To think there will be a C school for me to get an NEC to maintain and fire these things. I can't wait.
You'll still be in when they main-line these into the fleet? Wouldn't you be like a FC1 or Chief by the time the NEC opens up?
Am I the only person who thinks this will never shoot a missile out of the air? Even CIWS systems have to basically litter the air with rounds to hit one, why would a rail gun that fires 6-10 rounds per minute do it
You'll still be in when they main-line these into the fleet? It'll be broken up just like every other weapon system, FCs will get the FCS and GMs will get the weapon itself, same with 0979 gunners, we get the whole missile launcher, FCs get SPY/AEGIS/MK99 FCS. It's the same now with the zumwalt and her systems. Though depending on how long it is until they field this thing I may be retired, but paygrade won't stop me, you see E-6 - E-8 go thru C schools all the time.
Why are they shooting giant wrenches out of it?
Why are they shooting giant wrenches out of it?
They're throwing wrenches into the enemy's plans.
Why are they shooting giant wrenches out of it?
[t]http://www.ga.com/ResizeImage.aspx?img=/websites/ga/images/products/defense/railgun_systems/projectile.jpg&w=730[/t] Giant sabot filled wrenches.
Still, this is the thing that was fired straight level with the ground. And after it went through a thick steel plate, kept going for 7km before it hit the ground. I feel bad for anyone on the receiving end of it. I forgot how much kinetic energy it was.. Something like 33 cars travelling at 100 miles per hour
Why are they shooting giant wrenches out of it?
Incoming TF2 engineer update
Hate to be the unlucky bastard who gets his entire body ripped apart by this.
So does the projectile have no warhead? I really wanna see what kind of damage this thing can do.
Was it just me, or did he say in the video that it substitutes electromagnetic propulsion for gunpowder? That seems like the opposite of what it is.
Was it just me, or did he say in the video that it substitutes electromagnetic propulsion for gunpowder? That seems like the opposite of what it is.
Why do you think its the opposite??
Maybe my grasp of english is off, but I thought that would mean that it's powered by gunpowder.
Hey. I'm only an hour away from BAE.
Maybe my grasp of english is off, but I thought that would mean that it's powered by gunpowder.
Electromagnetically accelerated projectiles.
Still, this is the thing that was fired straight level with the ground. And after it went through a thick steel plate, kept going for 7km before it hit the ground.
Finally, this is the kind of shit I want to hear about.
Sadly? I think it's a good thing that we don't have to send railguns in to orbit.
Well I mean yeah, definitely, I just meant for cool purposes. "Railguns in space" :v:
Was it just me, or did he say in the video that it substitutes electromagnetic propulsion for gunpowder? That seems like the opposite of what it is.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they meant to put it the other way around. Or maybe we've been living in an incredible world of electromagnetic guns all those years without realizing, and now they finally invented a cannon that shoots gunpowder.
This. A rail-gun can hit it's target faster than a missile and is a lot cheaper in the long run. Cruise missiles usually cost $1 million+ per missile which can only be used once while a rail-gun can be reused and only needs ammo that costs way less than a missile.
Missiles are complicated things with mini computers, electronics, and wires. A Sabot is pretty much just a hunk of metal being propelled by Electromagnetism.
So does the projectile have no warhead? I really wanna see what kind of damage this thing can do.
a warhead would literally reduce the amount of damage this weapon could produce. at the speeds that it's travelling, any warhead would (if not vaporized/accidentally detonated upon firing due to shock heating/rail friction) probably detonate immediately on contact with the enemy vessel, rather than actually penetrating it. This weapon fires solid slugs of material (pointed and flat, one for penetration, the other for maximum release of kinetic energy upon impact). The first one would be used for surgical strikes or taking out specific subsystems of enemy ships (think firing directly through their command centers, drivetrain, ammo storage, or engines, then leaving a nice clean hole on the other side as it exits) and the second one used for area of effect/sheer destructive power. Assuming that the Navy/BAE reaches its approximated goals (50% of 32MJ of energy at the downrange target) then that is still 16MJ (roughly 4kg of tnt, although pure kinetic energy is going to be far more devastating than the energy released by an explosion of TNT due to a number of reasons) of kinetic energy being delivered to your target. That is going to vaporize anything small and leave a particularly massive hole in anything else. [editline]21st May 2015[/editline]
Missiles are complicated things with mini computers, electronics, and wires. These guns do fire sabot, but that's not what a sabot is.
Missiles are complicated things with mini computers, electronics, and wires. More complicated than a sabot, but still cheaper than a missile/JDAM
So is this really that much faster than usual altillery rounds/rockets?
I'd imagine that they would develop a GPS guided munition like the M982 Excalibur Artillery Round. Missiles can change course, so I suppose that to be able to take one down with a railgun you'd need the projectile to fragment. Can you imagine? Ships using railgun for long range engagement and lasers for short-range point-defense. The future is now.
It will be used to shoot down planes, attack hardened bunkers on land, shoot down incoming missiles and vaporize somalian pirate dinghys.
actually thats the laser's job [t]http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/d-brief/files/2014/02/militarylaser.jpg[/t] [editline]22nd May 2015[/editline] its kind of dumb they keep clipping the very first prototype video onto that, but at the end, that thing is pretty badass, and it looks like they are going to be able to integrate it into traditional shell types with it firing standard cylindrical-ish ammunition instead of the blocks of tungston that the original prototype did [editline]22nd May 2015[/editline]
Well I mean yeah, definitely, I just meant for cool purposes. "Railguns in space" :v:
the problem with space-railguns is all you have to do from space is drop something down the gravity well, railguns are totally impractical there, but still cool as hell and useful for ship based warfare on earth
