scarlet johansson really looks weird as the major
it's interesting how they took the geisha scene from the manga, iirc that wasn't in any of the movies/animes.
is that not exactly how SAC opens?
Really torn on this.
I've only seen the first movie but a lot of the changes seem to feel "WRONG" to me. Making the Major a unique frontrunner is the most glaring one, but even recreations of famous scenes (like the invisible rain fight) feel kind of off. I'm really not feeling Scarlett as Kusanagi, either - she looks all right but something in her delivery doesn't strike me the right way. Minor stuff like Batou's eyes or Togusa's age bother me as well but that feels more like nitpicking.
However everything that I don't recognize looks pretty darn fantastic. I'm a sucker for neon-noir cities and I love the way this futuristic city looks at night. The geisha scene (which is apparently from another GitS thing?) also looks really cool.
Like I said I still can't decide if I'm sold or not. I don't want to be that asshole contrarian who goes "the anime was better" but since I watched it dubbed I'm probably not at risk of being a weeaboo just yet. I guess it'll all come down to whether or not friends want to see it.
Also it does that stupid trailer trope where they sing a classic pop song in a slower, drearier tone (what, Depeche Mode wasn't already moody enough for you?).
[editline]13th November 2016[/editline]
Also I went to the movies yesterday, they did this weird thing where the "turn off your phones, keep track of your stuff, report suspicious people, walk to exits in an emergency" announcements kept glitching and warping, eventually cutting to a few seconds of the Major appearing in the rain and a GHOST IN THE SHELL title drop. Not the full trailer, though.
I thought it looked great. We won't really know until it's released though.
i feel like they've just made a superhero origin story out of gits.
I'm surprised no one has posted this yet.
I completely disagree, if only for the fact that the ghost in the shell manga is highly different from any of the animated adaptions. Each version has a different feel to it, the problem is not that it's not 1 to 1 adaption, it's that from what I've seen the changes really seriously miss the CORE aspects of what make gits good in the first place.
They seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on the Major being the first full body cyborg here for example, which is an incredibly American style sci-fi plot and exists in stark, completely inverted contrast to the character's existential crisis in the manga and 1995 film of being generic and replaceable.
Her entire personality is formed around being replaceable, being nothing special really, and until I see evidence otherwise, they've missed the mark and ended up on something far more generic and westernized.
I like the film and the tv anime equally, they are vastly different in tone and characterization, but they never lose that core gits feel, and I do not feel that in this trailer. It reminds me of Ghost in the Shell Arise, the most recent animated adaption of gits, which got the setting design and characters all close enough to be recognizable, but the feel was just slightly off the whole way through.
Now, this movie might be great, it might suck, trailers can't be used to judge a final movie. However, I am somewhat concerned going forward with what I see. The west can do solid cyberpunk, so maybe they can pull it off, maybe.
Cyberpunk is all about technology clashing with culture, natural normies vs. cybernetic toasters. Ghost in the Shell isn't cyberpunk, it's post cyberpunk. Technology is now an inseparable part of the human experience. Everyone is a toaster.
The Major exemplifies all of the existential questions that full and complete integration with technology brings. The series is about examining those questions. And I have yet to see anything to suggest that any of those themes will even be touched on in the movie.
At least it looks kinda pretty.
I don't like how she says "you should've built me better". In Ghost in the shell, they never refer to cyborgs like that. It's a prosthetic body. A cyborg referring to a body as "me" while also acknowledging it's a machine is like you referring to your car as if it was you. It's basically just a tool of transportation.
I think it was supposed to be sarcastic but it was just delivered badly.

Post cyberpunk is a reactionary genre set in scenarios where the technology is almost utopian in nature and the major conflicts are on a much larger scale.
GITS is almost an in-between of post and classic since it does cover the bigger political conflicts at times but still at its heart covers the protag's personal plight as well as those close to them IE Major's identity crisis which is usually a core element of cyberpunk.
I'm kind of baffled that people are interested purely based off the visuals. If the script isn't up to snuff then it's going to be a mess especially since this is supposedly a cyberpunk movie.

