For some reason they were redesigned to look more like Cronk from the Future series, which baffles me because that takes place in an entirely different galaxy. [t]http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/ratchet/images/9/98/Cronk.png/revision/latest?cb=20080807183958[/t]
and cronk is supposed to be old and obsolete too, right? [editline]14th April 2017[/editline]
As someone who has never finished a R&C game, besides 1-3, what are ones I should play, and avoid?
Honestly all the main series games are worth playing for the gameplay. it's all there, its mostly just the writing that has degraded.
It really didn't go "bad" until the weird attempts at 4 player co-op.
and cronk is supposed to be old and obsolete too, right?
yep! he was old before the original games even took place
As someone who has never finished a R&C game, besides 1-3, what are ones I should play, and avoid?
Deadlocked (Or Gladiator outside the US) is a little different from the main series in it's more focused around gunplay and less around platforming but is still really fun The Future series (Tools of Destruction, Quest For Booty, and A Crack in Time) are more story focused but are all fantastic, definitely play those All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault are completely different from the main series (All 4 One is a bizarre co-op mess and FFA is a weird tower defence thing), those you can probably pass on Into the Nexus is more like the original games than All 4 One and FFA, but is pretty short (I'm pretty sure I beat the whole thing in one sitting), but I think it's still worth a go because it's pretty fun.
Those dialogue cutscenes seem embarrassing to have come from a film. Everyone seems to have their feet planted to the ground. Never played Ratchet and Clank, but the guy makes a good case for how much of a step down the reboot is.
It really didn't go "bad" until the weird attempts at 4 player co-op.
Trust, but to fully answer Xonax's question, the ps3 titles worth checking out are; R&C collection; all ps2 games in 720p 60fps. Despite graphical glitches they are easily the best way to play these titles now. Something that the video didn't touch on is how R&C1s movement/gameplay is VERY dated but it's still worth checking out. Future: Tools of destruction Future: Quest for booty (short downloadable titles) Future: Crack in Time In To the Nexus (one off shorter story with questionable character designs but is very good) others to consider if you REALLY like the above; Full Frontal Assault (tower defense game that has likeable moments but isn't great) [editline]14th April 2017[/editline] whelp ninja'd
Fair warning if you are planning on playing RC 1, the game is brutally difficult and punishes you when you die. Controlls are really really wanky (there is no strafe, and there is a delay when you move around in first person plus you also stand completely still when in first person mode and cannot move whatsoever besides your aim.) combine that with enemies that shoot fast lasers at you and missiles at you while flying, its a pain. Checkpoints are non existant, you die you get put back at spawn and ALL enemies you killed get respawned, and maps are really long on some planets. This includes ridiculously hard parts too. You don't get your ammo refunded either, meaning you have to spend your bolts to purschase new ammo as well (some ammo types cost a lot, some are a bit cheaper). Camera is really weird too, as there is no proper strafe it wobbles around a bit. However, all these things are improved on significantly in the sequel going commando. This video portrays the first game as easy as the ps4 one is, but its not true and you will be frustrated at the games difficulty.
I will admit I was kinda blown away by the art and graphics because I hadn't played an R&C game in years but the over-the-top CGI, lackluster writing and everything else was a complete let down They should of just remastered the entire original game instead of changing parts of the story because their failed movie was gonna be released beside it
I didn't know why the original installment was considered such a classic but now I have a newfound appreciation for it. Great video!
I played the latest Ratchet and while changes like Ratchet's personality or the annoying over usage of dialogue annoyed me, the game itself was a fantastic platformer.
The best part of original R&C was how different the gameplay is. It's a breath of fresh air after you have played trough countless of the sequels, that all are quite similar. The best feature would be the fact that the weapons stay useful much longer, as enemies don't really gain health the same way they do in later titles. The more cartoony aesthetic gives it a lot of personality too, as the video mentioned.
I didn't know why the original installment was considered such a classic but now I have a newfound appreciation for it. Great video!
Remember that this came out on the PS2 very close to launch, back then platforming shooters weren't super well represented in the industry. Let alone ones that had such interesting worlds and characters. The game set a new standard for that style of game for a while. It did a lot for an early title, graphically it was pretty fucking neato and the score was pretty up there.
This was in my top 5 games of last year, and I'm not retroactively changing that. It was written very poorly, but while it's not the best R&C game ever it's still a very good game purely on the basis of very good gameplay. Oh and it looks very pretty if you care about that too. I suppose this was bound to happen, a sudden shift in opinion from "pretty fun" to "painfully mediocre", it's a relatively mixed game that is good but has a lot of baggage and doesn't quite live up to its predecessor.
I finally picked up the new R&C (plus a PS4) and I don't know if I can say it was as bad as TGB says, but it's certainly different. But I really like the improvements on just about everything else so I'm not sure I really care. It's disappointing to see how much as changed but at least they didn't neuter the gameplay too. (In my opinion, of course.) I did like the pacing of unlocking new equipment in the original, but that's my big complaint about gameplay so far.
Well I mean, when you bring 14 years of experience of making the same franchise and get to make a movie tie-in reboot personally rather than outsourcing it to someone that might not 'get it', the gameplay at the very least better damn well be refined.
