lubu is in the trailer front and center, i doubt he'll be a dlc character (he's the dude with the red plumage next to dong zhou and later in the trailer soloing against the 2 wei guys)
[editline]10th January 2018[/editline]
if anything i can see them dlcing the hell out of the fictional characters in the romance of the three kingdoms lore
Oi, that's actually the Shu trio: Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu. I think the panicking dude in Red, whom we see later is Cao Cao.
It's weird to see Cao Cao in red.
whoops
im forgetting some stuff and mismatching some things between me actually researching stuff and my memories of dw games of decades past
On one hand, the fact that it's not going to be DW-based saddens me. On the other hand, we are likely to get a mod that will rebalance the game into a hero-based madness that we are so used to.
I hope its more akin to Shogun in gameplay since in the warhammer games late-game lords can solo armies.
That's accurate to real life Chinese history tho. Trust me, I'm a retail worker.
How many factions could there be? I don't know much about the period aside from Lu Bu wankery and as far as I know there is only 3 factions.
there is actually a bunch of different factions during the three kingdoms period as almost the local rulers tries to seize control of the government as the emperor is falling. Its only during the final years where all the factions are merged together and ends with the three major factions most people know as these factions' leader officially abandon they loyalty to the emperor and proclaim themselves as the new emperor.
I felt like hero units in Warhammer I and II were fine, they never felt like army killers and usually couldn't take on more than 2 elite infantry squads at once before getting fucked up pretty badly.
I really hope it doesn't suck. IIRC, the last few Total War games have been massive letdowns for a lot of people.
Shogun and Rome, probably due to very lackluster unit variety (and even then Rome 2 fixed that up with addons), probably yes.
Warhammer, though, is very highly praised.

We can likely see factions for the warlords at the end of the Han Dynasty, which preceded the Three Kingdoms era.

Yuan Shao is going to be a thorn in Cao Cao's side if so. Although, it would be too early since Liu Bei has yet to flee to the southwest, seeking refuge under Liu Biao and eventually taking over his province, and Lu Bu is still his own warlord, not yet under Dong Zhuo.
Also Korea, Central Asia, and the Nanman (Southern Barbarians, mostly Viet, Thai, or Burmese) might make an appearance as either rebels or hordes.

Well besides the 3 factions most people are familiar with there are also the forces of Dong Zhuo's forces as seen in the trailer, The Yellow Turbans if the game goes back that far, Yuan Shao's forces, the region of Nanzhong under Meng Huo, and possibly the early Jin Dynasty that splintered off of the Wei Kingdom. I suppose what factions they have to use depends on how many years the game takes place over.
I thought they were never going to do a title with Three in it. :v:
I just want Yuan Shao and Sun Jian
Is this supposed to look like a dynasty warriors game? It doesn’t have the feel of a total war game, I dunno
Its based in the same era as dynasty warriors, the romance of the three kingdoms with the same 3 forces Wei, Wu and Shu. I'm sure they are going to reference the series at some point.
Wu for life though, because Sun Tzu is from Wu and now in a TW game. course I'm choosing that side.

Sun Tzu did die about 700 years before the events of this game though.

A day late but to clarify for people, the only grumbling is from long time Total War fans who only crave historical titles. The Warhammer series is selling incredibly well and has won over a lot of historical fans and captured the pretty big Warhammer audience, securing further funding for more Total War games of both types.
Nothing really to complain about.

Absolutely this! I don't even get the "last few games have sucked" because the only recent one to be just objectively shitty is R2. Attila is great, AOC is great, Warhammer 1 and 2 are pretty solid, even despite concessions made to fit gameplay to table-top armies. (no spearwalls etc). Saga looks promising and 3 kingdoms could be exciting. Just don't preorder and no disappointment will be heartbreaking.

Sun Tzu was dead about 700 years before this period.

And it appears I am about 700 years late with that reply.
Here's hoping we end up with actual historical/mythological clusterfucks like Xiahou Dun getting taken as a hostage and then demanding that rescuing troops ignore him and kill bandits, instead - causing bandits to immediately surrender when they realized that they can't hide behind the hostages.

Or Zhuge Liang scaring off Sima Yi and his attacking force by having everyone in the city hide, leaving the gates wide open and inviting him in for tea.

I don't know if great is the term I'd use, they still suffer quite a lot from the engine vs. older games.
It's just that the do manage to compensate decently in other areas which makes them worth playing.
