As well as Hollow Knight and LISA: The Painful.
Night in the Woods too [editline]27th July 2017[/editline]
Shit like this doesn't surprise me one fucking bit. I've completely given up on anything Kickstarter related. Kickstarter is for idiots.
I'm sorry man, but you're full of shit. You need a little more optimism, there are plenty of amazing examples of great usage of the kickstarter platform out there.
Not a video game, but there is a nice boardgame cafe near me that was kickstarted.
I actually got my physical box the other day too. I would post a new thread for this but I don't think the video is good enough and it'll be weird having two videos on the same subject.
Being a long time Mega Man fan, I was upset that I didn't have any disposable income to drop on this kickstarter project. Now I couldn't be happier that I'm a poor fuck. Jesus Christ..
Whats the dealio with this game
Whats the dealio with this game
It's shit
Whats the dealio with this game
It'll make you cry like an anime fan on prom night.
As someone who might day one be a solo / indie dev (I'm getting there I guess), things like these are way I'm thinking of avoiding kickstarter no matter what. Whatever about owing professional investors or others in the industry that know the risks of you failing... I think I could possibly handle that (but obviously I would hope I'd never let that happen). But failing what are ordinary consumers, many of which simply don't understand what they're really doing? Or having situations like this happen where a game blows massively out of proportion, and you owe people to get those features done and don't have the choice in the matter of taking them out even if it'd allow you to make a better game? I don't think that's a guilt I could possibly take.
As well as Hollow Knight and LISA: The Painful.
And the Skullgirls DLC, a fighting game called Yatagarasu, and Wasteland 2
Didn't Arin Hanson (A megaman superfan) also dump a lot into MN9?
[t]http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/126/216/4c5.png[/t] Oh, just a bit...
[t]http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/126/216/4c5.png[/t] Oh, just a bit...
I don't expect you to give me the full story, but has Arin said anything about the game since this? I used to watch game grumps and I'm interested to know if he shits on it or if he keeps his mouth shut out of respect.
The boxes were only meant to be display pieces, but they don't even look nice. There was supposed to be a choice between a NES themed one and a Famicom themed one. I was supposed to get both, plus the art book, but I didn't check my old email until now and missed the deadline to confirm to Fangamer my address, so I guess I'm fucked.
I'm sorry man, but you're full of shit. You need a little more optimism, there are plenty of amazing examples of great usage of the kickstarter platform out there.
If you'd been bitten in the ass by developers you thought were reputable straight-up running away with all the money you gave them, you'd be saying the same fucking thing.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/q8ilDNh.png[/t]
how insanely embarrassing that it says "face in the game!!" I forgot about that [editline]27th July 2017[/editline] its exactly like a really shittily translated japanese shirt that says "crap your hands" the devs are definitely crapping their hands
Whats the dealio with this game
Keiji Inafune, the "father of Mega Man" (really he didn't even draw Mega Man personally, and was just an artist until Mega Man 3, and only really became the series-wide producer with the PS1 era) goes on Kickstarter to get the Mega Man fans to fund Mighty No. 9, seeing as the series had been dead for a few years after Capcom shuttled every project in development. People back it wildly to the point of critical acclaim and success as a kickstarter. Then it turned out that not only was Comcept, the "supposed" developers, really just an ideas guy group for the most part, but the actual devs between them and Inti Creates were mostly a crew of new and aspiring workers in the games development industry who were unfamiliar with a western engine like Unreal Engine 3. Questionable choices get made. They hire Dinah, who made a really bad interpretation of the game's protagonist as a female before getting hired to be the backer forum community manager as she utterly killed the forums. They get high-budget voice actors left and right but apparently no voice direction, as the final product shows. They started a second kickstarter for Red Ash (literally not-Mega Man Legends) and an accompanying prequel anime to it while developing MN9. They issue a cartoon for MN9 to be made, which has disappeared since. The game keeps getting delayed, with one of their excuses being that the devs were having trouble with the online mode which ends up being unstable and basically had no one really playing it even at launch anyway. Then they got Deep Silver to do publishing for them not long after (which seemed to of delayed the game yet again), who made ads for the game independently of Comcept/Inti. Thus the infamous line, "Make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night," among numerous other unfunny jokes that don't even fit with the game at all. And once the game finally, actually came out, it was an unrefined, mediocre Mega Man wannabe with clumsy stage design and mechanics, promised features like transformations per-power up from absorbing smaller enemies were completely ditched due to budget constraints (they didn't actually use all those 4 million kickstarter dollars on the project itself), terrible graphics and horrible optimization to the point that the PC version has an unfixed memory leak and the Wii U version basically crashes whenever it wants, and a lot of missing backer rewards and so forth to the point that they basically gave up silently on the promised VITA and 3DS versions. So many corners were cut that they don't even animate the mouths of characters in cutscenes, resulting in everyone just standing there in looping idle poses, combined with a terrible english dub. One of the community managers on the US side of things said, "Well, it's better than nothing," and Keiji Inafune himself basically asked for people to affix him with the blame for all the problems that occurred, which will probably ruin his reputation and any future attempts he wants at reviving Mega Man in any way for the rest of his life.
