At least it's possible to back out of those. It took me a really long time to get that "doubt" is not really "doubt", that it sends Phelps flipping out, flaunting wild accusations at witnesses and saying stupidest shit imaginable.
originally truth doubt and lie were actually supposed to be something else. Doubt was originally called "threat."
its probably just me but LA Noire for some reason just doesn't feel like the time it takes place in, I cant quite put my finger on it but it just dosen't
it's crazy just how quickly this games main selling point and "new technology" had become outdated and just creepy looking.
Phelps sure sneezes on others a lot! Is the body animation separate or something? Because he doesn't even block it, he just sneezes right in their faces :v:

They did a lot of studying of the time period and 40's Hollywood too. To be fair, though, America maintained that look from like 1942 until almost 1960 with only a few changes, like TV.
Phelps sure sneezes on others a lot! Is the body animation separate or something? Body animation was done separate, which is why everything below the neck looks stiff and janky by comparison.
Yeah they had to sit in a chair while capturing facial animations.
Yeah, the problem is that the body animation wasn't captured like the face anim was, IIRC. That made it feel REALLY wrong. Also, the fundamental flaw with L.A. Noir is that it doesn't matter how good your tech is if some of the people you're capturing aren't good at acting.
This is relatively uncharted acting territory, so can you really blame them? It'll take time for mocap face-voice actors to actually develop a proper method
LA Noire is a game I have to play but I'll likely just do it with a guide to cheat through it I bought it for 60$ and barely played it. I wanted to like it, it's an amazing game with amazing style and amazing facial animations but it just isn't my thing. I never liked those games.
A lot of it seemed to drag on for me, but the [sp]arson cases and parts where you play as Kelso picked up a ton and actually had me very into the game.[/sp] Unfortunately that was all pretty close to the end though.

it was pretty great for back then but once they screwed up in the bloopers and started talking naturally instead of those cooked up lines it felt a lot more real and way better for example smiling and laughter, something that never happened in the actual game just because it has noire in the title doesn't mean you just prohibit characters from expressing half the emotional spectrum
The first time I played LA Noire I got really into it and set it to black and white and I was having fun wrapping the environment around me while I was playing it, but my stepbrother kept trying to tell me where all of the clues were and what to pick during interrogations and it completely destroyed my ability to play the game ever again. I told him many times to stop and was clearly annoyed but he kept doing it and didn't understand why I was getting annoyed. I was like "this is a game intended to make you think what's the point if you know all the answers" and he still didn't seem to get it. Doesn't surprise me though, this is the type of person who will look up LPs of a game and then say he played it. One day he watched me play Riven for a little bit and he thought it was cool but admitted he would never be able to play it because he took one quick glance at all of the papers I had scattered over my desk with chicken scratch and poor drawings of symbols and immediately said "nope".

All the characters in the game were played by trained and experienced actors. The problem isn't them, it's the fact that sitting in a chair and not being able to move around severely hampers one's ability to act, no matter how good an actor you are.

this one's the best
my favorite part of LA Noire is calling the girl who just found out her mother died a brat because i picked Doubt

I remember being like 8 and playing through the myst games and riven with my grandfather, we had the same kinda shit going on where we had symbols scratched all over papers and sticky notes, it's a real adventure dude.
The tech behind this game was really great, but boy did they use it terribly. The entire interrogation system was kind of ass, especially due to that shitty Mass Effect ass Truth, Doubt or Lie system that didn't really let you know what any of your options would actually make you do at any time.
My only problem with LA Noire is that you can tell it's missing a lot of the story. The main plot of the game goes through Patrol > Traffic > Vice > Arson, so the entirety of the homicide desk feels pointless by the end since it never goes anywhere. The game doesn't really hit its stride until Vice anyway.
i wonder if there are any studies that go deeper into that, like, how much does not being able to express yourself with the rest of your body affects your facial expressions and stuff
Yeah it's called study acting for 10 years and then do a student film with a shitty director who wants to control your every movement instead of let you act. Or act for George Lucas.

found this in the related videos, they did use motion capture along side the face thing
Yeah but you can see they were done separately, hence the body movements not really matching up with the head in most cases.

I loved the game. Only played it in Black and White. Might do a second playthough in color.
