Also that article Dunkey showed which mentioned Darksouls 1 sold 2.3 million copies after 30 months made me realize that Cuphead, the game people keep randomly fuckin associating with Darksouls, has sold 10 times faster than Darksouls did lol (reached +2.3 million earlier this month, ~3 months post release). I mean yea sure it has the benefit of PC sales from launch which last I heard accounts for ~60% of the sales, but still, shits nuts.
So, Dark Souls is the cuphead of hardcore dungeon crawlers?
Of course it's amazing. Damn, all of my favorite games from the last two years [sp]DS3, Hollow Knight, Doom, Cuphead[/sp] are on here, guess it's a great time for video games.
Divinity:OS2 is incredible. I'm getting Furi tonight based on Dunkey's recommendation and that fuckin' awesome music snippet.
Me and my friends just abandoned our DnD campaign to play a four player co-op divinity 2 os run. No only is the music amazing but how chimes in during some of the boss fights is great. Like how it starts playing this when [sp]Hydra[/sp] pops up is amazing. Dunkey's right though about how much DS3 evolved compared to the first game and Demon's Souls. Those games did not age well at all if you try going back to them today. :v:
that men in black scene with the dark souls editing was scarily accurate
Dunkey's right though about how much DS3 evolved compared to the first game and Demon's Souls. Those games did not age well at all if you try going back to them today. :v:
It evolved backwards.
Actually, the best boss track is Bonus points for belonging to a buss that wasn't a yawning pit of endless frustration.
The Edge is kind of dull, though. A lot of people seem to rank him highly but going from The Burst to him feels like slowing down. You just time your parries and dodge the waves at the very end and that's it, that's the entire fight. I think I may have died once on my first attempt, but it went by so quickly that I'm genuinely not entirely certain. Gameplay-wise The Burst is probably my favorite, but I like the arena and design of The Line a lot. Can't name a particular favorite track because it's all so damn good.
The Edge is kind of dull, though. A lot of people seem to rank him highly but going from The Burst to him feels like slowing down.
yea the thing about Edge is you either struggled with parry's up to that point and will have a tough time with the boss, or you've got them down pat and you'll just bulldoze over him, because that's basically what the entire fight revolves around. I get the need to have a boss that fills that role of "the level that tests your parry skill" but yeah the result is he varies the most on peoples 'toughest bosses' lists. For me I think I beat that boss on like the 3 or 4th try, which was nothing compared to how LONG i spent on burst. So yea I didn't care much for him. also if any of you haven't played Furi since it was new you should absolutely load it up again to check out the new (free!) boss DLC that came out earlier in 2017, cause yea it's a pretty great addition (especially the [sp]second surprise boss which is basically just an endurance match from hell for all the people that think they've mastered this[/sp], which is exactly what the game was lacking)
also if any of you haven't played Furi since it was new you should absolutely load it up again to check out the new (free!) boss DLC that came out earlier in 2017, cause yea it's a pretty great addition (especially the [sp]second surprise boss which is basically just an endurance match from hell for all the people that think they've mastered this[/sp], which is exactly what the game was lacking)
i've known about the dlc for awhile and i'm pretty sure i already downloaded it last year on PSN but it got lost in my backlogitis somehow sometimes with games i'm really interested in playing i afford them this weird reverence where i want to wait for the """right""" moment to play them like a comfy uneventful evening where i'll enjoy it the most when i should really just fuckin do it

I played through Demon's Souls for the first time last year and it was an incredible experience.
I still haven't beat The Star's final phase. I can ace every other phase but that until it starts doing the sweeping beams
I still haven't beat The Star's final phase. I can ace every other phase but that until it starts doing the sweeping beams
Using the left shoulder/bumper to dodge instead of X/A helps a lot with that I've found. The delay isn't as bad and it's a lot easier to quickly switch between dodging and shooting the projectiles so you have a safe spot to dodge to.
+1 for Divinity: Original Sin 2 being amazing. It's incredibly free-form, gives you tons of options, and has lots of charm. You even get to pick an instrument to serve as your character's leitmotif, and it gets added to the background music
I still haven't beat The Star's final phase. I can ace every other phase but that until it starts doing the sweeping beams
You really have to get into the zone to beat it. Luckily, once the bullets stop coming you're basically done, so focus on just getting through it. That said, The Song is still one of my favorite bosses to fight simply because you can parry her divebombs.
For those considering Furi and Hollow Knight, and also have a Switch, don't forget that both games will be landing on said console soon enough. Heck, Furi hits the Switch in just a day from now (the 11th). Nothing like killing some bosses to Carpenter Brut while stuck on a smelly bus.
I hope this year is as eventful as last year for the videogame industry, the amount of amazing games that came out this year is just awesome. It's probably going to take me to the end of 2018 just to play everything good that came out this year. :v:

