Like someone said earlier, I think some will jump on the immortality train and grow tired of it. Even if you explore the universe and have seen/done everything on Earth, I think you'd get quite bored after awhile. The sense of accomplishment would be lost.
Genetics are far from the only factor in those things. Metabolism, fitness, intelligence, all of those depend heavily on proper maintenance to function. Genetics only puts limitations on it and control the rate at which it can evolve. Engineering would only put people on an equal footing, people would still need to work hard at it to excel.
That's true. We don't really know much about this just yet so who knows how far we can take it, maybe there will be some laws of physics that'll hinder making us too good at one point.
The only reason lazy lifestyles are bad are because of the consequences of those things. If you remove the consequence of being lazy, what's the issue?
Physically, there would be none. Mentally sounds like a whole different thing however. A lot of people already suffer from existential crisis' every now and then, we kinda do lack a purpose. We don't need to survive anymore, we can just go to the store and buy food. If we're in a too poor shape to make money (both mentally or physically), then welfare money got our back. It might not be a luxurious living, but we will make it. Society won't just let us die from starvation or any other natural causes that would otherwise kill us in nature. So what do we do to feel good? We give ourselves a purpose, something we can master and feel progression in. Through hard work, we get something that we can be proud about and ultimately, we raise our quality of life by a significant amount. I fear that designer babies might just completely remove this through the examples earlier. Things will become too effortless for us to really put any hard work into things which in turn removes any sense of progression. It wouldn't be the end of the human race if this happened but I wouldn't be surprised if the percentage of people who end up depressed rises dramatically.

The exponential growth of technology and biomedical science is baffling, the next 10 years are going to be amazing
It's amazing that technology is reaching the point where the hypotheticals and the ethical debacles are now actually becoming relevant. We say 50 years like that's some far off date, but that's pretty much in our lifetimes. It's not even just human genetic modification, but things like strong AI and neural interfaces. What humanity will look like in 2070 is going to be so ridiculous that it's hard to even imagine.

im somewhat bothered by the possibility that the generation of humans alive right now will be the last ones in existence to suffer from various horrible diseases that in 200 years will be seen on the same level as polio
Real shame we'll live to see h+ but not actually be h+. Unless they master Mind uploading that lets you swap bodies in the future, that is.
Real shame we'll live to see h+ but not actually be h+.
Millennials will most certainly be able to be H+, its the Boomers and Gen X'ers that'll probably be too late to take part in H+.
Yeah, alot of these things will work retroactive as all the cells in your body replace them self in the years(except brain cells). That is how it would work if they figure out the cure to my disease(Becker Muscular Dstrophy), they are already working on fixing the worse type of my disease(Duchenne) through 2 stages. And those stages go from Duchenne -> Becker -> no muscular dystrophy. Modern day is amazing, alot of things just seem like sci-fi if you go back 40 years. Imagine in another 40 years.
Not to mention your perception of time would be fucked by the time you're 100 anyhow. http://www.maximiliankiener.com/digitalprojects/time/
There's no reason this can't be changed either. There are people with perfect memories, everyone could have that gene and also have perfect memories. When you're balls deep into genetic modification there's practically no limit if they have full control over the brain.
Real shame we'll live to see h+ but not actually be h+. It could be entirely genetic engineering-based. It could be the merging of man and machine. It could be something we can't currently fathom. The real hurdle to surpass in reaching that stage and reaching the singularity (an integral moment in reaching post-human) are the ethical questions that will be raised. We need to be willing to accept it otherwise it could be delayed for a long time. Most futurists believe the singularity could occur as early as somewhere near 2040-2050 which is what can be worrying given the general population's knowledge and disposition towards these concepts. Gen Z will be more accepting of it but there needs to be an overall acceptance that we need to attain in order for the post-human era to begin.

I hope I don't ever live past 80 or 90 years, IMO Life is amazing and beautiful because it is so fleeting which makes it that much more precious. Also the fact that I don't want to impose on my descendants, I'd rather them live the life of wonder and discovery than have to take care of my crotchety old self even if there was some sort of life extending device.

Living for an extremely long amount of time would depend on my quality of life. I wouldn't want to live forever as just a regular citizen with an average job and average income where I'd have to save for 30 years to go on trips to space and all that other cool future shit. But if I had a magically successful life with a business and wealth and position of power I could see how it would be advantageous and exciting to extend your life and get to enjoy all the future stuff. Like, for an Elon Musk type person it would make sense where you would be able to have an active roll in creating the future for centuries, rather than just being a spectator. Then again, that kind of life extension treatment would probably only be available to the super rich anyway, so I don't think an average person would have to worry about it.

All of this incredible technology will come decades before the average person will ever be able to use it. What's the point of living forever if you're stuck going to work from 9 till 5 every day? The fact that we'll never be around to see a truly utopian society where nobody has to work is really sad.
Not to mention your perception of time would be fucked by the time you're 100 anyhow. http://www.maximiliankiener.com/digitalprojects/time/
Ha! Joke's on you, I'm on a phone! Eternal life for me, woo!
I'mma work my ass off, save up, gimmie myself some cool genes and no aging, then learn survival 101 and go off to wander whatever and wherever. That's how I want to spend my eternity.
Eh, having a huge lifespan would make it so your average Joe could say "Ya know what? Fuck it. I'm taking a year off to go backpacking around the world". But just being able to live til 300 years old doesn't mean normal shit can't kill you. Imagine the news in the future: "Man Killed by Car Accident Only Minutes After Leaving Clinic" would suck dick.
i can't wait to become a horrifying immortal genemodded cyborg
i was gonna put "hey maybe we can make cute anime girls with this" but then i realized in real life that would look horrifying :disgust:
i was gonna put "hey maybe we can make cute anime girls with this" but then i realized in real life that would look horrifying :disgust:
can't have sex with a 2d plane, sorry friend.
Can't wait until we can engineer a baby with the Optiman genetic cut and we will have a race of "benevolent" but sterile superbeings with the potential to live forever with the proper enzyme adjustments, and a race of cyborgs will try to create a fertile Optiman to challenge their oppressive regime. The future is gonna be Frank Herbert as fuck. Or maybe Ethan Hawke will just get really good at swimming and become an astronaut.

and then we were the elves [editline]10th August 2016[/editline] can't wait for that upstart race of primates to call us out on our hubris
