but the fact that people abused the bug in order to have psuedo-gay relationships (or just to mess around and have fun, which is also fair game) shows that there is a demographic that wants them, even in japan.
I don't disagree with the overall argument you're making, but I'd just like to make a correction here to something I see pop up a lot. I see the argument brought up often that the Japanese player base also wanted this feature for its inclusivity. Not really, however; these relationships were being created and screencapped in the game mostly as a joke. (And for the record, were not done by abusing the infamous corruption bug; people were simply making female Miis and making them look like guys to create "gay" relationships.) The term "homo" is often used in a derogatory or joking way, and that's what was going on here. The running online term for the fake gay relationships being created in the game was "HomoKore" (Homo Collection) and the Japanese internet largely found such screenshots funny rather than cool with many of them being the product of female players who are into 'yaoi' rather than actual homosexual players. (Such women are often referred to as 'fujoshi' in Japan.) When news of the infamous bug broke, jokes were tossed everywhere in the Japanese community about Nintendo getting in trouble with the law over the game (since gay marriage is illegal in Japan), the game being re-rated as R18+, and the dreams of 'fujoshi' coming true. There was never a Japanese outcry for the feature to become standard, other than as a joke. I've also read some reactions by Japanese netizens to the news of Nintendo of America apologizing about the issue, and most of them are confused as to why it's such a big deal. Basically, the entire issue is localized to the western world. Anyone bringing up HomoKore as evidence that it should've been in the game in the first place is misinformed on Japan's current cultural and legal standpoint on the issue. It's not Nintendo who's behind the times, it's Japan in general.
Can't quote because I'm on my phone, but the reason I dismiss "why can't we just videogames stop crying" opinions is because of their gross defeatist attitude that doesn't even attempt to come up with a solution. Like, its the same way in every thread. If social equality is not a priority for you in the media you consume, go away. Talking about it brings nothing but good.
Why should video games have social equality when its nothing but a form or art and entertainment? Why the fuck should it even be a priority? Hell thats the last shit id give a fuck about in a game because my prioritys are all the actual important shit, you know like gameplay, controls, optimization, level design, music, graphics, etc... Actually, social equality in video games is more detrimental than good, say every video game company put it as a prority, instead of more unique worlds and characters, instead it would be like a hug box and people wouldnt be telling storys that focus on things like inequality, slaves, maybe a hated alien race, etc... HL2 sure would be fun if their was social equality between the combine and humans.
HL2 sure would be fun if their was social equality between the combine and humans.
HL2 isn't a game where you create a virtual persona of yourself, therefore has nothing to do with this argument.
Why should video games have social equality when its nothing but a form or art and entertainment?
Why should they all ignore it? I am sure there is a valid reason yes?
Actually, social equality in video games is more detrimental than good, say every video game company put it as a prority, instead of more unique worlds and characters, instead it would be like a hug box and people wouldnt be telling storys that focus on things like inequality, slaves, maybe a hated alien race, etc...
This wouldn't happen. If you honestly think some games having a gay option will make every single game force gay options on you then you might want to rethink your argument.
HL2 sure would be fun if their was social equality between the combine and humans.
Stupid comparison. Half Life 2 isn't a game about interacting with other people using an avatar you design to represent yourself.
Sniper its ironic as fuck that you brought up HL2 because that game has amazing male and female characters with a ton of racial diversity. And you pretty much confirmed that you have no idea what you're talking about with that combine equality statement
HL2 isn't a game where you create a virtual persona of yourself, therefore has nothing to do with this argument.
I was arguing against milkandcookies saying that Social Equality should be a priority in media, as in all media, not just tomodachi. Thats why I brought up HL2.
Diversity and equality in games should just sort of be there. Making it a special point or patting yourself on the back for it makes it look like you're pandering or just doing it to try to be impressive. Looking at you, Bioware.
