Fun fact: When the mongols invaded in 1274 and 1281 and failed because of the typhoon, this is where the origin of Kamikaze (Divine Wind 神風) lies, as the typhoon was seen as an act of Kami. They themselves, as suicide pilots, saw themselves in a similar light to those "divine winds" and adopted the name later on.

When I was in Japan, I went to the Yūshūkan which had a reconstructed Type 1 Kaiten (suicide sub) I didn't know at first was just looking at it idly and mentioned that there wasn't much room inside for pilots, then my friend said that it didn't matter as they wouldn't be coming back alive. Was pretty shocking just being next to something that people threw their lives away with.
