It's really obvious what they do with the DLC operators, just like Riot with League. 2/3rds of the new guys you release are overtuned as shit, which drives sales of that $30 pass upward. Leave them overtuned as you balance inane bullshit (yeah, a 50 round 1080rpm smg is totally balanced now that it has 8% more recoil, in a game where if any one bullet hits your head, you're guaranteed dead ) while promising "balanse soon i promse!!!" for two seasons, before nuking them to the ground. This is, of course, to say nothing of the extremely predatory pricing policy of each pass, including the repeatedly stated intention to never reduce the price of any DLC operator, even years down the line. One can only imagine that early buyers who fell by the wayside will be left behind, having to either spend 2400 rainbow funbucks per past year pass, grind for "only" 25 hours per operator, or rebuy the complete edition on an entirely new account. Because while the complete edition does go on sale, you can't buy it if you already have the game, just like with the starter -> normal edition problem. And as far as I can remember, Ubisoft have never discounted the Year 1 Operator pack purchasable in-game. [editline]11th December 2017[/editline] I want to emphasize that 2nd paragraph a lot. Ubisoft's incompetence and/or intentional malice is such that if you ever dare fall behind on the year passes, those are your options, bar none. Either pay up big dollars for funbucks, grind your ass off, or rebuy the complete edition the next time it goes on a steep sale. [editline]11th December 2017[/editline] Or, what if you just don't buy the complete edition? What if you heed the advice to not buy the starter, but don't notice that there's no way to discountedly fast-track DLC operators in the normal edition? Fuck you, right? Can you imagine, at the start of "Year 3," the immense grind that unwitting newbies will face? Yeah great, they can get all of the base game operators quickly. But to a new player, uninformed about the history behind the DLC or whatever you want to call it, they'll suddenly hit a brick wall solved only via an intense grind, or opening their wallet, to unlock something that will no longer continue to distinguish itself from the base game. [editline]11th December 2017[/editline] Chances are, any player that says "pssht, 25K renown is EZPZ to get, that's literally free" is one of 3 things: 1) They're a player that has played from the very start of the game, before there were any big renown sinks, and accumulated huge amounts. 2) They're people who play the game 4 hours a day, rather than a "casual" 3) They're people who bought the operator(s) in question, and subconsciously feel their purchase becoming wasted if it was then devalued (this can be seen in people who bought Year 1 now that discussions are being raised about the Year 1 operator prices with the upcoming Year 3)
people who are using this video as "proof" that "siege is a shit game" are completely missing the fucking point
The Starter Edition is a scam. That shit needs to go. Otherwise, I think the game's content model is extremely fair. The base operators are solid, and you get enough renown from watching tutorial videos and playing the training scenarios that you can unlock eight or so before you even set a single foot in multiplayer. We're talking like an hour or two, here, and the training missions teach you useful stuff so you want to play them anyway. 25k for a DLC operator seems like a steep grind, but you have an entire season to build up the renown, and none of the people I play with have any issues getting the 50k renown neccesary to unlock the two new DLC operators right at the start of the season. In fact, you're likely to make enough that you can also buy a couple of cool weapon skins and uniforms along the way. For a new player, the giant roster seems intimidating, but realistically you're not going to play every operator. Most people gravitate to a handful that fit their style (or the ones deemed "OP"), and the rest gets unlocked eventually anyway. I've found Siege's DLC system to be so fair that I've resorted to buying some real money only skins every now and then just so I don't feel like a complete parasite. This game has brought me so much entertainment (despite the fact that I suck ass at it) that I see it more as a donation than anything. UPlay fucking sucks donkey dick, though.