I think we're using slightly different definitions here.
What I mean is that Ghost in the Shell isn't about rejecting technology or accepting technology, it's about a world where technology has already been accepted and how we deal with the consequences.
The huge holograms are kinda dumb looking imo. Cool enough for one scene, but the third time they showed them I was like "yeah yeah I'm amazed ok"
yes i must agree.

Cyberpunk was never about rejecting or accepting though when it comes right down to it. Transhumanism and the like are merely one of the avenues it can go down but it's purely about utilization in the end. "The street finds its own uses for things"
For example Blade Runner has the core concepts of defining humanity, the struggle of identity and finding a place in a world that is overtly stacked against you. While it could be argued it's about accepting/rejecting replicants that's merely a surface narrative used to contain the detailed themes.
Which is why I'd say GITS is in between the two genres, which both have very distinct themes and both were created from very different ideas. It has elements of that utopian tech and larger conquests but still retains the very personal and individual focuses of cyberpunk.
You can have your grand technology and still retain a cyberpunk narrative as shown in Deus Ex and Altered Carbon.

I find it annoying when I hear covers of this song, because none of them ever really match the tone of the original.
On the topic of the trailer, Scarlet Johannson isn't my favorite actor. She just feels the same as always. The scenes they chose for the trailer didn't change my opinion, but I will remain cautiously optimistic.
Batou's eyes are so stupid looking and ScarJo as the major is too robotic even for the major. At least there was emotion in SAC here she's just so wooden
Also why the hell is Togusa like 50 in this.
Is it Togusa or action Aramaki?
That revolver wasn't a Mateba and if Togusa was straight up executing a dude then they killed his character completely
[editline]13th November 2016[/editline]
... Why does Batou have normal eyes at 1:50?
The only good thing about this will be remake of the soundtrack tbh
something about the sub-par cgi and the costumes makes this look like a low-budget fan film on youtube
honestly her invisibility cgi threw me pretty bad, it's been a long few years since I've seen cgi that poorly done, BUT the character design looks 10/10 all around to me
This looks like it'd be okay by itself but since they decided to stick the GitS label on it it's just gonna be disappointing.

If I remember correctly the first episode of the anime was based around geisha attacking diplomats.
Wasn't Edge Of Tomorrow also based on anime?
That was half decent unlike the dragon ball live action, which nobody remembers not even the creators.
Is it Togusa or action Aramaki?

it's aramaki. beat takeshi is playing aramaki.
This is gonna be another one of those movies that is half decent but you're unable to actually enjoy it because the director decided to make it their own adaptation instead of following the formula 1:1 and it'll be a frozen day in hell before purist fanboys let that slide.
Not likely. Every adaptation of GitS has been different and they're all very popular.
I suspect this will be shit for other reasons.
In my mind the major and batou will always be voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Richard Epcar respectively. Either those voice actors or ones that sound like them.
i predict it will be a 6.5/10, critics will hate it, heavy fans of the anime will hate it, light fans of the anime will say it's not too bad, normal moviegoers will think it's okay but kinda weird and the director will talk about how much of his vision was cut from the final product
It'll bomb or do below expected in western markets but make millions in the asian markets.
screenshot this so i can laugh at how wrong i am later
if it brings cyberpunk back to theaters ill buy a ticket
same for blade runner 2
the world needs more cyberpunk
What I never got about the end of the anime is how the hell did it make sense for [sp]the US to try to nuke japan.[/sp]
Guess I must have missed the memo somewhere.

They weren't nuking Japan, not really anyway. They were working with the administration to end the refugee "problem" by blowing up Dejima island. That's why they made such a big deal about the rebels having nuclear material instead of quietly having Section 9 or some other group retrieve the stolen nuclear material, so they could tell the world the rebels blew themselves up when the nuke hit.
And most importantly, Japan invented the nuclear miracle technology that basically negates radiation so there was no risk to mainland Japan.
