Miyazaki is great I think some Anime movies simply separate the genre, for example Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Cowboy Bepop, there is probably more of which I don't know but these are just simply different than anything run off the mill crap that people hate including myself.
To be fair, for every good Western cartoon like Dexter's Lab, you have half a dozen shit failures like Johny Test. I guess the issue is that with Anime, the shit shows somehow manage to stay popular for much longer than with western animated shows.

Imagine if somebody only knew ten movies and made their judgement on the entire film industry based on that.
miyazaki is hardly underground tho, if anything i feel the more underground the anime is the more strange and cliche they tend to be. but there is popular terrible anime too *cough* attack on titan *cough*
Is there any good anime that isn't about awkward dudes and superwomen whose immortal powers are contained in their tits, without the way too squeaky voices and as the dude in the video says: Characters with no relateable emotional register? (As in not giving a fuck about/enjoying all the weird shit)
Castle of Cagliostro (and the rest of the Lupin series) and Akira are amazing. Like, even mainstream Hollywood filmmakers love them.
but there is popular terrible anime too *cough* attack on titan *cough*
I don't know what it is about AoT, I mean it suffers from so many of the cliches that put me off anime a while ago (flashback after flashback, character stereotypes we've seen a million times over, episodes just dragging on and on with nothing much actually happening) but for whatever reason I kept watching to see where it was going. And in the end it went barely fucking anywhere, yet I'll probably still watch it when the next season comes out. I don't get why though.
Castle of Cagliostro (and the rest of the Lupin series) and Akira are amazing.
Miyazaki films kick ass. They also have the best soundtracks thanks to Joe Hisaishi. Spirited Away was pretty good but Porco Rosso is still my favourite of all his films mainly because of the soundtrack that came with it. I mean just listen to this:
Yesss. The aeroplane designs are amazing as well.
I highly recommend to watch/listen to the entire thing with some good headphones because this is just magnificent.
Didn't like Howl's Moving Castle? Really? Howl's is my second favorite Miyzaki film after Princess Mononoke and followed by Poko Rosso. Spirited Away was an amazing film and I can appreciate how it did everything right but it just wasn't my type of film. It seems every Miyzaki I like has teen or adult characters rather than kids.

And the complaint about nothing really happening in the end is a supremely minor one because the story is nowhere near done.
I haven't watched anything anime since I was like 12 watching Naruto, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon and all that shit. My parents thought it was the anime that made me fucked up and weird and started scolding me whenever they caught me watching it, and I believed it and was pretty much terrified of anything anime ever since. Then I got into this whole "I hate anime its for socially awkward aspies that roleplay way too much" kind of mentality and pretty much ignored it ever since. Now I kind of want to watch that "Spirited Away" thing, seems like there might be some good anime out there after all. Is there any good anime that isn't about awkward dudes and superwomen whose immortal powers are contained in their tits, without the way too squeaky voices and as the dude in the video says: Characters with no relateable emotional register? (As in not giving a fuck about/enjoying all the weird shit)
I mostly stick to watching shorts, ovas, and films now. I have difficulty clinging to shows.
I'm surprised nobody has said anything about Ponyo. I fucking love Ponyo.

All of them have really good English dubs if you don't want to watch with English subtitles. Oh Hellsing is pretty good and Full Metal Alchemist is really good.
The point of AoT is to turn those cliches on their ass. And the complaint about nothing really happening in the end is a supremely minor one because the story is nowhere near done.
I don't remember AoT turning any cliche on its ass.
idk why you guys are talking about Grave of the Fireflies so much in reference to Miyazaki. He didn't direct it or even write it. It's just that Studio Ghibli animated it.
I feel like most people who dislike My Neighbor Totoro probably saw the horrible cartoon network dub.
And the complaint about nothing really happening in the end is a supremely minor one because the story is nowhere near done.
I know the story is nowhere near done, but I think a 20 episode season where barely any progress is made is a pretty big problem. And how are those cliches turned on their ass exactly? You've got the brash and reckless hero (Erin), the strong silent one with a traumatic past (Mikasa), the physically weak but intelligent and strategic one (Armin), the stoic super badass (Levi), the "I'm mad at myself because I'll never be as good as Mr Hero" rival (Jean)... the list goes on.

(As in not giving a fuck about/enjoying all the weird shit)
The Animatrix. This is a collection of short films. The characters aren't really central to the stories so they don't come across as terrible and annoying. It's more focused on the narrative and cool visuals. Barefoot Gen. This is a feature length film about a kid living in Hiroshima when the Ark of the Covenant was opened facing the city. The characters aren't annoying because much of the movie is stuff blowing up. Metropolis. Another feature length film. A detective and his nephew investigate a crime in the titular city. Tensions reach a boiling point between the huddled masses, the people in charge, and the robots living in the city. Much of the movie is stuff blowing up and really cool paintings of urban landscapes, but the tone is much lighter than Barefoot Gen.
The Wind Rises is my favorite Miyazaki film. It felt like it gave the perspective of a creative mind near perfectly.
I thought it was pretty good but the whole 'oh we have been throwing paper planes at each other for a week and haven't talked shit all during that time we are now in love let's get married' was super lame and made me zero interested in their relationship

It's like Japanophilia, but with western culture as the main subject. It's strange, sometimes nonsensical, you can really feel the creators trying to go for the Myazakiness as a set goal, and has Steve Blum. It's worth watching, not to expect something that's top of the glass, but it certainly is a solid film, and certainly once again pressures the point that there are very few animated western films nowdays, that are as imaginative as some anime films.

I disagree about Castle in the Sky. I thought Porco Rosso had one of the weaker storylines.
I watch dubs
disgusting
The ultimate mental whiplash is watching Kill la Kill and Mushi-Shi back to back. Its amazing.
I disagree about Castle in the Sky. I think the reason it isn't as well known or praised as the rest of his works is because of how extremely figurative it is. I mean the main character is literally a fucking pig.
