the constant cuts from the gameplay is a little bit concerning as well, since they're obviously not confident in showing more than small 3 second clips edited together.
i agree with the rest of your post but this is just silly - that's how you edit trailers. most cuts in movie and game trailers last literally a second or less. even slow sections of trailers tend to have really short shots, they just use fading and slower music to make the pacing seem slower

One of the first things we were taught when I studied audio and video was how to pace shots
most shots in anything, movies, music, and game trailers last like 5 seconds tops
on the topic of the trailer: i dislike this kind of anti-cod stuff. while it has its niche market in making itself deliberately irrelevant.... it's still gonna be an irrelevant game. these type of "retro throwback! hardcore pc market! no bullshit" stuff dies out months after release. even tribes, which was surprisingly successful especially in circles like facepunch, died pretty fast. these type of games also get ripped to shreds by gaming communities because they're hard as fuck to balance properly. you can get one tiny thing wrong with the player controller or some maths in the weapon balancing and people will brand it as "broken" and "unbalanced". basically the only way to surefire make one of these games perfect for everyone is just to make a clone of ut99... and what's the point in that?
and while i totally understand the sentiment of wanting a game that is a throwback to our older "hardcore pc shooter" days, i dislike the "wow f2p knife kills cover systems regen health classes levels wow such gay noob stuff ruining our games" sentiment. games are different now or, more specifically, the people who play them now are different. that stuff is popular because it levels the playing field and makes competitive fps gameplay more accessible for everyone. ut99 stuff is never gonna be mainstream anymore because half of the video game market potential is people in full-time jobs, older people, and women - people who are either new to games or don't have the time to learn the nuances of a hardcore pc shooter where half the server they're playing on has sunk 200hrs into learning how to rocket jump
while i agree that the perks/classes/levelling stuff in games has gone way too far with a lot of franchises, cod4 was and still is an almost perfect example of accessible, fun, competitive, balanced, fps multiplayer that is fun for everyone. if you think it's a game that takes 'no skill' then i don't know what planet you're on. in 99% of games the most skilled player is going to be the winner, it's just a game that is constructed in a way that even the shittiest player will find a way to get a few kills and that's great
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
i mean why not just put all your effort into something that is actually original? the way to 'save' pc gaming and fps games n shit is just to make something new that's really interesting and cool. 1999 isn't going to save 2014 pc shooters. look at sub rosa or due process - those are games that proper pc gamer people could really get behind and find depth in. i know those aren't the same type of games in terms of pacing to this thing but they're just examples of new formulas that haven't really been explored
basically when i watch that trailer part of me just thinks "some really talented artists and programmers put at least year of their lives(?) into remaking ut99 wow what a waste"
Why did they try to make it look like Halo
Because Halo had fun multiplayer and they want to appeal to those who liked that.
stuff
I agree with your points (except that competitive games should sacrifice depth for accessibility) but I feel that tribes ascend died more due to bad management than gameplay choices.
the Tribes community has been increasingly upset with the developers, Hi-Rez Studios. As Hi-Rez continues to make questionable decisions, neglect important bugs, blatant misbehavior of community managers without reprimand,[20] and prioritize their newer game SMITE, the community has dwindled. This is attributed to the lack of updates ,[21][22] hotfixes and tournaments and because of increasingly common issues with the servers[23]
I mean they said straight out they're not going to update the game any more and deleted their forums. Meanwhile, we have quake live which although is pretty much a straight copy of Q3A is carrying on fine.
I fail to see how this UT clone will be relevant once the real thing releases.
Well, there's always the case that it'll be good enough to sustain the audience. If a game's good, people will play it.

i said why it has gone that way but i didn't necessarily say they should do it. in fact i said a lot of devs have gone way too far with it. it's an interesting trend anyways
I just hope it allows for custom maps and allows modding for custom gamemodes.
It does apparently. They have an FAQ on their site.

my bad. still, the surprising amount of hype over this shows how much some people want a halo-esque arena shooter on the pc :v: (or halo)
If you like this game go play Unreal. It's the same thing. The 2004 one that is.
For fucks sake this game has the Redeemer and Raptors from what I've seen.
A fuckton of distracting effects going on. I doubt being old school alone will be enough to keep it alive for long. Most games like that go deserted rather fast.
We believe that "classic Arena-FPS" and "Free-to-Play" (F2P) don't go well together. A true arena FPS requires all player characters to have equal stats and the availability of all weapons to everyone. Always! The skill of a player should be the only deciding factor about victory or defeat. Allowing players to buy different (i.e. better) weapons or to permanently boost their stats does totally contradict the idea of classic arena FPS gaming in our opinion.
They're also confusing PAY2WIN with F2P
I don't really understand the point of making this
It's either gonna be so similar to UT and no one will play it and just play UT instead, or it's going to be different enough that no one will play it because their target audience wants a game that's exactly like UT
Without leveling, or unlocks or any of the normal things of today, I don't think it will get much traction unless the game is near perfect.
I really only play BF4 to get unlocks, it's just the motivation to play. This game has to be brilliant for it to be the only motivation to play.
Pandering to hardcores and elitists is dumb because they'll always be the first to stab you in the back
Does it have bunny hopping?
there's something about those graphics I really really don't like
I can't put my finger on it
also very glad it's giving F2P the middle finger, thank god.

Basically this, look at Halo 1 for christ sakes.
Over a decade later and people still play that shit, just cause it's fun as hell
I'm a bit skeptical about this, feels like they're trying to get that old-school arena fps feeling polished enough for modern FPS player, and I feel like it has pretty big chances of failing horribly.
No levelling,9 weapons,(probably) no campaign....and paid. Unless it's 10$ I see this becoming a huge flop.
Oh man a modern video game that takes an edgy stance on modern necessary elements of video games??? There can never be enough of those!!
[editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
Remember when Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon made fun of takedown kills and platforming and then still made you do those things because you have to do those things for it to be a Far Cry video game
These guy suck at advertising. Why do they open to show off the features that they dont have. It's like saying "NO GAME SAVES" "NO ANTI ALIASING" "NO ONLINE INTERACTIVITY", I am really not impressed, they are just trying to jerk off the "90's gaming was better"-crowd. They are not very good at this advertising deal at all. They act like free to play is a bad thing. If handled well, F2P can be really good. (Look at DOTA 2 for example) If it's going to be as "bare bones" as they claim it to be and opt out of the free to play model I cant see this game getting very popular in the market of today.
"No Ironsights"
Why the hell is that a selling point?

"iron sights are dumb because back in doom there were no ironsights and ironsights makes me think of cowadoody and it makes me so mad!"

ironsights remove all skill from fpses!!
im not gonna say how tho
So is this going to die out as fast as that other anti-cod arena shooter from a year or two ago?
I can't remember its name, but all I remember is that you jumped around a lot, wore all white, and used an arm-cannon thing as a gun. There was like... one official tournament for it then it just disappeared.
I don't understand, isn't this literally just UT2k4
You could probably remake this trailer scene for scene in that game, it's identical. Every single selling point they listed was also a "feature" in UT2k4
Watch them try to sell this game for full standard video game price lol
Watch them try to sell this game for full standard video game price lol
"6 guns, 4 maps, $20 please"
I don't like the aesthetic of the game at all, it looks an ugly mashup of Halo and Tribes.
