Have you really never heard of squibs? They've been in use in movies since the 50s.
No, because most behind the scenes stuff for movies don't usually cover the special effects to that much of a degree. It's usually just basic stuff with the practical effects like how they pulled off a particular scene involving a lot of crazy stuff, or commentary on CG.

Okay? You don't have to look at behind the scenes stuff to know about squibs. It's kinda just common knowledge.

Oh

Don't assume your knowledge is common knowledge.
The fact that many of us don't know about it kind of proves the opposite.

Holy shit, everyone in this thread should watch this video.
I've never seen someone breakdown the difference between American and Hong Kong fight choreography so clearly before. I'm bookmarking this, thanks for showing me!

I guess the "shots" on people are done by explosives inserted into clothing as well?

I'm assuming so, yes. Smaller directional ones.

That guy's whole channel is filled with great videos, one of my favorites.

Yes, they're squibs with blood packs in them.
But bullet holes in walls are caused by compressed air in the wall blowing chunks of paper out of a thin drywall-like substance painted to look like concrete, tile, etc...
I want fake concrete pillars in my house
I want fake concrete pillars in my house
so that if there's ever a shootout in your home, at least it'll look fucking sweet?

If someone broke in, just casually smash a pillar or two as you walk menacingly towards them.
You'll love HK cinema by tenfold then, give John Wio's "Hard Boiled" or "The Killer" a watch.
Isn't one inspired in the other or something anyway?
I should rewatch The Matrix and watch those though.

The robbers would be at least a little bit surprised after seeing a guy wearing shades in the dark casually breaking a pillar and making an emotionless face.
Does anyone know what the destructible environment is composed of or how it's made? I wanna say Styrofoam but the way the actors just easily punch through it and it crumbles like dust makes me think it's something else. It would be awesome to set up environments like this for an air-soft shootout.

Wow you mean you don't know? That's common knowledge!

I will say this, Squibs are kind of famous, so theres a reason to know them.
Im curious too, however.
All those noises Keanu makes cement my belief in that "ewan mcgregor constantly made the lightsaber noises while shooting" rumor that's been going around forever.

Isn't there footage of someone telling Ewan he doesn't have to make the sound effects on set somewhere? Or was he told off for it? I feel like I've seen that somewhere
Some of those blanks going off near people are pretty crazy.
I do a lot of reenacting and it's quite scary to have a blank gun go off near you in your direction since if you're close enough, you actually can feel powder hit your face - props to those actors though, that's pretty badass

So do you always ask how they do greenscreen effects when you see them then?

There's this video from the Graham Norton show. He does mention that when he first started, he found it hard to not make the lightsabre sound effects.

Love to see the actors having so much fun doing this, especially Keanu.
I miss the squibs. Nowadays even movies that go for violence often use CG blood splatter and it just isn't the same thing. I understand CG allows for more takes without changing costumes and setting up new squibs but you lose the realness.

Yeah, it talks a lot about the art of film making and each video about a topic is always interesting.
Heh, it's like a water slide. But jesus christ, that thing was actually in his throat.

Don't want to derail this thread too much but in terms of realness, this video is great too:
So do you always ask how they do greenscreen effects when you see them then?
What? :v:
What does greenscreen have to do with this?
Clarify your question a bit.
