson has. I'd kill to have the vocabulary and articulation of Carl Sagan, too.
