"Sophia", a humanoid robot with realistic facial expressions

Conspiracy nuts are out in force. I'm only 50% certain that he's joking

I thought the same thing. Explains why I really want to scissor kick it in the face.

"The most sophisticated artificially intelligent android robot"
I didn't know IBM Watson was a lady

Reminds me of Jedi Knight/Academy face animations.
Designing robots to look human as possible is stupid as fuck.
They're better if they're designed around functional ergonomics. Baymax is more relatable than this.
It's surprising that anyone even tries to do it, and to push it into healthcare and stuff. Like, what the fuck, have they been living under some rock in the desert when the rest of us found out that uncanny valley effect exists? Google's selling Boston Dynamics out because of some kind of bad reputation its getting, people are creeped out by those things, and they don't look human at all. No one's ever going to buy this Sophia robot lady or its successors.
I really hate when they script these sorts of things to look like they are anything more than a puppet with lines of pre-written dialogue.
The control over some of the facial features looks good in the sense that it's quick but it looks too jerky/static. Like all the motors are running at max speed to get to the correct position at all times.

The uncanny valley isn't a bottomless chasm that can't be crossed
Let me tell you about a neat piece of technology called the automobile, and how people contemporary to it's invention found it so clumsy to use they were sure it would never replace horse carriages

i would NOT be okay with talking to a robot psychiatrist

It's pretty wide. When it comes to robotics, it'll not going to be crossed any time soon, not until the AI can catch up - no one is going to like to talk to something visually indistinguishable from human that is lacking severely in... mental ability. Most of us have trouble communicating with mentally challenged/disabled for fuck's sake, without meaning any harm or offence.
Mechanical structures like cars and common robotics (think partially automated assembly lines) are irrelevant, it's not bearing on your psyche. People weren't accepting of those for other reasons, like you mentioned, they were considered clumsy and impractical, not "creepy", "unnerving" and "where's my baseball bat".
Like, I'm not against progress or even the idea itself, I'm just amazed that someone might try and make some money with this shit. That's not going to be possible for quite some time. Especially if it turns out (and it most likely will) if simpler "talking box with a screen" design works better than "human-like" monstrosities.
My point was your argument is that they should stop trying because it sounds too difficult to do, do I have to point out why this is absolutely the wrong attitude to have regarding scientific research?

I shall use this video as evidence that my faceposing in Source Filmmaker actually is realistic!!
Wait... Shit...
Nah, but seriously, this is actually extremely reminiscent of how I pose faces in SFM. The only difference is that I openly acknowledge the fact they are exaggerated and are intended to be an extreme representation of emotion - this video is claiming to be "realistic" in its expressions, which is (obviously) arguable. I actually explicitly cite Dreamworks and the Dreamworks face as a source of reference for my face-posing. :v:

Exactly, if that's done for scientific purposes - that's fine, but the guy in the video outright states that they're looking at providing these to medical facilities and the like in the near future. Attitudes like that will put you out of business before you even make any progress in the field of science.
Making robots look like humans takes away half of the reason I would enjoy interacting with one in the first place.
They are the one thing I wish people would just stop trying to make.
You know what I'd like from all these "ohhhh super realistic robots"? Less forced facial expressions, and more emotions.
Code it to be bored and it'll occupy itself with a random task like identifying nearby objects.
Make it shy or so by quickly shifting it's gaze away if it detects eye contact with a stranger.
Y'kno, those things that makes us human and not just what makes us appear human.
I wonder what it looks like with its skin removed
She should apply for a mocap job at David Cage's development company.
Honestly, that wasn't THAT bad. I mean, was it realistic? NO. But it's probably the best I've ever seen. It's a good attempt, a few more years and they may have something fairly convincing.
Well she didn't need much convincing, agreed to destroy all humans quicker than you can say "uncanny valley".

I think there's just no AI in it yet, and this is mostly to show off that they have pretty advanced mechanical muscles inside, enough to make expressions that people could sort of make, but that have no thinking behind them.
Seems to me like they just keep working on this technology and trying to find a reason to as they go along