It'll make you cry like an anime fan on prom night.
That line still amuses me what the hell idea did they have that they should use it, where did they even come up with it lmao [editline]27th July 2017[/editline] like what INSPIRED them to insult their audiance
That line still amuses me what the hell idea did they have that they should use it, where did they even come up with it lmao [editline]27th July 2017[/editline] like what INSPIRED them to insult their audiance
Especially considering they had kickstarted an anime spinoff of Mighty No. 9!!
Still waiting myself. [editline]26th July 2017[/editline]
250?! Holy shit, I feel for ya..
undertale was a kickstarter project too
Exactly, see how that turned out?
One of the community managers on the US side of things said, "Well, it's better than nothing"
That was Brian Ashcraft who uttered that now infamous line by the way; he's also a senior editor for Kotaku. Goes without saying he doesn't have a single shred of integrity in him.
I really, really hope Bloodstained and Shenmue 3 don't turn out like this shit.
Well Bloodstained revealed days ago that they fired Inti Creates from development, who were apparently working on a mini-game rather than main game content. Except this happened a while ago and they just didn't bother to inform anyone until recently, and their own info and slides from before made out Inti to be part of the main development.
Shit like this doesn't surprise me one fucking bit. I've completely given up on anything Kickstarter related. Kickstarter is for idiots.
The only idiot move is people giving other people exorbitant amounts money, sight unseen, and that is hardly a problem isolated to Kickstarter. For example I paid $20 for the next Font Awesome through Kickstarter because 1) it's $20 and 2) Font Awesome is a thing that's been around 4 version beforehands, and it wasn't a risky buy.
Especially considering they had kickstarted an anime spinoff of Mighty No. 9!!
Oh Jesus Christ I had forgotten they started three other Kickstarters before MN9 was even released. [editline]27th July 2017[/editline]
Exactly, see how that turned out?
A game that delivered on what it promised and was good enough to create a quite large cult following for it on the internet? Yeah I did see how that turned out. It's not a bad Kickstarter just because the Undertale fanbase ended up being annoying.
Exactly, see how that turned out?
The game turned out fine tho, one of the better games of 2015. The obnoxious fanbase=/=the game itself.
Still waiting myself. [editline]26th July 2017[/editline]
Same here. It's the only thing redeemable from this shitshow: the artwork. I never installed the game. I saw ProJared go mad playing it (30mins was the max he could play due to the game causing memory leaks and literally breaking his setup. Like sound would skip, cam desync and overheating. He had to restart his PC every session).
That was Brian Ashcraft who uttered that now infamous line by the way; he's also a senior editor for Kotaku. Goes without saying he doesn't have a single shred of integrity in him.
Nah, that was Ben Judd (can't remember what his official job title is, he basically sets up Kickstarters for Japanese companies) who said the "better than nothing" line. I think it was said during the launch stream. I actually forgot how long this shitshow has been going on. I can't believe its been two years since I made this video. I remember browsing the backer forums at the height of the controversy. Dina would be posting in threads about puppies or some shit while locking or ignoring threads with questions or concerns regarding the shitstorm going on. There was definitely some people being outright ridiculous about the whole thing (Dina was never going to inject the game with misandrist ideals, she had no power over the dev team), but the people with reasonable concerns were also being ignored or silenced. I feel like all she had to do was come out and say "I recognize you aren't happy with what I'm doing, what can I do to improve?", but the more she and the other mods tried to cover up the worse it got. Her worst offense was simply having no interest in being apart of or understanding the community she was put in charge of.
Nah, that was Ben Judd (can't remember what his official job title is, he basically sets up Kickstarters for Japanese companies) who said the "better than nothing" line. I remember that TV Tropes initially listed it was Ashcraft for some reason.
Well Bloodstained revealed days ago that they fired Inti Creates from development, who were apparently working on a mini-game rather than main game content. Except this happened a while ago and they just didn't bother to inform anyone until recently, and their own info and slides from before made out Inti to be part of the main development.
So they're doing the same damn thing as MN9: use one set of staff to gain people's trust, then throw the actual product to inexperienced devs. Monobit and DICO seem to have only made 2D mobile games before. That explains why graphically the game looks like ass, if nothing else. Mirroring 2D Castlevania movement and animation-wise in 3D was probably a poor choice too, it's functionally the same but makes things look kind of slow and floaty when transferred 1:1 to 3D.
Just as a small update on the instruction manual not fitting in the box, I got this email:
Hi! If you’re reading this, we shipped you a Japanese Mighty No. 9 instruction manual that was printed at the wrong size and, as a result, doesn’t fit into the Japanese box. We’re reprinting the manuals at the correct size, and as soon as they arrive we’ll be shipping you a corrected manual. No action is required on your part. We apologize for the mistake; if you have any other questions about your physical backer rewards, e-mail orders@fangamer.com. Thanks, Fangamer
Well that's good I guess?

I guess I can add yet another game to the "shit I've backed that will never come out/be terrible when it does" list.
