This analogy falls so flat it's not even funny.

Alright mate.

We don't know what kind of game Half Life 3 will be, but Half Life 4 will be caveman simulator with only two kinds of weapons: sticks and stones.
Answer's simple; turn Half Life 3 into a VR game. To avoid motion sickness, put Gordon in a Wheelchair that's pushed around by Alex. Problem solved.

You mean Zeno Clash is actually a sequel to Half-Life?
I feel that Gabe is probably embarrassed by the lack of any progress on Half Life 3, and has it's far too late for him to say anything reassuring or anything to bring closure. If he goes in either direction publicly it'll bring serious heat. I really feel Gabe has lost control of Valve and doesn't feel like the right person to reign it in.
Hell, I'd be scared shitless every time I went to a con if I were him
I've read some interesting info on reddit a few days ago. Can't find a link so I'll just retell it from memory, also I'm not sure if this is true or not but it sounds like something you can expect from valve these days:
Basically whole company right now is under control of a select "cool and powerful" persons who prefer to do as minimum work as possible (while still keeping their paycheck of course). So when someone tries to start a new project those guys just force people to not work on it.
Ughhhh that's just so fucking shitty. A once-cool company falling flat on its ass because a few dudes ruined it for everyone. It's like high school never fucking ended with chumps like that doing this bullshit.
Pisses me off so much. It may not be true but god damn it really feels like it is.
Grow some sense Gabe and fire those guys. Set an example.
Valve should make a new single player IP if they aren't making HL3 or EP3.
And have them abandon that too, i'm sure that'll go over well!
A basic plot exalted by an exciting, good-for-its-time physics engine.
And yet I long for it still
It is a bit of a paradox that Valve fell to exactly the same shit as all of the tightly managed conventional companies, so much for being the supposed antithesis.
I had a feeling this would be inevitable but actually seeing it happen depresses me :disappoint:

People like me have been posting about it on the Reddit post (and here) about the Episode 3 story.
It basically comes from ex-devs that reviewed Valve on Glassdoor and talked about "highschool"-working conditions where guys with some power abuse it to bully newcomers who want to kickstart new stuff and give them redundant and boring tasks to make them feel discouraged.
Here's the worst thing out of all that I read there: They even say that when some new guys see problems within the company or a huge flaw, the upper guys don't want them to fix them. When the newcomers attempt to fix them, they get shutdown by those people because they don't want to work on improving those flaws because it's boring and would require work to solve them.
They also complain that Gabe barely looks into the offices to check on his co-workers.
Gabe needs to get rid of these people. They are probably even the reason why Chet, Erik and the others left.
Gabe needs to post the fucking story-board at least.. Let us know the fate of Gordon and his brother G-Man AT LEAST.

Have you not seen what Marc Laidlaw has posted?

Someone is out of the loop
Welp.
I don't know what I expected reading "epistle 3", but it didn't solve anything and still puts a fat question mark at the end of the series.
May it die with dignity.. A ghost on a forgotten battlefield.

Spent some time reading Glassdoor.... well that was depressing. Especially some guy saying Gabe is doing nothing but play dota every day and the guy who was fired with 1 day notice via email from some dickhead. I can't imagine how this company is still operational.
I am sort of curious of what happened between 2007 and 2008. Interviews in 2007 Gabe was ready talk the interviewers ears off about episode 3. But in 2008 he refused to answer or say anything about it. Makes me wonder if there was an accident or something that hampered development, maybe it actually got deleted for the most part and they decided to abandon the project since it had taken so much effort.
I suppose it's true what they say "Even the greatest don't last forever"

One practically acquires the impression that the entire corporation is being held ransom to enforce the agenda of no one making good videogames.
After Episode 2 the entire Valve team got kidnapped and mind bugged by a race of hidden reptilians because they held too much of a capacity to improve society through their art.
Same exact shit happened to Kojima. The Pachinko machines were just coverup to prevent him from making a new genuinely good Silent Hill game.
Tinfoil hat stuff aside though, it really is fucking weird that Valve is not doing FUCKING anything that can be considered brand new, with such a gargantuan amount of money it could be assumed that atleast like 4 guys would have time to put together like a mod or art project for something, yet we are seeing this disturbing uniform silence across the board, it's bewildering and nonsensical.

Most of the reviews on Glassdoor for Valve are obviously fake.

If they are fake then the person (people) who wrote them did a very good research because they are pretty damn convincing and real-looking.

Most of them aren't researched at all. They mention management (which there isn't, only a skeleton crew of HR to handle the actual hiring-firing paperwork), stock options (Valve is privately owned), and other obvious mistakes that make the AstroTurf apparent.

The ones I've read describe that as "yes, there is no classical management but there are people who have far more power than most of the people". I can't see why that is so unbelievable when even by being outside observer you can see that valve is going downhill since 2013.
Now at a place like my previous company, pretty much everyone is constantly trying to climb the stack rank ladders to get a good bonus, and everyone is trying to protect their perceived turf. Some particularly nasty devs will do everything they can to lead you down blind alleys, or just give you bad information or bogus feedback, to prevent you from doing something that could make you look good (or make something they claimed previously be perceived by the group as wrong or boneheaded).

IMO Valve is successful *in spite* of the open office cultural nuttiness. I noticed the more tightly the devs got packed in, the lower our collective average IQ (and just plain common sense) dropped. If it wasn't for Gabe Newell (the CEO) making key adjustments/decisions the whole thing would have imploded a very long time ago.

Desks on wheels, maaan. Here at Valve you can wheel yourself to closed space, maaan...
Except if you *actually* use them to wheel yourself around to a different cabal room or whatever a bunch of people will get pissed at you. The wheels thing was more BS marketing.
I'm ready for one of you clowns to claim a master vampire lives in the ValveHQ and start a pitchfork mob.

It must feel like a fucking miracle to get anything done while working like this.

Valve has regular peer reviews, that combined with the skeleton HR (and Gabe) is all there is. It's one of the major reasons you get cabals the way Valve does. The reason you get "big fish" is because of perceived clout and experience (E.G if Gabe says something should be done, it's usually turned out to be correct). Not because of a rigid C&C structure.
Not everyone will work out at Valve (clearly), they even say this to their new-hires (most people aren't fit for Valve). That doesn't mean all the negitive reviews on Glassdoor are real.
To understand the fundemental midset of Valve you need to read peopleware, then read their employee handbook.

And yet such a working environment produced both some of the most acclaimed works of videogame art, and the most financially successful ones.

Probably thinking of this.

There's even more on that page. Seems pretty mixed on opinions but the negative ones sure sound the same.

Sounds like someone has a hateboner for valve. Then again they've probably pissed off a lot of fans in the past 10 years. :v:
