How the hell did they get the security guards in the lobby to get pumped full of bullet holes? When I see stuff like that in movies I always try to figure out how they do it.
Probably little explosives with fake blood. Blackhawk Down used them and there's a couple shots where you can see the square outline of them before they go off
What? :v:
What does greenscreen have to do with this?
Clarify your question a bit.
don't be so dense
these are THE most basic tools for special effects
squibs have been used in cinema to simulate gunshot wounds since the 60s and is ubiquitous
greenscreen has been used to aid composite effects (not even pure cgi, also used for optical compositing, though blue was used then) since the 70s and is ubiquitous
and do some research - if you really didn't know what a squib is go look it up, it takes less than a minute
In fact if you don't already know this or have any damn initiative to look up something unfamiliar for yourself then clearly you don't have an interest in how films are made so what are you even doing in this thread
So do you always ask how they do greenscreen effects when you see them then?
Alright, first off, 'do you always ask' makes so sense what-so-ever. Because you assume he has asked what a squib is before, yet you have no way of knowing that. Plus that would mean he'd already know what it means so why would he ask again?
Second, why do you assume it's common sense that people should know the operations of a thing that is exclusively used in film making and military applications? 'common knowledge' implies that the thing should be known in an ordinary persons life, not exclusively to a set occupation.
You're being totally unreasonable.

Because maybe he likes the film and feels like passing time? Do we need a degree in film making to want to know more about certain films?

Maybe "common knowledge" wasn't the right term, I meant more that if you're at all interested in anything on how movies are made, one of the most basic things you would know about are squibs. And since the guy said that he always wonders how movies are made when he watches them, that would be like on the first things you'd find out about.

Wtf is with your crazy hostility based on your assumptions. Are you PUI?
Your arguments are all nonsense. I know what a squib is, I know what a greenscreen is.
I do VFX and CGI shit myself, it's like my main hobby.
Excuse me for pointing out that specific industry-related knowledge is not common knowledge.
Boasting your knowledge and acting as if everyone else is stupid and lesser than you for not knowing is childish.

I mean always wonder in the sense that when I see it, I go "hey that's neat, I wonder how they did that" and then I forget about it. I've never heard of squibs until it was mentioned after I asked the question. I always kinda figured it was a tiny micro-explosive with a blood capsule, but wasn't sure. Most of the knowledge I have about visual and practical effects only comes from watching behind-the-scenes stuff for movies. So the more advanced stuff with CG and whatnot I'm familiar with.
Have you really never heard of squibs? They've been in use in movies since the 50s.
I've never heard of 'squibs' either exactly, but it hasn't been a mystery to me how could film creators possibly fake bullet impacts. :v:
The ones used in Matrix lobby scene particularly stood out though, I remember being woah'd as a kid as well. Works nice with white collar shirt the security was wearing.
Man, all of these are awesome videos!

I know a lot about green screening and have done a bit myself, but I've never heard of squibs.
Quit being a goddamn prick and just answer the question with some basic levels of respect. There are a lot of things I can tell you are common sense (like, proper grammar) which you are not aware of.
I know it had its own thread here but anyone interested in this stuff should check out the making of John Wick.

Squibs are incredibly common amongst people who do practical effects, I think it's totally reasonable for a person in CGI to not know because frankly, the practical effects guys don't know the CGI terms either in general.
Speaking of special effects, I swear there was a behind the scenes clip of that scene from Fellowship of the Ring when Bilbo's face gets all scary, but I can't find it. Only being this up because I'm watching the movie right now.
