why not call warrant officer Alwin Labans and ask him if it's real yourself, if you're saying that The Herald falsified a statement from an actual living officer http://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=4747
Damn bro, abalones are serious shit aren't they?
So if you watch the video as well he answers a lot of your questions. 1. He said the gun was under his pillow and that's why he was holding it when he woke up. 2. He has an alarm system (and a fence) but apparently something was wrong with the alarm system so it didn't go off. One of the zones was faulty. So, there was the two concerns answered. Why he had a gun in his bed and was holding it. I think he said something like he stirred in the night, heard a noise but didn't think it was a dangerous so he fell back to sleep he probably grabbed the gun at that point and he has an alarm system so that's not even a factor into this anymore.

Still possible for it to be faked (newspaper could have been fooled, among other possibilities) but it seems much less likely now.
Damn bro, abalones are serious shit aren't they?
yes also i found more sources http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Woman-fires-shots-at-home-intruders-20150512 http://www.msn.com/en-za/news/featured/video-pe-woman-shoots-at-intruders/ar-BBjHhgV http://www.georgeherald.com/news/News/National/136373/PE-woman-shoots-at-intruders http://zululandobserver.co.za/video_of_the_day/girlfriend-shoots-at-armed-intruders/
Well, that's pretty substantial evidence. [editline]14th March 2016[/editline] I really recommend watching the entire response. The whole situation is pretty crazy especially the state of South Africa.
What doubts do you still have?
It's still weird that the gun was already in his hands. I've rewatched that section several times - there's no motion for him to grab it, it's just already there. And it's weird that he "woke up" in motion, not wake up, realize there's shooting going on, and then pull out the gun and get into action. I wouldn't expect most trained soldiers to be capable of that. That said, right now I'd say my estimate is 75% probability that the story is mostly accurate, 15% real but significant facts were left out, 10% faked. There's still doubts but the evidence seems to favor it being more-or-less real.

He said he sleeps with it under his pillow so it's always very close or more often than not he sleeps with his hand on it. He was stirred at some point in the night and probably put his hand on it. The video is in the reaction video. And as far as the incoming wave of people saying that's unsafe, as someone who has plenty of firearms; that revolver isn't a huge danger if he's sleeping with it like that. To pull that trigger takes several pounds of force on the trigger in double-action mode. It's the reason I own a double-action semi-automatic pistol for my conceal carry. Unless you actually pull the trigger, like, mentally and physically purposely pull that trigger it won't fire. Ever. And considering he lives in crime ridden South Africa I don't think sleeping with his gun is a bad idea, and look at that, he needed it that night. [editline]14th March 2016[/editline] South Africa is bad. Like, it's really hard to comprehend if you haven't seen it in depth but South Africa is a horrible shit hole. Like, Robocop's Detriot. Here are just some of the things that he has experienced.
I have been robbed at knife-point, have had my business burgled, my mom has been stabbed when someone went for her purse. My sister has been burgled. My brother-in-law had three thousand bucks extorted from him by a cop - "either you give me 3 grand or you spend the weekend in jail for reckless driving". My sister-in-law has been hi-jacked in broad daylight. My girlfriend's mom had a bag put over her head and strangled in her home - till she passed out (presumed dead) - and the perpetrators then went to raid her refrigerator and she heard them casually chatting as they ate in her kitchen. A few months prior to this, my girlfriend's mom's 70-something best friend was tied to a bed with wire, raped and then had her head bashed in till dead with a lamp-post. We have arrested at least 5 attempted "petty" theft individuals at my folks house before they eventually were forced to move out. I live behind steel gates - prison level of security. I have an alarm system with armed response, easily accessible panic buttons - this is the "norm" for South Africans, CCTV outside and in almost every room and "religiously" check the doors and alarm each night. I have had three burglars in my yard in the last ten years - fortunately they were all arrested. Just yesterday, someone attempted to get into my house, but fortunately the alarm went off and scared them away.
I think it's important to understand just how bad crime is in South Africa. The documentary "Tell Me and I Will Forget" is about an ambulance crew in South Africa and it sheds a lot of light on the conditions in South Africa and it will help people who aren't aware of the situation get a glimpse of what it's like. http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/tell_me_and_i_will_forget You can watch it here.
The dude is white and live in South Africa. Not surprised at all they are armed and sleep like that.

His hand was around that area anyway which is weird, but given the fact that he's clearly ready for someone to break into his shit maybe he has been prepared for this kind of thing for a while. only thing i can imagine is that he heard a gunshot, and given his location he immediately knew 'oh shit i gotta get the gun' being fair we didn't see him -wake up- and get moving, he very well could have had his eyes open before he bolts out of bed. maybe he woke up, laid there for a few seconds to verify the threat, and then when he knew shit was real he got up?
If I lived in South Africa I'd sleep with a gun in my hand too
I had a friend from South Africa who had his TV stolen. They came back to steal the remote.
Why did he wake up with a loaded gun in his hand?
Because its South Africa [editline]16th March 2016[/editline]
Smells fake to me. Guy wakes up with the gun already in his hands at 2:40 - even if he was awake, there was no motion to grab it from under the pillows. Either they're in such a shitty neighborhood that waking up to a firefight is a regular thing (as in weekly), or this was staged.
Its completely normal in South Africa, crime is catastrophically high.
Nobody in South Africa knows how to safely handle a gun?
TBH it could make a difference between life and death
