Is anybody knowledgeable about this kind of stuff and could come up with a cheap and moderately easy build with a similar quality range/movement? Maybe a few documents that point out how doing DIY stuff like this even works?
Is it possible to do something like this with, say, a $300 dollar price point and a few hours well spent with a soldering iron and your favorite IDE open?

If you look at the set up this guy uses, it's very simple. It's just a Traxxas Summit with a few parts slapped on.

That's the best place to look for info on how to set up something to FPV it. Although the thread is for a plane, they are very similar to rc trucks.
