Maybe they put the consciousness of felons into robot bodies so they can actually live long enough to serve out "life sentences" or prison time exceeding one hundred years. Wouldn't that be shitty.
Perhaps that's the punishment for those felons as well? It would be pretty god damn horrifying to wake up as a robot one day.
I would like to know more whom made this made a canon to a story that i want to know

Anything masquerading as you is merely a copy. The only way I know that MIGHT work like you describe is slowly replacing chunks of the brain with exact cybernetic replicas one chunk at a time. Your consciousness is never interrupted, it merely loses access to part of its functionality for a time. It is like remodeling a home one room at a time instead of knocking the entire house down. By remodeling, it never stops being your home, even when the end result is something completely different. Though even this is questionable.
I do think only one word can explain this, amazing.

If we go by this idea then that means that every time you sleep you're dying and a copy is made from you when you wake up. It doesn't matter what is "original" and what is not, you are fucking you. If something is the exact "copy" of you, then you are it as well. Even if we were to go by this idiotic conundrum, it would only work on a technicality since that "copy" might as well be you.

Sci-fi license, dramatic effect/story first etc

We're still semi-conscious. If something is an exact copy then it's still a copy especially when it comes to the concept of an artificial brain. It's not your specific consciousness unless like he said we do it piece by piece but even then it would enter the realm of the Theseus paradox.
....you guys are ruining my immortal robo-body dreams..
....you guys are ruining my immortal robo-body dreams..
The thing is by the time we'd be able to do the impossible of transferring active consciousness we'd already have much better alternatives to enhance our brains and body overall. It's more likely nanotechnology would work better for augmentation of the brain and more than likely with less issues during/after the procedure than actually replacing sections or the whole thing.
Thing is, if you want to transfer brains, you gotta figure out all the shit that comes supporting them as well. Seems that artificial blood system that transfers nutrients and doesn't support microbiological life is the simplest (hello MGR:R) Then you have the problem of actually interfacing with the brain. Trying to catch patterns in the brain activity is a shit idea, it's inneficient and more or less gives only an idea of one task to be completed. Mapping all the nerve endings is the best procedure as it allows to use all capabilities that the nervous system develops to drive a body.
I can't believe this is running in real time, that's incredible
Pretty awesome. The wakeup sequence is very much reminiscent of SOMA.

Even when placed into a coma, knocked out, or asleep, you never actually have a skip in your consciousness. Your brain is always operating. Moreover, while alseep, your brain actually works harder. It has a lot of housekeeping to complete, like converting short term memory into long term memory. It doesn't feel this way because your brain needs to access your memory center while doing this, which makes also writing information to the memory center relatively difficult, so you recall very little of it. This is why it is difficult to remember dreams. Dreams are just your brain converting memories and the pattern recognition portion of the brain trying to make sense of a bunch of random memories suddenly flashing as your memory is converted. Anyhow, I'm going to clone you, give him all of your exact memories, and then shoot the original (you). No harm no foul, right?
I'm a bit late, but I noticed that the second robot, the one with the guy who disabled the screens reading off a felon code is the same robot as the prisoners. He has the same screen on his chest, albeit destroyed and partially covered with body armor. He has the same arm as well, if you look at his lower arm in one shot.
