OK, this settles it. I will have my first Deus Ex playthrough. I only ever hear good stuff about it and I haven't even really spoiled myself the story yet.
should call this deux ex: regression cause it looks worse than the original
Hopefully there'll be a version for people without the game on Steam. (Like me)
It's literally on sale for $1.39.

I just bought it. This is gonna be fun.
Might go up here.

and it requires Steam registration....and then you have to buy Deus Ex 1 from Steam. Is this the beginning of the DRM for mods?

M8 you are late as fuck to the party if you think this is the first mod to get released on steam
And with the ability to quickly patch everyone playing your mod why wouldn't you want steam anyways lol
is there any reason not to use the mod on a first playthrough? i just bought it and idk if i should play vanilla first (sans using mods that improve on the engine or textures and shit)
So guys I never played this game as a youngster. Is it a good oppurtunity to pick it up now? I heard a lot of good shit about it and all the references and quotes from the protagonist intrigue me
I played this game for the first time just a few years ago, I had a surprisingly easy time getting into it after getting the "fixer" mod that made the game work better on newer hardware.
But how do you improve on perfection?
By improving shitty gunplay and adding more than 5 different sounds enemies make when hurt or killed?

Some people own a retail or even a GOG version. Heck, according to the mod's modDB page, the production of this mod was finished and the news was putted in 24th June 2015, followed by the news update in 9th July.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-revision/news/releasing-soon1
That pretty much putted the hype on the high level.
When GOG's latest weekend sale hitted with all Square Enix at huge discounts, it was normal for people to get DX1 for the sake of this mod. The sale ended, the mod got finally released and as it turned out, it works only, and only for steam version.
That's a huge let down if you ask me. Now people have to rebuy it to play it.
In top of that there's this tweet:

Don't even want to start a drama, but this is just a huge let down.
Yeah, this is some horseshit alright, and I've no doubt it was down to Squenix' involvement, "Fuck you for already owning the game, give us more money!".
The current price of the game is completely irrelevant, the principle is pretty scummy. But then this is the same publisher who had that wonderful pre-order """"bonus"""" scheme.
im pretty sure you can drop the mod files into any copy of deus ex, since it just overlaps the deus ex files.

Doesn't seem to be a way to download it through steam without owning the game.
The mod is probably great.
However I'm very certain that the Steam exclusive release wasn't their idea.
Squeenix does it again.
Man I haven't played Deus Ex ever since the birthday of a very dear friend of mine from the past.
The date marked on Steam has sort of become an engraving of that night...
...but I want to play. Curse you past memories!
Doesn't seem to be a way to download it through steam without owning the game.
apparently there's a moddb link, and also when you download it via steam it automatically drops into the deus ex folder. I had it separated when i installed it to a different hard drive than the one my deus ex was installed on.
The Steam version is on sale right now, as a part of the stealth sale, for $1.39. I don't know about you, but I'd say that's a steal regardless of when and where you purchased it before. The game is fucking amazing even without the mod, and I only played it for the first time five years ago. Sure, the timing could have been better in regards to the GOG sale, but I really doubt it was some masterminded conspiracy to make everyone buy it twice.

How would this work, exactly? How would Squeenix get involved? Nothing stopped TNM guys from releasing their mod outside Steam. It's not like they can go up to modders and force them to not mod, there's no legal precedent for that as far as I know. None of what you said makes sense, it's conspiracy theory nonsense.

Mastermind conspiracy from Human Revolution/Mankind Divided obviously

Did you miss the part on the moddb page that says this?
We're holding some confidential talks with Square Enix to make sure everything is okay, and to make something cool happen, something that we aren't talking about yet, because it's not finalized yet. We've been having a series of back-and-forths to make sure that everybody on our team is happy. There are no real problems, just technicalities that have needed to be ironed out. At this point (July 9), we're expecting these things to be wrapped up shortly.
GOG users found a way to get it to work outside Steam.
Ha-haaa...IT WORKS..IT F***ING WORKS (music as well)...SCREW STEAM :D :D
Folks and I mean CD/GOG version owners..use the standalone installer and ignore steam at the end.
Then download Kentie's launcher, extract it into your Deus Ex/System.
Make a copy of the Deusex.exe and rename it to Revision.exe
Now run the Revision.exe..configure it how you see fit...and finally in Data Directories make sure to check everything..you can uncheck BioMod and/or Shifter if you don't want to play with them.
..and that's it. have fun. :D
EDIT: and speaking of GOG.
