It sucks that if you try to use vocaloids to to English, it tends to sound awful or impossible to understand. I hear they're working on English versions though. I don't get why you can't just edit a human's voice instead of investing a ton of cash into a computer voice that probably costs a shit ton to develop.

The problem is that the only real applications are for entertainment and information. Also, the Gorillaz use this exact technology in some concerts.

That's exactly how it works. It's essentially a sampling of syllables from a real voice actor which are rearranged to make a word, and then pitch-corrected to fit the song.
I wonder how the musicians feel to be upstaged by a hologram.