You deal so much damage to each other with each hit and he's the only boss I've seen that really feints at you, as well as having no bullet hell type sequences at all. I also appreciated how short his fight was after the Burst, which was really drawn out and a bit of a slog for me after failing once. The Scale, to me, was the moment when the game actually started being fun. The first three bosses are cool but on normal difficulty they aren't really a challenge. The Scale was the first time I felt like I could lose, and he has a nice mix of the different elements of the game tied together in a style I really enjoyed.

He also has a cool design, I liked the reference to Musashi Miyamoto, and his personality was quite chill and humble. I legitimately thought The Burst was one of the most frustrating bosses I've ever attempted in any video game, it's like the devs decided to put every single annoying boss trait they could think of all in one fight. I probably would have dropped the game entirely if she had come earlier and I wasn't as invested.

Furi's melee combat works for what it is, but it isn't exactly complex and basing the entire fight around it, as Postal says, leaves you in a position where it may almost feel redundant if you've already mastered the mechanic. I felt as though the bullet hell was the 'main' mechanic of the game and the swordfighting was sort of a bonus, I guess. The Burst runs around and tries cheap shots and generally puts you through the ringer, but I thought that was part of what made it engaging. She varies so wildly from phase to phase, she tries so much shit to put you in the ground and after you've made it through all of it and gotten past the desperation attack at the end with Carpenter Brut going full ham there's this satisfaction like "I fucking GOT you." The grueling, lengthy nature of the fight is part of what makes it so satisfying to beat as a boss fight.
That fucking bit where he compared CoD:WW2 to Doom with the weapon sound effects. That caught me off guard so badly.
I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned Prey yet, definitely one of the best games released in 2017 imo. Great soundtrack, great replayability because there are so many different ways to approach a situation. You could sneak past enemies, or go blazing in doom style with a shotgun. Find a keycard, or find another way through a vent or a maintenance shaft. It feels a lot like System Shock to me. It feels even more "System Shock-ie" than Bioshock. There's also a shitload of content in the game, at least 20-30 hours of content.
Only downside to Prey for me was the weak-ass ending.
Only downside to Prey for me was the weak-ass ending.
didn't have any issues with the ending. thought it was pretty awesome frankly
didn't have any issues with the ending. thought it was pretty awesome frankly
I dunno. [sp]Ending on a 20 second, genuinely ugly looking pre-rendered cutscene was super anticlimactic. And the post-credits scene was a neat /idea/, but was ultimately disappointing. The part where you were being experimented on to judge how trustworthy you are in helping against the typhon was neat, but it made me like the rest of the game less. The part that made Prey so engaging to me was the setting and how well realized it was. It felt like it was a real place where people lived out their lives, and they put so much detail into every corner of the world to reinforce that. It felt lived-in and believable. Turning around and going "It was all a simulation!" makes that feeling vanish into thin air for me. [/sp]
If Dunkey thinks 2017 was so great, why are half his GOTY picks from 2016? Is this a bit?
If Dunkey thinks 2017 was so great, why are half his GOTY picks from 2016? Is this a bit?
His GOTY lists are always games he played this year, not necessarily ones that came out this year.
If Dunkey thinks 2017 was so great, why are half his GOTY picks from 2016? Is this a bit?
Last year his #10 was fuckin Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He always does this.
Last year his #10 was fuckin Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He always does this.
I have a feeling he'd have put Sonic 2 up on the list if it weren't for [sp]Sonic Mania[/sp]
