• Nostalgia Critic Editorial: Are Video Games Art?

I think the art in Videogames is less about the gameplay, and more about the reflective thoughts that you receive after finishing one, or recall playing one a longer time ago.
Well, just like with books/movies/music/whatever, different games have different intentions. Games like the recent CoD's and most Nintendo games are like comedy movies and books since they have a fun mood, historical games (like most WWII games) have varying degrees of documentary influence about them, games like Spec Ops the Line and Papers Please can be compared to the humanities like Shakespeare's works, etc... Just because Spongebob exists doesn't mean film isn't an art, and the latest Call Of Battlefighter shouldn't get in the way of games being an art
what is the list of games in the video.?
Just watch it yourself
Personally, I think anything that's recorded for posterity is art - not necessarily good, like the crayon drawing, but an attempt nonetheless. I would go further as to extend that to the consumer as well, once they've produced something from it - just as a person's photograph of another artist's statue is a 'derivative work', I would also extend that same definition to a players' screenshot of a game, for example - whether they then touched it up or not. (There's still a choice in content of the shot, framing, etc - even if the act of creation is merely a keypress)
I don't understand the dumbs in the OP. I agree with everything Doug says here.
Facepunch's on "we hate Doug Walker" mode.
Facepunch's on "we hate Doug Walker" mode.
I don't understand why this is though. This isn't terrible. Meh maybe, but not terrible.
-snip, dumb attempt at a joke-
Fucking move on. He's made better things since. That's like saying Dennis Hopper is a terrible actor for being in the Super Mario Brothers Movie. It was a terrible movie and Dennis Hopper has been in movies that are just as shitty, but that doesn't make him a terrible actor. Forgive and forget, Jesus Christ. I hated Demo Reel as much as everyone else did and I thought that the whole year leading up the NC's "retirement" was very lackluster and I was rarely ever entertained. He's gotten better. He can still make good points when he's not trying too hard. Goddamn.
-insert something about the two or three videos with tmz jabs-
He made Demo Reel.
oh no, truly that means he is the antichrist i demand a sacrifice to appease the internet content gods
I didn't even know there were people still arguing against games as an art form.
Calm down man, I'm just saying some people would probably still have beef with the NC over that. I have no doubt in my mind he's improved. Probably should've said that it was a joke first, I don't really have a problem with him.
-insert something about the two or three videos with tmz jabs-
At least on the last video they had a reason to be there. It was all about representing someone, and he was trying to make a parallel between people's opinion of how Spielberg represented Kubrick's vision and how he was representing TMZ.
First off, it was two videos. Second off, they kind of deserve to be mocked and third, it was just one episode that really seemed "obnoxious" to some people. I thought the skits were OK, they just went on a little too long.
joke your head I was making fun of those who use one bit as "evidence" against him
No hard feelings, dude. I just really, really hate the NC fanbase and its haters. They fans love everything he does and rarely ever criticize him when he DOES do something stupid and the haters just go all-out and criticize every last thing he does.
All good, I was trying to be a comedian and go all 'Hurhur Facepunch hates someone and can't move on'. Awful execution on my part.
I don't understand why this is though. This isn't terrible. Meh maybe, but not terrible.
It's because of that Retsupurae video. http://blip.tv/slowbeef/retsupurae-vs-the-nostalgia-critic-5535142 I'll give Walker credit though, he actually apologized for that video. Unlike some other people who will go unnamed.
probably because the subject has been done to death over the past half a decade and him making a video on this subject now seems just as pandery as his "why is loki so hot" video
You guys really have a weird view on Doug Walker and his need to have you specifically viewing his videos. Every thread about him i see some egocentric knob post something along the lines of "Oh he wants us to watch his vids so hard" or "He's totally out of touch with what i want (usually worded as "the fans") so he's obviously pathetic" Comeon. Please get back down to earth guys. Why are you all so fixated on him being fixated on you? [editline]6th June 2013[/editline]
It's because of that Retsupurae video. Why should he apologise if people think it's shit? If so. How do you want it? "I'm sorry that you think it sucks" or "i'm sorry that i didn't actively conform to your opinion of appropriate or good material"?

I'm not saying he's obligated to apologize, his reasons for doing what he does are not my business.
I think it's funny how the TGWTG community praises Doug endlessly, while Facepunch absolutely hates him. I agree with FilmSlacker here, people are really reaching for shit to complain about. Honestly I find him more entertaining than most of the crap I see on Youtube lately.
